You can definately save money with growing your own veggies/fruits but it depends on what you plant and how you stagger it. We won't be planting potatoes anytime soon because they are so cheap in the store.

It depends.

Edit: sorry, no derail!

To add for planting ideas anything that you don't have to replant each year is nice: horseradish, strawberries, asparagus, etc.

Unless they changed corn recently you need quit a bit of it for the cross pollination dealie to work. maybe read the package.

Chanti's seed catalog idea might be good for next year. It's too late to be ordering a catalog now....

I also avoid cherry tomatoes because they go haywire and you have fifty million cherry tomatoes all over the !@#$% place

Evil Farmer Nik's Evil Garden will have...

Several kinds of Peppers
Tomatoes
Cucumbers
Onions
Every Herb you can think of

I cover the dirt with cedar bark mulch for water retention/bug repellent/pleasant smell/soil run off prevention and weed reduction.

a friend said you have to pollinate it by hand in that circumstance, so I might lean on him a bit to get it figured out.

Broccoli and raspberries like I said before. Green peppers, cucumbers. Zucchini, which I found out is great raw. Potatoes, maybe. I'd stay way from corn, doesn't seem to be worth it. Carrots are super easy too. Tomatoes too, but you have to keep an eye on them.

my research on treated wood has resulted in the following:

it's kind of a toss up.

I'm going to go with my gut, & say it's fine. (they quit using arsenic in 2003)

What's the wood for?

I think I saw something where someone used concrete blocks for their garden.

He means learn to shoot them before they eat your garden.

I had thought about this. I should be safe from deer, I've never seen one in our neighborhood, & I have a chainlink fence & a sheepdog.

Rabbits on the other hand... my plan was to put 2 feet of rod down then circle the perimeter of the plot in chicken wire so when it's all said and done, bunnies shouldn't be able to penetrate it? I would think?

Ok, that's what I thought. If you want to be safe, find some old concrete blocks, like these:

LOL!

When it comes to home gardens for veggies and fruits, I know a lot of people in upstate NY that will just pour out a million tips and tricks. At least those hippies are good for something, well besides pot, lol.

my viewpoints are skewed, I'll admit.

to say the least. please stay on topic, there are plenty of other threads for your general 'musings'.
Sure.

Use this:

Even if you have to ship it from wherever, my sister swears by this (she grows a small garden on her property, I asked her specifically for you Mosin).

I figure I owe you at least a little tip. It also helps if you use netting for vine plants, instead of the usual stick in the soil method.

No problem, and I'm not sure if anyone mentioned it, but make sure to rotate the crops out.

Meaning don't plant the same thing over and over again, just in case you didn't know.

You homebrew also, right? (Well, it's not me that homebrews. That's the beau's meditative "thing".) If it was you, are you going be brave and give hops a go?

EDIT: I'm surprised Lordgrim isn't in here jabbering about gardening in anticipation of "the revolution" or the day the grid goes down. You know it's coming, man!

If you're using treated landscape timbers or the like you'll be fine for the most part shouldn't be any adverse effects on your garden. The only things you don't specifically want to use are old Railroad ties. While they may look like they'd be great for landscaping and stuff they have a bunch of oil and other junk in them and will kill your stuff off pretty fast. (probably mentioned earlier in the thread not sure)

As for the rabbits,

The chicken wire might work, might not work. They're sneaky ***. You can try planting some marigolds around your garden too sometimes that works. (They'll also get you some other bugs like butterflies and such which are always nice to have around)

If you want a good fertilizer try to go with something time released Osmocote is a fairly decent brand. You can usually put it down when you plant everything and not have to fert again for another 2 months or so just sprinkle it around the plants near the base, you can try mixing it into the soil for the ones you start from seeds (green beans, carrots, beets, etc.) I'd avoid plant spikes (the green stake things you see sometimes) they're just nitrogen boosters and don't really help promote good plant growth, just fast growth.

Only suggestion I have with you making a box for your garden is make sure you've got good drainage. After you get it all set up and everything water the soil in and wait an hour or two and make sure the water is going through well and not sitting. If you've got a mud pit you might have to change things up. A lot of plants can't stand wet feet and you might rot them out if you aren't careful. Reading some stuff though, it looks like you're getting a good handle on things and I think you'll do fine. Best of luck on your garden~

You need a special bed just for asparagus

why is that?
They need loose, sandy soil and have to be planted DEEP.

I am talking crowns here, I know nothing about starting them from seed.

Leviathan.Vienne said: »
asparagus are difficult to grow and you need a sandsoil with lots of sun if you want to be succesfull. the asparagusbed is quite a bit higher then the rest of your soil too and you have to move the bed every year btw, you cant grow asparagus twice on the same parcel.
its already a real hastle to let the seeds shoot....i'd really try something different then asparagus
Struck through part is inaccurate, asparagus produces for 5 - 7 years. Farmers and gardeners regularly replant asparagus in the same beds.

I think Vienne may be thinking about potatoes.
