Uh, you can be a states' rights advocate and still acknowledge waste. The fiscal condition of my state is much better than most other states and I'm still not pleased with a good chunk of where the money goes.
All I'm really saying is that "waste of taxpayer money" is a pretty subjective field, as things a lot of us may consider as such clearly got enough votes to make a reality.
Not everything that our money gets spent on is a result of a ballot initiative. I tend to focus more on the federal government's waste, though, because it takes more of my money and is more stupid when it comes to spending it. If I lived in a place like California, however, my focus might shift.
