In America a white man is ALWAYS wrong because the WASP is a privileged class! There is a hierarchy of minority privilege and the way it is maintained is via political correctness.
This is insane. You should be ashamed for spouting this nonsense, you really should.

Political correctness has gone above and beyond just attempting to create an atmosphere of mutual respect. It's now just an excuse to severely punish people who ever say anything that could be interpreted as a slight against a minority group. Who's being punished exactly? This woman wrote an opinion piece yet she's getting the usual treatment from those here who think that speaking up about anything makes you a screeching PC harpy.
Bahamut.Baconwrap said: »Apparent to who? You? Who are those many people? WeHo? I meant many people here, sorry. It must have gotten left out of my edit. I still have no idea what you're getting at with the quotes you're pulling out of other threads. I don't see anything logically inconsistent.
Some may consider it being about respect, but for the most part it's a bunch of people being *** pansies. Would you antagonize your boss in this way? Your mom/dad/grandparents? Go up to a black coworker or supervisor you're not totally familiar with and pull the black mammy act. Then when they act offended, tell them to stop being a *** pussy. It should be hilarious.

I'm not gay.
But to your point: I tell people all the time to not be so damn sensitive, but I've only once ever really got in a situation where I pissed some dude off.
I am usually in environments where people have a decent attitude around them.
As for the person: It was some numbnuts whose ex I was banging, and he got pissy when I made some crack about something that was on tv.
It's their weak mind that's the issue.
It's almost always about knowing your audience, don't be obtuse.
edit: I think we strayed off the point of comments in the public sphere and overall attitudes of persons to twist it into private attitudes r workplace environments, the two aren't exactly parallel for starters, and I didn't fully pick up on it til the later half as I'm dozing off as it is. So I'll just say this: Don't be silly Pleebs.

Public or private, what's the difference? The article in the OP doesn't make the distinction. It's a matter of basic respect. If you can't say/act a certain way in one environment, then why is it somehow ok in the public sphere?
I know it's a matter of knowing your audience. That's why I specifically mentioned familiarity. I realize we all say things in front of people we're comfortable with that we wouldn't say otherwise, but I highly doubt anyone could honestly say there aren't certain boundaries in any social situation.
Edit: Also, I don't know what being gay has to do with what I said lol.

What in the hell is EWEM?
Evil White European Male. WASP is discriminatory so they use EWEM instead. Its central to the belief that the world was a perfect gia paradise until the EWEM raped and pillaged it. If we purge all the EWEMs then the world can return to its perfect state again.

What? EWEM? I move that we make this the "Invent new, silly acronyms" thread. Or hey! If you feel the need to share some oldie but goodies, have at it!
By Ravenn42 2014-07-10 09:56:22
This thread has gone in so many directions all I can come up with is Black woman are upset that white gay's are trying to steal their thunder on the minority list. And that white people can not dance.
Although after having to watch like 6 seasons of So you think you can dance with my wife, that is not close to accurate and Black people still can't swim.

As for the rest, but I'm too lazy to counteract it with any articulate point, so I'll just say I disagree and move on.

Quote: So, you aren’t a strong black woman, or a ghetto girl, or any of that other foolery that some of you with trash Vine accounts try to be. It’s okay. You don’t have to be. No one asked you to be. You weren’t ever meant to be. What you can be, however, is part of the solution. Is she trying to say that some people were meant to be ghetto girls?
I think the whole problem with this in the first place is that she's associating herself with stereotypes... like being a black woman is a stereotype lol...
Quote: while you’re gasping at the heat and the steam of the strong truth tea I just spilled I lol'd pretty hard at this.
The line she should have pointed out is that there is a big difference between being black, a woman or both and being what is perceived as "acting black" and so on...

I agree. If you're going to embrace stereotypes at least have the candor to permit others to as well.
It is my opinion that otherwise this is just another:

OPs argument is bunk but telling people to 'stop being pansies' merely dismisses the issue of racial disparity that anyone who isn't braindead can readily notice.
There is a clear difference between being a social justice warrior and pointing out that things are pretty *** up if you're not the proper shade in this country. Things like not being able to get loans, employment discrimination, neighborhoods you're allowed to live in, access to education, incarceration rates et al.
But keep talking about how people are just overly PC. You might as well put your fingers in your ears.

OP is clearly trying to segue into that topic as cultural appropriation ultimately leads into discussions about power structure and privilege. Personally, I think OP has been watching too much reality TV.

Power structure and privilege exist in minority groups. Simply look at lighter skinned latinos and blacks and how they carry themselves around darker skinned members of their own ethnicity.
Minority privilege is a very real thing.

A gay white guy calling himself a ghetto girl has something to do with racial disparity and is *** up? Apparently. The logic of some people is as follows:
Quote: "I don't find this offensive therefore no one else should." Good for you. You don't have to deal with similar situations. Have some cake to go with your privilege.
We must be sensitive to the woman writing this article because we don't have to "deal with similar situations." Simply because we don't find a gay white guy calling himself a "ghetto girl" offensive doesn't mean the African-American woman will not.

If you do, why is this example of "political correctness" valid while certain others are not?
Well according to your logic the African-American woman writing this article has every single privilege right to feel this way.
Quote:
"I don't find this offensive therefore no one else should." Good for you. You don't have to deal with similar situations. Have some cake to go with your privilege.
Her message to gay white men is pretty clear:
Quote:
Check your privilege.
Just because gay white men don't find it offensive doesn't mean an African American woman doesn't find it offensive.
Seems to me minority privilege is the key term of this discussion. I have no idea what point you're trying to make with my quote. It's apparent that many people won't take offense to gay guys acting black. Doesn't mean she doesn't have a valid point in there somewhere. It can be obnoxious to have the worst, most stereotypical aspects of your culture repeated over and over again or to have your particular identity used as a punchline to a joke. I mean, do the people that lisp their Ss realize that's not how most gay people talk or that the Southern mammy isn't how many black women act? Maybe, but it doesn't make it any less annoying at times.
You can call it privilege all you like but it's basically just treating others with the same modicum of respect you'd extend to any stranger you're not well acquainted with.
"Please respect me by not doing anything I find annoying. Never mind that I don't respect you by insisting that I get to tell you what to do."
Wow bro, this has got to be archive worthy. It's totally all about Pleebo...
I might suggest that if you secretly have a vagina, you might remove the sand you had within it. But then again if I said that, I'm pretty sure you would be offended.

If you or a loved one has sand there please consult your local physician
Dear White Gays: Stop Stealing Black Female Culture
Quote: You are not a black woman, and you do not get to claim either blackness or womanhood. There is a clear line between appreciation and appropriation
Nothing about whiteness will get a white person in trouble the way blackness can get a black person shot down in his tracks. These are just facts. It’s not entirely the fault of white people. It’s not as if you can help being born white in America, any more than I can help being born black in America.
The truth is that America is a country that operates on systems of racism in which we all participate, whether consciously or unconsciously, to our benefit or to our detriment, and that system allows white people to succeed. This system also creates barriers so that minorities, such as black people, have a much harder time being able to do things like vote and get houses and not have to deal with racists and stuff. You know. Casual.
But while you’re gasping at the heat and the steam of the strong truth tea I just spilled, what’s even worse about all of this, if you thought things could get even crappier, is the fact that all of this is exponentially worse for black women. A culture of racism is bad enough, but pairing it with patriarchal structures that intend to undermine women’s advancement is like double-fisting bleach and acid rain.
At the end of the day, if you are a white male, gay or not, you retain so much privilege. What is extremely unfairly denied you because of your sexuality could float back to you, if no one knew that you preferred the romantic and sexual company of men over women. (You know what I’m talking about. Those “anonymous” torsos on Grindr, Jack’d and Adam4Adam, show very familiar heterosexual faces to the public.) The difference is that the black women with whom you think you align so well, whose language you use and stereotypical mannerisms you adopt, cannot hide their blackness and womanhood to protect themselves the way that you can hide your homosexuality. We have no place to hide, or means to do it even if we desired them.
In all of the ways that your gender and race give you so much, in those exact same ways, our gender and race work against our prosperity. To claim that you’re a minority woman just for the sake of laughs, and to say that the things allowed her or the things enjoyed by her are done better by you isn’t cute or funny. First of all, it’s aggravating as hell. Second, it’s damaging and perpetuating of yet another set of aggressions against us.
All of this being said, you should not have to stop liking the things you like. This is not an attempt to try to suck the fun out of your life. Appreciating a culture and appropriating one are very, very different things, with a much thicker line than some people think, if you use all of the three seconds it takes to be considerate before you open your mouth. If you love some of the same things that some black women love, by all means, you and your black girlfriends go ahead and rock the hell out. Regardless of what our privileges and lack of privileges are, regardless of the laws and rhetoric that have attempted to divide us, we are equal, even though we aren’t the same, and that is okay. Claiming our identity for what’s sweet without ever having to taste its sour is not. Breathing fire behind ugly stereotypes that reduce black females to loud caricatures for you to emulate isn’t, either.
So, you aren’t a strong black woman, or a ghetto girl, or any of that other foolery that some of you with trash Vine accounts try to be. It’s okay. You don’t have to be. No one asked you to be. You weren’t ever meant to be. What you can be, however, is part of the solution.
Check your privilege. Try to strengthen the people around you.
I love this article for a number of reasons. One it is the PC police hitting the LGBT community back, which it fully deserves. Two it's fairly accurate.
