Is there a table/listing somewhere of what the correct Aspect Ratio setting should be for particular resolutions? Thanks.

Yeah, I find the 16:9 and 16:10 ratio tends to be more personal preference then anything, I've been on displays where the one it's technically supposed to be looks goofy as hell...

eeeek! I've done 4:3 on a widescreen. Not so good looking. I gotta use SE's windowed mode w/ 16:9 to keep everything looking normal.

If you've been using 4:3 on a widescreen for a while, switching to 16:9/10 will look weird. But if you use it for a while you'll then you'll find that 4:3 makes everyone look super fat. I highly recommend you try it, as you get more on your screen too which helps for seeing mobs around you and such.

I already sent him a PM on this and the rest of you are idiots. It's simple math.

Divide your resolution and you get your aspect ratio.

1680 divided by 1050 = 1.6
1600 divided by 900 = 1.78
640 divided by 480 = 1.33

1.33, 1.25, 1.36 = 4:3
1.60 = 16:10
1.78 = 16:9
1.85 = 37:20
2.20 = 11:5
2.35 = 47:20

Dividing those aspect ratios give you the same numbers of course. This should help you with the most common resolutions. 4:3 is a weird one because there are several different versions probably due to the varying dimensions of pixels on older CRT screens. I'm not really sure.

This should cover most common aspect ratios. If you have something not listed, try dividing your resolution and doing a google search for that aspect ratio.

Aspect Ratio is just the definition of how wide something is compared to how tall it is. At 37:20 the screen is 1.85 times wider than it is tall. 1.85x20 = 37.

There's a slight discrepancy with the 1.78 aspect ratio because 16 divided by 9 is actually 1.7777777777777777777777777777778 and that number is rounded up. However, 1.7777777777777777777777777777778 x 9 = 16 and the aspect ratio is maintained.

If you have a list of aspect ratios in decimal format, and a list of aspect ratios in w:h format, you can just start dividing the numbers til you get a match for yours. I've done some googling and I can't find an actual chart to back up my post. All I see are aspect ratios listed as decimal or w:h format, but nothing that has both.

You can PM if you can't find it or need help.

Hope that helps, though. It covers the most common.

I actually only read Blazza's post. I figured since it was the last post it was the best attempt to help, otherwise why would he open his mouth?

I was wrong, he apparently didn't have anything to contribute. Bruser had a nice post, though.

I don't know, I haven't had an issue with playing 4:3 the 4 years + I have been playing this game. <.< *shrug* Things just look unrealistically small/thin...

If, before now, you've incorrectly tooled around with your resolution settings in teh registry to get higher resolution in-game then setting the aspect ratio in the in-game settings is going to eff up your graphics.

If you're using the Windower GUI launcher to set your settings you will want your 'Overlay Resolution' to match your screen resolution, ie. 1680x1050 and the 'Background' dimensions should each be a whole number multiple of your screen width, ie. 1680x1680, 3360x3360, etc. Basically the higher the background resolution, the better image you get due to oversampling, but blah blah blah, that's another topic.

Basically FFXI renders your screen as that 1680x1680 square, chops off the top and bottom according to the aspect ration, and scales the resulting image down to the 'Overlay Resolution' you've specified.
