Aint about him having a lot of money as much as it is about his position in the company.
Just a few weeks ago it was the issue with that DuPont guy. Money talks...in more ways than one. For some, it can help them avoid heat. For others, it makes them a target. Im serious. If this was some Walmart Employee who said this crap, nobody would care.
He's set on a higher standard because 1) He's a billionaire, 2) he owns an NBA team, 3) He employs Blacks people and (dingdingdingding!!!) 4) He doesn't want black people at his games. I would say that by way of #3 and #4, by exposing his contradictory bigotry, it produces a behavior in the masses to set a better standards in themselves because of #1 and #2.

My 2 cents (with interest) is:
What he said was shitty, but TMZ had no right releasing that information to the public.
But to be honest, he deserves his ban, and I applaud the new Commish for doing is job and doing it well.
So, tbh, I'm on the fence on this. You don't really sound like you're on the fence. There are two separate issues (invasion of his privacy and punishment for a long history of being a publicity liability) and you have two distinct opinions on it. You're allowed to have separate opinions on separate issues that don't cleave to some arbitrary side.

I would say it's because he's in a position of leadership, but poor, naïve Bloodrose should know better than that.

I'm just curious about this need to qualify what Sterling said as if the fact that it was a "private" conversation somehow dampens his comments. Or that the reaction by the NBA was somehow unjustified when they're just acting in their own monetary best interests. I personally hate this overhyped ***.
its literally what a man said. The famous guy made a racist comment, and nothing else was done, Well, except for his biracial girlfriends emotional impulse leak to TMZ..which started all this nonsensical *** shaming.
I personally am offended for him as with all the real *** up racism based crimes go on the media is stuck on a private faux pas with racial tensions.

Perhaps you should look into his past transgressions, there are plenty.

1996: Sued for sexual harrassment, exchanged money for sexual favors with many different women. Settled out of court.
2009: Sued for refusing to rent out property to Hispanics and blacks, and to any families with kids. He settled out for 2.75m.
2010: Accused of heckling his own player, Baron Davis, during games. Allegedly called Davis a "***, the devil, crazy, and other profane names." NBA didn't do anything.
2011: Sued by former player and Clippers GM Elgin Baylor for racial discrimination and harrassment, won the lawsuit.
2014: Being sued by his wife for allowing his girlfriend to embezzle 2m from the team.
All of this while being an NBA owner, his peers have given the commissioner their blessing to vote him off the island. Finally.
Since you seemed to have not even read the first page.

Could there be any truth to the rumor that the ex-gf recorded the conversations in order to gain leverage in her own legal battle?

I think it's safe to say there are no heroes in this story.

The recordings were organized by Sterling, but its a pretty strong case that they were intentionally leaked by the woman to try to deflect the attention away from her. Its probably not going to work for her, but it worked for the Clippers and the NBA.

Off topic for the Sterling controversy, but on topic for NBA; watching OKC vs. Memphis and the 150-year-old referee Joey Crawford is officiating. Wonderful.

Well you can't blame the refs for Westbrook's lack of ability to play the Point correctly.

You could replace it with Eagles, Lions, Vikings, Jaguars, Texans, Bengals...if it makes you feel better. I would put the Eagles in there.

I believe the lifetime ban is fair, but if TMZ didn't pull their BS, he wouldn't have gotten the ban. But then again, who really cares what he says anyway?
It is what he does that should matter.

I see Westbrook had a triple double on 31 shot attempts and the thunder lost. Color me surprised. /sarcasm.

way i see it is it is his right to say what he wants so they can't go after him legally but if he is a FRANCHISE owner the league has every right to protect their brand if the contracts reflect such rights when he bought the team.
my only question is would the knife cut both ways....

I wonder if we compile a list of people who come out defending racist people, would we find a common trait among the vast majority of them?

if you look at the job he has (not) done running the Clippers, he has to be the worst owner of all time in any sport. Jeffrey Loria would like to have a say in this
Donald Sterling has been banned for life from NBA Games and any activity concerning his team, The Los Angeles Clippers, and fined $2.5 million after a phone conversation between Sterling and his then girlfriend was leaked, containing racially-charged rhetoric. Discuss.
