Being 'white' has nothing to do with skin color and being 'gay' has nothing to do with sexual preference / orientation.

So I can be black if I believe it ! Time to bust out some 50 cent and 20 inch rims !
Or you are saying that culture/environment defines more of how we act than the color of our skin. I always thought being white means I'll never dance in public.

And yes it's more cultural / environmental / social thing than anything.

In America a white man is ALWAYS wrong because the WASP is a privileged class! There is a hierarchy of minority privilege and the way it is maintained is via political correctness.

Usually it takes a few pages before you can't keep your points straight. Do you agree with the original argument or not? If you do, why is this example of "political correctness" valid while certain others are not?
This thread so far makes no sense.

Two it's fairly accurate. Oh! That was in reference to how I do see some gays trying to "act like Beyonce," should have clarified that.
I think it's pretty clear my views on PC policing!
why is this example of "political correctness" valid while certain others are not? Political correctness is another way of saying I deserve special privileges, please adjust your life accordingly to accommodate my hyper-sensitivities.

Hmm, nevermind. Carry on.

White people can't dance, they have a full body sporadic aneurism coupled with uncontrollable and un-coordinated body movements due to what looks like a waking seizure.
Notice that white folk barely move in dance videos. Mostly shrug their shoulders and lots of hand movement.

Well according to your logic the African-American woman writing this article has every single privilege right to feel this way.
Quote: "I don't find this offensive therefore no one else should." Good for you. You don't have to deal with similar situations. Have some cake to go with your privilege.
Her message to gay white men is pretty clear:
Quote: Check your privilege.
Just because gay white men don't find it offensive doesn't mean an African American woman doesn't find it offensive.
Seems to me minority privilege is the key term of this discussion.

Black people do start a lot of things that are whitewashed by mainstream American... but that's true of the gay community as well, so I feel this article is a little off-base with that point.
Addressing her argument about how being a gay white male gives you more privilege than being a straight black woman, I'm not so sure. I agree that sexuality isn't self-evident in the same sense as race, but there are states in this country where employment discrimination against homosexuals is still legal... and countries where being gay is a capital crime. The whole article seems catty and petty.
No good can come from this topic. These conversations always degenerate into who suffers/suffered more aka victim-hood contest, or what we're seeing so far in the thread, "OMG PC is the worst, hurr durr I'm a straight WASP Republican and I'm the real victim in today's society!".

Seems to me minority privilege is the key term of this discussion. I have no idea what point you're trying to make with my quote. It's apparent that many people won't take offense to gay guys acting black. Doesn't mean she doesn't have a valid point in there somewhere. It can be obnoxious to have the worst, most stereotypical aspects of your culture repeated over and over again or to have your particular identity used as a punchline to a joke. I mean, do the people that lisp their Ss realize that's not how most gay people talk or that the Southern mammy isn't how many black women act? Maybe, but it doesn't make it any less annoying at times.
You can call it privilege all you like but it's basically just treating others with the same modicum of respect you'd extend to any stranger you're not well acquainted with.

Political correctness has gone above and beyond just attempting to create an atmosphere of mutual respect. It's now just an excuse to severely punish people who ever say anything that could be interpreted as a slight against a minority group.

Apparent to who? You? Who are those many people? WeHo?
Quote: So once again we're at the point where you argue that since it doesn't offend WeHo it doesn't offend anybody.
Are you acknowledging that a fringe opinion exists?
Doesn't mean she doesn't have a valid point in there somewhere. Somewhere? It seems to me your not being consistent with your logic:
Quote: "I don't find this offensive therefore no one else should." Good for you. You don't have to deal with similar situations. Have some cake to go with your privilege.
You can call it privilege Quote: It's apparent that many people won't take offense to gay guys acting black.
That sounds like privilege to me.
EDIT: The point is it's one thing to mutually respect one another. Respect doesn't encompass walking on egg-shells. There comes a point where PC policing can be used as a method of oppression and is outright ridiculous. Fringe minority opinions are dangerous e.g. MEChA.

I didn't miss your point, I don't agree with its sentiment. All "political correctness" really means is "show me respect and consideration, regardless of my race/sex/orientation/etc." It's about being polite and decent to others, not about special privileges but basic respect.
I sometimes say things that might offend another person. When they come to me and say "hey, that genuinely makes me uncomfortable because (whatever)", I don't have a problem apologizing and not repeating the offense. Why is this so difficult?
Dear White Gays: Stop Stealing Black Female Culture
Quote: You are not a black woman, and you do not get to claim either blackness or womanhood. There is a clear line between appreciation and appropriation
Nothing about whiteness will get a white person in trouble the way blackness can get a black person shot down in his tracks. These are just facts. It’s not entirely the fault of white people. It’s not as if you can help being born white in America, any more than I can help being born black in America.
The truth is that America is a country that operates on systems of racism in which we all participate, whether consciously or unconsciously, to our benefit or to our detriment, and that system allows white people to succeed. This system also creates barriers so that minorities, such as black people, have a much harder time being able to do things like vote and get houses and not have to deal with racists and stuff. You know. Casual.
But while you’re gasping at the heat and the steam of the strong truth tea I just spilled, what’s even worse about all of this, if you thought things could get even crappier, is the fact that all of this is exponentially worse for black women. A culture of racism is bad enough, but pairing it with patriarchal structures that intend to undermine women’s advancement is like double-fisting bleach and acid rain.
At the end of the day, if you are a white male, gay or not, you retain so much privilege. What is extremely unfairly denied you because of your sexuality could float back to you, if no one knew that you preferred the romantic and sexual company of men over women. (You know what I’m talking about. Those “anonymous” torsos on Grindr, Jack’d and Adam4Adam, show very familiar heterosexual faces to the public.) The difference is that the black women with whom you think you align so well, whose language you use and stereotypical mannerisms you adopt, cannot hide their blackness and womanhood to protect themselves the way that you can hide your homosexuality. We have no place to hide, or means to do it even if we desired them.
In all of the ways that your gender and race give you so much, in those exact same ways, our gender and race work against our prosperity. To claim that you’re a minority woman just for the sake of laughs, and to say that the things allowed her or the things enjoyed by her are done better by you isn’t cute or funny. First of all, it’s aggravating as hell. Second, it’s damaging and perpetuating of yet another set of aggressions against us.
All of this being said, you should not have to stop liking the things you like. This is not an attempt to try to suck the fun out of your life. Appreciating a culture and appropriating one are very, very different things, with a much thicker line than some people think, if you use all of the three seconds it takes to be considerate before you open your mouth. If you love some of the same things that some black women love, by all means, you and your black girlfriends go ahead and rock the hell out. Regardless of what our privileges and lack of privileges are, regardless of the laws and rhetoric that have attempted to divide us, we are equal, even though we aren’t the same, and that is okay. Claiming our identity for what’s sweet without ever having to taste its sour is not. Breathing fire behind ugly stereotypes that reduce black females to loud caricatures for you to emulate isn’t, either.
So, you aren’t a strong black woman, or a ghetto girl, or any of that other foolery that some of you with trash Vine accounts try to be. It’s okay. You don’t have to be. No one asked you to be. You weren’t ever meant to be. What you can be, however, is part of the solution.
Check your privilege. Try to strengthen the people around you.
I love this article for a number of reasons. One it is the PC police hitting the LGBT community back, which it fully deserves. Two it's fairly accurate.
