Chocobo Digging Observations
By Chimerawizard 2025-01-06 17:05:08
I hit the cap before retirement and Race Chocotrain:XYZ would lower stats as they raised them.
This was me learning that while raising I could have 640, apparently I could get in 1 extra after retirement.
Maybe it's because the Race tokens give more stat+? I don't know. I'll find out after I dedicate another month to raising birds. lol

Is there a way to lower your chocobo's stats? Assuming you're past day 64.
By Chimerawizard 2025-01-25 14:08:56
//lua l chococard
//cc padock
probably the fastest way of finding out. just test before/after various interations, between days, and feeds to see if anything works.

Yeah I can see my stats, I'm just wondering how you can lower a stat that's too high. In my case, I think my endurance is higher than I want it to be.

i think race chocobo training token: STR would take from your not-STR strongest stat to boost itself.
at least on my retired bird it has taken from the highest stat so far. may be random though. idk

Is there a limit to the number of training tokens you can use?

I may be remembering wrong but I think you can only use one per day and your chocobo needs to be less than . . . ,129 days old? Something like that

No limits for token usage. Except for race tokens are only usable for chocobos currently in the stables (Max 120 days). Race tokens are worth +5 but the addon will show +4 or +6 after you pass a ~120 stat threshold per single use. Non race tokens worth +2 to stats and are available for use once VCS token is obtained.
No way to lower stats outside of plans unless the 640 total stat cap limit has been reached then you will be able to lower stats of the highest stat while raising another. In the event of a tie in two highest stats it will prioritize stats from left to right.

anybody notice some changes to the dig tables? it's been a while since digging in Xarc [S], but 2nd day out here and zero Sif's...
should be in the normal table w/o any burrow/bore. Will have to switch birds tomorrow to verify (been using burrow for the coins).
update: haha, spoke too soon, just got 2 in a row this AM...smh

Just checking in to confirm now after all our findings:
200+ Endurance, capped Receptivity, Treasure Hunter, this is literally all you need to make a min/max digging bird right?
And its considered a bad idea to get burrow/bore cuz they "pollute" the dig pool with garbage pretty much no one wants, and wastes digs, right?
I went with Treasure Hunter + Auto-Regen. We don't think Auto-Regen does anything but since it seems like we have never found out what it does at all (prolly something to do with racing), I took it as a "just in case", since why not.
The only thin discernment really does is give you "free" gysahl greens, so while I end up with some, its not a big deal to bother with it.
I wonder if putting my remaining points into strength is worth it, since it effects the distance the bird travels between digs, and you wanna travel some distance between digs... So might be worth to aim for that as my last "dump" stat.

192 END is the sweet spot if you don't care about losing out on 4 extra digs. This way your remaining stat break points are not hindered. My main bird has 0 DSC as I too think it’s complete waste. This one required a lot of planning to pull off because there exists no super +END/-DSC plan.

Bore and Burrow can have some use depending on if a crafting item is tied behind a vendor npc that is not controlled by any nation.
I do Gallop and 224 STR to cap movement speed and then 224 RCP with either TH/Bore/Burrow (one of each color).

Whats the appeal of having strength, since we have mounts if I actually want to get from point A to B faster I just use a "normal" mount, for digging we dont care much about travel speed do we?

Yea no real point outside of having perfect all in one mount/digger. Not many other options for the use of stats. Going 200END and Canter as second ability gives another 5min, 45min max, of digging time. This use to matter when the necklace was used to call the chocobo but not anymore. And also can just swap in Red silks before calling to get a free Canter.

If I specifically just wanted to target sparkling stones in Qufim, is bore the way to go? Does any second ability enhance this?
By soralin 2025-07-26 01:18:47
I actually wanted to ask:
Have we observed any impact digging skill actually has on results?
Sure it lowers the delay when you zone in, but beyond that does rank 8 vs rank 10 get actually get better results?
I'd hope it does, but I haven't actually seen anyone show any data on a rank 10 vs rank 1 in terms of item yields or success rates.
Does rank 10 just make "you found nothing" happen less often?
Or do you get rarer items?
Or both?

You do get better items as you skill up, and I think part of that is no longer failing the skill check for whatever you tried to dig. However, the impact of 8 to 10 might not be very large because at 8 I imagine you can already dig up most/all of the more common items in a zone.
By Chimerawizard 2025-07-26 12:55:26
I don't remember what things i couldn't dig when I was still a low level digger, but there was an item or three that just would not appear until i had a fairly short wait after zoning to dig.
I'd say the same, you will fail a skill check on items, but almost all of them don't have any level check to fail.
I think one of them was dragon heart in xarc (S). i didn't see that thing drop for like a month before i saw multiple in a single week.
Dig accuracy also seems to rise about the whole time as well. which could be an item listed in two pools, like uncommon & rare, with rare having a skill check.
Quite difficult to pin down since we can't force skill to remain at a lower tier.
By soralin 2025-07-27 15:23:51
Only thing would be to sit and track dig accuracy with the same gear used from R1 to R10, and see if your dig accuracy shows a statistically relevant increase at each rank.
We know certain items (IE ele ores) have always only started showing up at certain ranks.
But I can definitely confirm at rank 8 I have seen every single item in any zone I have spent time digging in, so theres certainly no more remaining items that I cant get.
But its possible I just see more of them as I rank up beyond 8.
What I find really odd, and unintuitive (compared to every other craft), is that I still get the skillup message even on "rank 0" items that were just as common even when I first started digging.
It seems unintuitive to skill up on "low rank" things, that goes counter thesis to every other skill up system in the entire game.
It'd be like getting skillups on level 1 mobs in ronfaure when Im already in the 200+ range, its so weird.

What do you use to view a choco's stats like this?

Chocobo - AzureBreeze
Green Female BastokStables
ISNM Egg: - Compliments to the Chef
Traits: Bore - TreasureFinder
Has No Feature Modifications (Normal beak, legs, feathers)
STR - B
END - B
DSC - A
RCP - S
Every Zone Dig!
Player Related Information
Max Digging Skill
Blue Racing Silks
Chocobo Digging Rope
Other context notes
I have not personally raised and used a Chocobo with Burrow, so my personal digging observations are limited to my use of AzureBreeze.
I have added Burrow Pool Data based on other's findings. Some Burrow Layers were easy to identify because the pools were repeats of Bore Layers, others are unique to Burrow and can't be fully 'confirmed' through my test digs.
My setup will generally convert 300 Greens into 400+ items in a single whistle use worth of dig time.
I do not use add-ons/plug-ins to parse results.
Blue Racing Silks adding to the capacity potential and Discernment freebies stretching out the green stacks makes for a very high available space requirement for effective dig times.
Available Inventory Space can't be a concern during this activity, so a near empty inventory is recommended.
More so in areas where there are non-stacking item results, like Red Jar - Furniture.
Digging Experiences
I view the traits Bore and Burrow as providing a means to access another strata layer when digging.
Mechanically it is just another pool of drops unique to each trait when present on a Chocobo.
Weather, Moon Phase, Day of Week, and Time of Day absolutely impact what items can be dug up, but these modifiers don't necessarily have an impact on items received in every instance, in every zone.
Digging Reward Sequence
Normal Layer (Treasure Item Find Yes/No - Yes, End) No > (Normal Item Find{check for phased pools - weather, day, night} Yes/No, Yes/No Bore/Burrow) > Bore/Burrow Layer (Bore/Burrow Item Find Yes/No, End)
Treasure Items in my description are items like Heavy Metal Plates, Dynamis Currency, Walk of Echo Coins.
Even with a combined months of daily 35 minute digging runs, Treasure Item finds are infrequent.
Combining the potential types in a zone, the number of Treasure Item Finds in terms of a count within a digging session: 1-3 being common, 4-7 being uncommon, and 8+ being extremely rare.
There has never been a Normal Digging Layer Item pool drop as a second drop, nor a Bore Layer Item Result when these Treasure Items appear, always by itself in my observations.
Normal Item Layer, Normal Item success can also include a Bore/Burrow item in the result, getting 2 items for a single dig success.
Flanteus noted 1-3 three items on a Chocobo with both Bore and Burrow.
Weather, Day, and Night modified Normal Item pools can allow an additional Bore/Burrow item result.
Bore Layer and Burrow Layer items can appear alone, not just as a second item on a Normal Item result dig.
I lack a bird setup with both traits to know if a Bore Item and a Burrow Item can appear together and if there is a priority.
An item can be a possible result in both the Normal and Bore/Burrow layers, which can create the chance that you may receive two of the same item in a single dig success.
Acknowledgements and tasks
I would like to thank everyone that posted/shared their data and findings and would like to offer additions, and responses where I can, with this context about my results.
There are a number of existing posts with item findings, but not yet all consolidated. Zone Item lists for zones added in 2016 may not be fully revealed in those posts due to skill conditions, bird trait requirements, and general rarity of the activity to confirm all items are discovered.
My approach here will be to gather existing data, acknowledge sources and providers, and validate and expand lists where I can and outline needs to complete the Burrow point of view which I currently lack access.
MoobooMagoo - Big Thank you. Your posts were instrumental in the completion of Burrow layer dig info, as well as helping understand some(all?) of what the Black Chocobo Costume does during digs.
Catrina - Thank you. Lots of the initial findings posts.
Flanteus - Thank you. More Burrow Data.
Kisagotami - Thank you. Seeing allot of the same sample observations in initial Conquest Zone expansions in 2016.
