At like super off peak hours? Still rough
I'll have you know that Cerberus has a whole 305 accounts logged in right now, thank you. That's not our peak but it's pretty typical.
And we still get things done, lol. Players see that many online and wonder how a server works that way, but it definitely does. 1-200 more players would be nice, though.

Truthfully, if I had a solid group of people that I played with frequently (enough to cover all the bases - crafting, jobs, etc.), having almost the entire world to yourselves would be pretty neat.
But this server population issue is one of the most common issues in the MMO genre, and I don't think a single game out there has got it right.
- One massive global server is either unsustainable or kills community due to phasing
- Server merging comes with a plethora of issues (names, overcrowding, sign of end-times, etc.)
- Doing nothing lets some servers turn into ghost towns
- Locking down servers causes overflow, stagnates new player growth on the locked server, and all the other issues mentioned in this thread
I'm sure I missed some.
The only thing that I've seen that even comes close to addressing an issue like this is incentivized one-way free transfers and locking down transfers back, but NOT locking new character creation. The incentive could be something like a month-long buff of some kind, a r/ex, whatever, only on specific destination servers. Something to tip the scales.
Fixing merc spam? Impossible. Not in today's world. The "MMO gamer" from our youth is a dead culture.

Not in my opinion, that would be depressing if you ask me. Those servers probably drive more returning people to quit than anything

I play on one of those servers, 327 people online in all areas right now. And I can tell you most of us are happy the way it is. We have one big LS, and a plethora of smaller LS's and more than enough people to do stuff with. Also never have to wait for instances, it's great.
Our AH sells decently enough, also. Most of the important stuff is usually in stock. And if it's not there are toms of random shield crafters all over you can ask for help.

I'd expect a returning player to know certain external sources for FFXI information and its community, not just rely on /sea all and whatever else.
Additionally, as I've said many times, people can server hop at will. No ones tied to any server.

2000+ people online at the same time is NOT a balanced population. No server needs that many people online at the same time to play the game. It's of a curse thana blessing. You THINK 2000+ people online to be an effective server, you don't.

Try to spur of the moment build a full aeonic popset, you'll have to farm half of it and take 3 hours.
If you could have the 300 players and still have access to an actual economy, you'd be set.

Try to spur of the moment build a full aeonic popset, you'll have to farm half of it and take 3 hours.
If you could have the 300 players and still have access to an actual economy, you'd be set.

I think a balance is needed, not necessarily a concrete number like 2000. But clearly SE thinks the same, but their methods are lame. They did admit they want to try to add incentives so that will be interesting

WoW uses battlegroups, or clusters of servers that are connected for auction, dungeon queue and PvP battlegrounds. Linked, but not completely unified.

They are never going to add a universal AH, the main push for that is from RMT because they want to farm stuff on low pop servers to sell on Asura (where 90% of their buisness is). It's not going to happen, it's incredibly complicated and counter productive. Also they won't even increase the server data cap from 56k (that is responsible for most of the lag in the game), upgrade from directx8 or fix the ui font icons (that are still made for square CRT monitors) and you think they will do something 100 times more complicated?
They posted how to obtain malignance armor now.

Opening the Malig. Box causes it to change into a piece of Malignance armor.
If the armor is a piece you already have, it will change back into a Malig. Box and you can repeat the process.

The downside? Everyone is now going to spam after patch harder than they did when they added the Shinryu BCNM, so I hope you're ready for hour long queue times. If Lillith shares the same area as Odin etc, queue times are going to be hilariously massive for all of them (and even after this, the drop rate on VE/E is still around 1/10-15. I'm not even going near it for a couple of months
If people are dumb enough to complain about queue times again, after what happened last time and then increasing the merit point to enter there is no hope for them.

They very much did here. I think this is the first mention of either item from SE. Though they still didn't mention the shield. Maybe the 3rd round of the event?

Wether that implies +5 or not, I have no clue.
Normally I would be thinking about ilevel version of the original Ultima and Omega sets, and maybe a couple of new items here and there.

They changed it a few years back, commodity items like crafting materials, consumables, and currency items are now regionwide(so Americas, EU, Taiwan, etc). Random/variable stat items like equipment or battle pets are still battlegroup only, for now.
The XI equivalent would be stuff like reforging materials or ultimate currencies being global, but crafted gear like JSE necks or Su5 weapons still local server only.
It's still one seamless AH interface, it just queries a different pool of listings depending on what you're looking at.

If they add Ultima and omega I expect that they each drop 5 segments related to the piece of armour you want to upgrade to +5. Omega for AF, Ultima for relic.
To enter, you get KI from the box at the end when you use your 18/18 or 25/25 floor KIs so you can only do them each 5x a week. Set drops are 2 segments all equally balanced (20% head/body/hands/legs/feet) with two extra slots based on TH (yeah give THF some love).

That would be cool, but there's no confirmation of +5s. Initially, they described Limbus as offering multiple upgrades iirc. I think people assumed multiple upgrades for the respective JSE pieces, but this could also simply mean the +4s, accessories and another set of things from Ultima/Omega. Furthermore, Fujito was asked about +5s and he was coy about the topic, saying they would implement them of there was enough player interest.
