Am I the only one that thinks the discounted sub campaign is a slap to current players?
You get only get the discounted campaign to XI IF you have a FFXIV sub.
I got really excited at the idea of invited friends who haven’t played in a long time. Thinking the discount applied to new/returning players. Only to find out, no… actually.
Yes and no, in general marketers favor wooing something new and shun loyalty (i've switched cable/phone carriers for years because of this).
But getting more players into the game is good for the current players, and honestly $15ish a month is pretty good value considering the number of hrs most of us put in this game. Of course that's the rub against me trying out XIV , I spend too much time here so why sub to that? If there was a significant benefit (both for $20 or maybe free wardrobes in 11 or something) for having both I would likely do so, not sure if I could balance both games or not.
Conversely if I could buy a year in advance or something for a significant discount I would probably do so.
From SE perspective I think both the R&D and player base of both games are cannibalizing each other, that could be lessened potentially by pricing incentives, its a bit shocking to me this has never happened (or much). I think there's some theoretical world where you can grow the player base of both games (more casuals) which should be healthy (and help the economy) and SE makes more money, but doesn't really put much strain on R&D or the active load (servers/GMs).
Even stuff like free characters < lvl 99 (and maybe crafts level 70) (i suppose people might have AH mules)
Give the game away with codes of all expansions. (people who quit before SoA really need this paywall?)
Or maybe a tiered pricing system based on playtime.
even just having old players log in to say hi improves the game for current players (i'm sure we've all played with at least a handful of folks we'd love to chat with again)
