Quote: The Justice Department is claiming, in a little-noticed court filing, that a federal agent had the right to impersonate a young woman online by creating a Facebook page in her name without her knowledge. Government lawyers also are defending the agent’s right to scour the woman's seized cell phone and to post photographs — including racy pictures of her and even one of her young son and niece — to the phony social media account, which the agent was using to communicate with suspected criminals.
The woman, Sondra Arquiett, who then went by the name Sondra Prince, first learned her identity had been commandeered in 2010 when a friend asked about the pictures she was posting on her Facebook page. There she was, for anyone with an account to see — posing on the hood of a BMW, legs spread, or, in another, wearing only skimpy attire.

So basically the DEA views the lives of their agents more valuable. They involved this woman and her child in their operations without her consent, while it might be legal, it places their lives in danger.

My question to this is, why? Is this woman under suspicion of something In particular? Obviously, there is a reason for it or unless the DEA can impersonate us online. I'm glad I don't put my rl name on Facebook.

I'm glad I don't put my rl name on Facebook. It looks like they used a real person's data to communicate with wanted person(s). Someone who had no social presence online.
Quote: Not long before, law enforcement officers had arrested Arquiett, alleging she was part of a drug ring. A judge, weighing evidence that the single mom was a bit player who accepted responsibility, ultimately sentenced Arquiett to probation. But while she was awaiting trial, Sinnigen created the fake Facebook page using Arquiett’s real name, posted photos from her seized cell phone, and communicated with at least one wanted fugitive — all without her knowledge.
...
The government’s response lays out an argument justifying Sinnigen’s actions: “Defendants admit that Plaintiff did not give express permission for the use of photographs contained on her phone on an undercover Facebook page, but state the Plaintiff implicitly consented by granting access to the information stored in her cell phone and by consenting to the use of that information to aid in an ongoing criminal investigations [sic].”

Last I checked, creating a facebook account in somebody else's name on purpose is identify theft, the department should be charged with it.

Keep voting Democrat everyone! Sorry Alti, National socialism security is a bipartisan issue. So is ignoring police abuses.
Then again so is making noise about reigning those abuses in while giving the assorted uniformed police and security agencies even more power.

Keep voting Democrat everyone! Actually, I'm pretty sure a Republican administration would do the exact same thing.

Not really, as free-market indicates that they don't get influenced by outside parties, even if the outside parties are themselves.

Fenrir.Candlejack said: »Ok. Lady gets arrested and tried as a bit player in a drug ring, admits her part in it, regardless of how small. The DEA (Drug enforcement agency), highjacks her identity and sets up a false Facebook page in her name in order to hide the fact her drug ring buddies were actually communicating with the feds instead of her while continuing an ongoing investigation...
Hm, seems the lady has no real say in this matter, especially if the DEA's packin' warrants for said investigation, which they more than likely are. What?
1. Just because you get probation for something does NOT mean you give up your right to privacy. Or give up the right to vet photos of yourself and child that are put online
2. This was used for "ongoing investigations". Not just the drug ring she was involved in.
Quote: -Defendants admit that Plaintiff did not give express permission for the use of photographs contained on her phone on an undercover Facebook page, but state the Plaintiff implicitly consented by granting access to the information stored in her cell phone and by consenting to the use of that information to aid in ongoing criminal investigations.
-In response to Paragraph 15 of the Complaint, Defendants admit that Sinnigen used the undercover Facebook page to send a “friend” request to a wanted fugitive who was evading arrest.
-16. In response to Paragraph 16 of the Complaint, Defendant admits that Sinnigen accepted “friend” requests sent by others to the undercover Facebook page

The question then is:
if she goes onto that facebook page and says "this is not me!" would she be charged with hindering an investigation?

The question then is:
if she goes onto that facebook page and says "this is not me!" would she be charged with hindering an investigation? Well facebook deleted the page when they found out it was fake.
Said it violated their policies since it was using a persons identity without their knowledge.
So would that constitute hindering in an investigation?

This is more of a civil matter, Don't think the Feds cared about a civil suit stemming from this as much as catching their targets. The persons targeted can't invoke any of the rights of the lady and the lady will have to go to court and show damages, also that she had a right/ expectation that was breached, which may or may not even hold up if the Judge finds as a matter of law the Feds were acting within their rights.

Isn't identity theft a felony? The US is a signatory in the ITU laws that forbid this kind of practice.
