Navok claims that Project Flare will allow for every player to be on a single server rather than split into shards like in current MMOs. It also allows for a fully dynamic, deformable and modifiable world without the need for patches or updates. He also brags that hacking and cheating would no longer be possible.
I LOL'd @ this. That has 'challenge accepted' all over it. I'd be interested in just how this world would go to ruin once people were introduced. Maybe we'll see FF17: Skycrystal or something.

Mix this with Kinect technology, remake FFXI in high-res graphics, and make it so all combat/magic abilities are determined by user gestures/actions, instead of macro commands. They could literally add NPC trainers to the game just to teach you how to fight in various styles and how to cast spells.
The one downside to playing an MMO in VR would be fighting large mobs - I'd probably have a permanent crink in my neck.

But we will see....

Seriously, SE should partner with Weta Digital and make a VR Final Fantasy MMO.

There are other things out already like sensors that stick to hands and feet to track movement and controlls or a new version that suppose be even better.
Try http://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/ for various VR news and game adaptions.

All I can think of when I read this news is that the major ISP's (in America) will throttle the hell out of this traffic until SE pays them an arm and a leg.

While I do think it's pretty much impossible to completely avoid hacking of some form or another, if everything is taking place server side and only the resulting visuals are displayed to the player and only valid input can be sent then it would significantly reduce players ability to do so.
A good example of this is windower's TParty. It only works because the server sends you everyone in the alliance's TP values despite the game client only using your own for anything. If they just didn't send it, we couldn't harvest it and display it in a plugin.
But for a company like SE who didn't even put server side validation on incoming packets with 14... I don't have much faith here.

supercomputer or not, rendering visuals for an entire mmo playerbase through the cloud is difficult(especially when you consider many will expect 1920x1080 and possible oversample).. and if you don't have fast internet, you won't be able to keep a high quality stream.. it's much much more traffic than any current online game uses as well, terrible for anyone with a bandwidth cap
the way i see it, this is a demo designed to grab attention more than an idea that'll be usable in the near future

I honestly can't see it being viable. Even with fiber to fiber connections, you're going to have a visible lag time between hitting a button and your character responding. This would be considerably bad in movement. Perhaps there is something I'm missing.
Perhaps they've secretly developed quantum internet connections through entangled pairs...

Well, it could work if you initiate Hundred Fists, and every punch gesture works toward building up a bar that triggers multiple punches in game.

This was one of the comments on Polygon:
Quote: I’d be interested to see more technical details on this, but either the presenters have been misleading or the reporter has not really understood and reported incorrectly.
Example, …
Saying the entire world is rendered at once. … This just makes no sense, you would only render what is visible to the viewport, you don’t render a rock 5km behind the viewport. Rendering is the act of drawing the image, that is viewed from the geometry, lighting and textures.
Assuming the super computer isn't actually rendering the image and streaming it to a client, the rendering would be done client side. So there would still be LOD (Pop-in, lower detail at distance), it would be loading required data on the fly, as move around. There’s no way around this if using a limited power GPU, and if using the Super Computer to render, you’d need 1 Super Computer per User.
All I can assume is, they’re using the Supercomputer for tracking in world assets. In a typical single player game, if there’s a deer walking through the woods, if you get far enough away from it it stops existing and stops having its path finding and AI handled.
Where as, this might be handling all the AI and World Assets etc, off on a large computer. Which suggests they’re working on an MMPOG or something similar, but that has a level of persistence.
