A dating site that tries to connect Mormon singles with one another has encountered legal resistance from a surprising source: the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

The business arm of the Mormon church has filed a lawsuit to prevent the dating site from using the name Mormon Match. The church is attempting to assert its trademark over the name, but the Electronic Frontier Foundation has recently jumped in to defend the website's founder, insisting that the church is being inordinately aggressive in its intellectual property claims.

The case began last month when Intellectual Reserve Inc., the LDS church's holding company, filed suit in the federal district court of Southern Texas against Mormon Match's founder Jonathan Eller. Utah-based Intellectual Reserve claims trademarks on several terms related to the church, including "Mormon," "Book of Mormon," "Mormon.org," "Mormon Tabernacle Choir," and "The Mormon Church" among others.

But in an amicus brief filed with the court, the EFF argues that "Mormon" is simply too broad a term to be claimed this way. Attorneys for the digital civil liberties group, say it would be like Taco Bell suing Taco Cabana over the rights to the word "taco."

"Cases such as this one, where the affirmative defense of fair use is so clear from the outset, can and should be dismissed at the earliest possible stage of litigation," the EFF's lawyers wrote, urging the judge to throw out the case before allowing more time and money to be spent on further court proceedings.

The EFF said Eller's use of Mormon is a textbook example of fair-usage.

"The name of this service simply describes what it's doing – matching up Mormons," said Corynne McSherry, EFF's intellectual property director, in a written statement. "Trademarks are supposed to be used to protect from unfair competition, not to stifle a small business or to control language."

Eller, whose site is still in a pre-registration mode and still hasn't officially launched, has filed a countersuit of his own against Intellectual Reserve. The next hearing in this case is scheduled for Aug. 8.

I don't believe I've seen the word "Morman" and "Intellectual" in the same paragraph ever. Granted, "Intellectual" was part of the compound word "Intellectual Property" but it was still a pretty huge dissonance.

If, and I say "IF" this actually goes to court, it would set a precedent for limiting the use of "Christian (referencing the religion)" "Christianity" "The Bible", etc. should the LDS Mormon church actually win.

Of course, the example in the article would also be hilarious, and would eventually lead up to that scene in Demolition Man, where "Taco Bell" reigned as the supreme restaurant.

Taco Bell knows all about the benefits of publicity. Back when journalists were making a stink about the quality of their products, the company essentially shrugged its shoulders and said, "Our customers aren't ignorant, but thanks for giving us some free airtime."

They can, and will, if you rustle their jimmies enough. But they'll also offer you a beverage and a snack, with some good ol' conversation about their religion, until you understand, and follow suit.

I know you're trolling, but Mormons did invent, among other things, the T.V. and Pong. Gamers shouldn't hate on them too hard.

Mormons didn't invent Pong.

Nor television, since it technically originated in Germany in 1884, by Paul Gottlieb Nipkow. Since then, there have been advancements made to the original design by Boris Rosing, John Logie Baird, Kalman Tihanyi, Kenjiro Takayanagi, and Leon Theremin.

Note: None were Mormon.

Pong is an adaptation of Ping Pong, or Table Tennis, which the former, originated in early China, as a means for leisure, and hand/eye co-ordination.

If you type "who invented television" into Google Philo Farnsworth comes up, but if you want to split hairs you can question anyone who ever invented anything pretty much. Also, you know I was referring to Pong the video game, so accrediting it to the inventors of ping pong is just trying too hard to be contrary.

Mormons are quite creative. A considerable amount of the most popular science fiction and fantasy writing is done by Mormon writers, and not just the Book of Mormon!

Seriously, though, quite a lot of innovations in computer and program design have come out of Utah for whatever strange reason. I can't remember which, but one of the most popular free apps on the iPhone App Store 2 years ago was coded by a 14-year-old Mormon boy using library computers. I guess they need something to do with no R-rated movies and alcohol?

Except Allan Alcorn and Nolan Bushnell weren't Mormon,
and was a creation of Atari Incorporated, which was founded by the aforementioned names, and was created as a training exercise.

Philo Farnsworth was a "television pioneer", not the inventor.

What he did invent, was the first all-electronic television system, that was complete and fully functional, but was not the inventor of the television concept.

It's like anything, you're always going to run into morons. I just find the phrase militant atheism to be silly as hell, because a militant atheist compared to someone who is militantly religious is starkly different.

Nolan Bushnell was a Mormon. Do some friggin' research for once. And I never claimed Farnsworth created the television concept. So he didn't invent the idea, he just figured out how to make it work. Wow, what an idiot he must be in that case. How silly of me to give a Mormon credit for an amazing achievement.

I never said it took away from his achievement, dumb ***. Additionally, i did do my research, and most of, if not all of the creation of Pong, actually came from Alcorn, and not Bushnell.

For all intended purposes, Pong was the creation primarily of Allan Alcorn, under the co-founded company of Atari.

Also, you were the retard who posted "when you type in 'who invented television' Philo Farnsworth came up". All i did, was provide information that set the record straight. So now who's not doing their research?

Ok, So Bushnell is an inactive member of the Church of Latter Day Saints.

So was it all that necessary to launch a semantic-based tirade against my statement in the first place? Also, name-calling is super classy. I didn't know you PC folks used "retard" nowadays.
