It might not seem apparent with "Omnys" but I put a lot of thought into character names. Omnys was supposed to be a deliberately skewed Ominous, and it succeeded because people thought it was Ahm-neez.

Loving paladin, my xiv character was named Conchobar (literary bearer of Ochain) and Pridwen, after king Arthur's shield.

So what about you? How did you choose names for ff and other games.

My original name was made out of arrogance, so I changed it to Kingnobody to be more humble. All of my character names comes from or derives from kingship.

I'm still a very arrogant mofo though. But I didn't want something forgettable like XXCloudVIIXX or something like that.

Sekundes is the time craymel from Tales of Destiny 2. I literally spent about 6 hours trying to find a good name that I liked that wasn't taken.

When I can't get that, which is rare as hell but it happens, I go for Sekuroon which is a mix up on my name with Qiqirn speak.

I like to use uncommon names, so I either try to invent them from scratch, or adopt unique character names from books I've read.

Squintik for example, was a character in "The Chronicles of the Kings Tramp" series of novels by Tom De Haven.

I went with Bloodrose as a semi-unique spin on Blackrose from the .hack series.

I went further with it in FFXIV as Bloodrose Wildreign.

Kojo was supposed to be Kujo, a masculine-ish nod to Kuja of FFIX.

Danii was named after...Dannii Minogue. (I Begin to Wonder was on the radio when I made her.)

Freya Rose was my XIV beta character that never made it due to PC Limitations. >.> Named after Freya and Roses, it was beta, not much thought put into it.

Anna Molly was my XIV ARR beta character, named after an Incubus song of the same name, pronounced 'anomaly.'

Anna Ruthven, I retained Anna from Anna Molly, but chose to take a surname instead of a song reference. I wanted a surname from either a historical or a fictional character from a horror story, it was down to Anna Bathory (from Elizabeth Bathory) or Anna Ruthven (from The Vampyre's Lord Ruthven)

(I had forgotten there was a Lord Ruthven mob in FFXI until someone brought it up in my ask the mod thread.)

EDIT: I hope Crotchbuffet responds to this thread...

I took "Ramirez" for my name from Highlander when I was about 13-14 playing a MUD (The Two Towers LP MUD, still up and running, though I quit playing a decade ago). I became very well known by that name after using it there and elsewhere. When I began XI I really felt the need to keep using it, but some Japanese player had "Ramirez" on Seraph, so I adjusted as necessary.

A bit on the lazy side and it reeks of shades of Xsephirothx and the like, but it was a name I had already been known by for almost a decade. I didn't want to leave it behind.

XI - Beginning: when I first started my name was Fyyvoaa ... the origin of the name ... if I remember correctly was from some name generator ... I couldn't really think of anything ... so I took the easy route

XI - post merge: after I transferred to remora and it merged with Leviathan (my origin server was bahamut but I transferred to have a fresh start) I changed my name to Catnipthief, the origin of that name was ... I played a mithra ... and I wanted something with a humorous name that fit with my character ... so I thought of that (with some help of a few friends of course :p)

XIV - Tyetus / Tyetus Rygar - I really don't know where or why I came up with that name, I just started using it on a few other games (cause it sounded neat) and I kind of stuck with it, the addition of the last name again was just something I thought of (or might have heard somewhere I don't know) I think I adapted it from a friends name that I saw that he was using at the time and I swapped it around to fit me (he had stopped using it by then)

Ahh. You're roughly in the same boat (aha!) that I am.

I live in the Pittsburgh region, parents in the Erie region and I'm up there at least two weekends a month in the summer on their boat.

I could go on, but it might seriously derail the thread.

Please just insert the entire Jim Gaffigan scene from Super Troopers [here] and consider it my contribution to this Meow-themed discussion.

Daisy was the name of my dog Id had since I was practically a toddler..I figured it'd be taken but luckily I misspelled it in the character creator. Accidentally typed "Daust" but it was hard to pronounce the 'T' so I removed it and "Daus" was created.

In 14 I tacked on "Cuboardlatch" after months of agonizing what to name myself. I had convinced my sister to name her character MoonMoon Cupboardlatch after 2 stupid internet memes but the last name was too long so we took out the P. I chose the last name just because we were related.

My name came from a Canadian singer named Aselin Debison who is from Nova Scotia:
http://aselindebison.com/

I didn't want a common oft-used name, or something that seems too plain or too obvious like Aerith or Tifa, that would be [ab]used way too often in games like these. I wanted to use the name of one of my favorite anime characters but apparently all of those were taken. I ended up choosing "Aselin" over anything else in the end.

I use a variation of this name for other games, and will often times use it in other MMOs.

When I first started playing I had BLM in mind, and that was my main job throughout the old game (75 era), so I wanted a name that had a damage-dealing feel to it, and Azrael means “angel of death,” but sadly the name was already taken, so a slight spelling change was implemented, and the rest is history…

Additionally, I completely forgot about the existence of that stupid cat from the Smurfs… damn that cat lol

I started making an alias when I was into the whole rave scene, one illegal activity lead to another and it just became a thing where I stayed up all night making sure my friends were safe. So I took on dawn.

Then some of my friends fell into serious trouble between gangs and whatnot so I needed a surname, I picked Dawn Joe as a play on John Doe. Blah blah dropped the whole toxic lifestyle and friends that came with it. I started getting more serious into XI when dancer was released and alas Dawn Charis was born into the XIV era!

Always loved Samurai even before I got into FF, at any rate lost my original character due to SE/Playonline ***. My friend gave me his 52 pld so I could at least do stuff."Camaroz" never liked the car or the name so when pretty much everybody I played with quit I had the chance after I moved and made a mule with same name. Thus Nitenichi "Hyōhō Niten Ichi-ryū is mainly known for the two-sword—katana and wakizashi—kenjutsu techniques Musashi called Niten Ichi (二天一, "two heavens as one") or Nitō Ichi (二刀一, "two swords as one").
