Considering how many women get lighter sentences for the same crime, I'd chalk it up to gender differences being alive and well. Sure, women get the raw end of the deal on quite a few things, but when it comes to violent crime, they usually get the "she was probably PMSing" style excused leniency. Who knows what kind of abuse led up to the incident, but people who are commenting factually on the nature of gender bias in the criminal justice system aren't automatically chauvinists or sexist pigs.

A friend of mine had a medically unstable live-in girlfriend. One day she's goes off the deep end because he made a distasteful joke (he's no saint) and starts destroying the apartment. She's breaking his stuff as well as the apartment itself. He tries to calm her down and eventually just holds onto her and calls the cops. They both claimed he was just trying to calm her down, but when the police came, they arrested him for domestic battery and unlawful imprisonment. He took a plea deal like a moron and had to get a domestic violence evaluation which surprisingly recommended 52 weeks of treatment at his expense. (which is the recommendations for 95% of evaluations)

She wasn't even charged with disturbing the peace and the prosecutor refused to drop the charges saying that she was sick and was protecting her abuser.

I hate to belittle the real abuse a lot of women suffer, but FFS, how does that make ANY sense?!

Who'd have thunk preconceived stereotypes about females would find themselves codified into law. Laws that find themselves a reflection of the society we live in and in turn an indictment against the men who drafted the laws.

I say men because lets be serious, females in the legal system are a recent occurrence. The jury of your peers feeds off the stereotypes and thus we have society where violent women are hit with the kiddie gloves, men are shafted in custody hearings, male rape charges get you laughed out of a precinct and things like paternity leave (i mean *** you for wanting to be a good father) still get snickers from the peanut gallery.

So gents, raise a glass. To your forefathers good works.

I have a friend who has legal custody of his kids and is still getting his paycheck garnished to pay child support to his ex-wife who left the kids on his doorstep. Due to the way child welfare laws are setup, he had to wait almost 6 months to get the hearing to get full custody, now he's waiting another 3-4 months for the hearing that would keep her from receiving child support for the kids she isn't supporting. And, chances are, he won't be receiving any child support from her or any of the year's worth of child support he was paying to her unjustly. I doubt those kind of cases are rare, but they're probably not the norm.
