Why can't we go back to the tribal days of Africa where all the women were naked all of the time?
well, so were the men, but we can pass a law stating that all men shall wear clothes and recommend, but not enforce women to do the same. If anyone complains, we can always say that clothes are a bother and we are promoting womanhood
Because the evil clothing corporations would go out of business. They need to go out of business!
I mean, why charge $50 for a pair of pants when I can just wear undies for .50! That's 1/100th of the price and I'm still legally covered!

As a breastfeeding advocate I think respect needs to be better on both sides. That mom you see nursing is just trying to feed her child the way she feels is best (for the most part) but I also agree that attempting to cover at least most of your boob is respectful. Not all babies like being covered though and will scream bloody murder and flail thus making more of a spectacle (i.e. my twins). So, I think trying as best you can to cover up is excellent and if you can't well at least you tried.
I do think all of these things get blown out of proportion a lot of the time though. As long as everyone is being civil about it there's no reason to get all pissy on either side of the matter.

Very well aware. Over a year-and-a-half still make me a little squeemish. Not sure why. I don't know how some ladies make it without completely converting to the pump after the sweetones start cutting teeth.
Mehhh...I probably shouldn't comment though. I wasn't able to keep up with it after going back to work, and completely dropped off at a little after five months.
Yeah, don't think I will be breastfeeding after 6 months, if I'm able to do it that long.
However, the health benefits for the mom and baby are wonderful and each mom/couple have to make their own decisions on this topic.
Very true. Kind of envious of the ones who could actually devote the time to stay on their feeding schedule. I wish the US would adopt a six month maternity leave so that women could at least continue until the six month minimum recommendation. The stacked immunity makes it worthwhile, even if it is to the minimum.
Kind of chuckling about the noise complaints. Listening to a pump session might make you think twice.
EDIT: One gal I know made it to a year with both of her children, despite having a bout of mastitis with her first. Trooper!

I went there the other day and got kicked out for being over the age limit of 25!

So when I'm at the mall not looking at women breastfeeding. I'm feeling awkward for going into Abercrombie and Fitch and being the oldest person there.

The health benefits outweigh any creepy factor from some random guy seeing your nips in public.
Because women don't get stared at by creepy men at the beach, at the mall, jogging down the street, walking to their car, etc.
Also, I live in Denmark. Going to the beach means most women are topless in DK. While men definitely stare it is so very, very different on how human bodies are perceived here compared to the US.
Not sure if people reading this thread actually know what the health benefits are so here are some:
Baby:
better immune system
better brain development
higher social bonding abilities as an adult
less chance of developing diabetes 1
decreased rate of SIDS
decreased risk of infections
decreased risk of childhood obesity
increased bonding with mother/father and release of oxytocin
Mom:
Reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancer, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes
release of oxytocin and prolactin, helps decrease risk of postpartum depression and increase bonding with child
helps with weight loss

Coming from a mom of two kids, I've met plenty of women who are totally gung-ho about their right to breastfeed and will whip it out in public wherever and however, and it honestly kinda annoys the heck out of me. It's not gonna kill you or your kid to cover up a little.
Like anything, courtesy is a two-way street. Seeing it is gonna make a lot of people uncomfortable on different levels, and as long as you're not being an *** about it there's nothing wrong with that. There's always gonna be those type of people who go about things completely brazenly because it's their "right" :/
Aside from not wanting to make other people uncomfortable, it quite honestly made me uncomfortable if I had to feed my kids in public or around people (even around close family), so I made sure to always carry a little baby blanket. Maybe it's just me, I'm pretty modest and generally dress pretty modestly, but the thought of a bunch of random people seeing my boobs freaked me the hell out. "Natural" or not.
Sounds like some people kingnobody can get behind!! :p
I don't mind public breast feeding but I just think you should be discrete about it. When I hear people act like they are above being discrete I just want to find the nearest bust to them and relieve myself.

Every time I read a story like this, it's about some woman who's breastfeeding in a very public place and absolutely refuses to cover up (last story I read was about a woman who was breastfeeding in a pool.. yuck :<) and thinks they're doing nothing wrong and everyone around them should be ashamed. Again, maybe it's just my own modesty, but I still don't understand why you would purposly want someone to see that. What if there's some creepo/pedo/perv who's sitting there with saving up images for later. Yuckkkkkkkkk...
I've lived in cities where it's legal for women to be topless, and after years never seen a single woman exercising that right.
While I completely support breastfeeding and think as a society we could definitely learn to embrace it a little better.. with anything in life, people who have to act like it's "my way or the highway, so *** off" just annoy me. It's a shitty, rude and inconsiderate attitude to have.

Perhaps the better way to get people to embrace it would be to continue feeding openly so people get used to it and it becomes "normal". Kowtowing to prudes and the perpetually outraged doesn't really send that message.

I think we should do this with murder too. It's all well and good that you apply this logic to every thread on this site but sometimes there's a reason something isn't socially acceptable.
Before this gets turned around on me, I'm not saying that I'm against gay marriage/interracial-dating/insert-token-debate-here....
It's just this "point" has absolutely nothing to back it up. "If we ***in public eventually people will get used to it." "Only nagging prudish nay-sayers who constantly *** anyhow wouldn't approve of a woman chewing food and regurgitating it into her children's mouth in public."
"Because if you see it enough, you'll end up being desensitized to it" is not always a solution.

I'm not sure if I'd necessarily classify being uncomfortable around some random stranger who's breastfeeding without a cover as prudish. As a society, we're taught from a very young age to keep out privates private. And yes, while there's lots of sex and lack of clothing in advertisement, a good majority of the people that are uncomfortable seeing a strangers' breast while they're breastfeeding are gonna be uncomfortable seeing some girl (or guy) wearing a tiny bikini or tiny shorts with half their *** hanging out. (I know I personally am and would be).
I'd just likely to clarify, I think breastfeeding is normal. It's a great, healthy, natural thing we can do for our children, and the long time health benefits are inarguable. I also don't think that there's anything wrong with being uncomfortable. What's wrong is how people act based on those feelings.
There has to be some middle ground that's acceptable to (most) everyone. That's my problem. It's really not hard or harmful in the least to carry a little blanket around with you. It's not like you have to shove it on your baby's face and suffocate them. If done properly, it's pretty cozy and at a glance no one can even tell what you're doing. To go further, a lot of malls and other places have special breastfeeding rooms/areas. This is something (imo) that needs to be done a lot more... not really for the sake of getting the out of the public eye, but just because it's a lot nicer/healthier to have a safe/private/comfortable/ clean/quiet place to sit and nurse your child at.

Ummm...When you have a group of friends who all have children of various ages, men progressively become more desensitized to it, from what I've seen. Granted, the blanket is the unspoken courtesy, but it becomes par for the course when gathering for birthdays, barbecues, or just BSing around in the garage with neighbors who are close. No one is going to scream, "GO AWAY! You can't socialize!"
Kind of indicative of the level of maturity and experience of men. I can't think of many that would turn into pre-pubescent, giggle-pusses at around age thirty over a boob under a blanket, unless they're on FFXIAH.
Being terrified of the possibility of a slack-jawed gawker is kind of a sexist thought on a woman's part, no?
