Wind element seems to be associated with daggers in a lot of ways I think that's just how SE decided to do it, from the wind Weapon Skills to well, it even goes way back to old religions. The dagger represented the element of air in pagan religions and rituals. They sort of take a 180 on it for other weapon skills though, most the powerful non magic weapon skills are earth and darkness and make darkness chains. Perhaps alluding to the dark past and underhanded nature of daggers as tools for assassins, and those who fight dishonestly... It doesn't all line up but just my passing thought on it.

I could be way off base but if we were to assign elemental representations to each weapon:

Dagger: Wind
Swords: Fire
Great Sword: Ice
Scythe: Darkness
Polearm: Lightning
Katana: Water
Clubs: Light
Staves: Earth
Ranged: Fire
Axe: Wind (or Lightning)
Great Axe and Hand to Hand seem all physical
And Great Katana seems to defy much classification as well.

Of course none of them are strong correlations, but it seems to be thematic at least some of the time.
