Well, yes, but we can't all live in California. I mean, we could, if we built the place up to resemble downtown Tokyo, but CA imports a fair bit of food as it is and just imagine if half the US population tried to live there.

Also, it'd really *** up the Senate. The House would be fine, but small states already have disproportionate influence in the Senate, much less when 200 million people live in one single state.

I was just using CA as an example. My whole point was about moving to a state that matches your particular legal AND societal needs/wants.

Sorry, thought you were just helping with the former Governator's tourism campaign or something. My brother rattles on about how great CA is in spite of being miserable, so... yeah.

Nonetheless, I see no reason not to change one's current state to match one's needs. That's rather the whole point of state politics. I suppose leaving one state and joining another is an indirect way of doing that, though, rather like how emigration/immigration affects nations (I hate that we refer to our semi-autonomous provinces as states, I really do).

Sure is easy to tell people to go away if they think differently than you do.

Personally, I think my own ideas are the best there is and that they should never be challenged.

If the fed were smaller, stayed out of things not its business and was more realistic about the things it should be concerned with, federal operations should cost much less, thus much less tax and maybe some of that money could go back to the people, or at least to the states.

The fed collects the lion's share of taxes and thus decides what to do with the money. A better system, truly, would be for the states to collect taxes for both state and federal and tithe to federal IF they feel the fed is providing adequate service and fare representation. If a state didn't pay in, the fed would also owe the state no protections or services.

At the moment, the fed has the power and the money and states have nothing they can do about it. We are supposed to be fairly autonomous. For instance, Arkansas should be able to decide if marijuana is legal to A) grow, and B) Sell in Arkansas. The only place the fed would have in marijuana laws is interstate concerns. Right now, the only reason states like Co are doing what they're doing is because the fed is explicitly permitting and observing it as a sort of trial.

And then yeah, you have things like Arizona's immigration problems and feeling helpless because they don't feel that the fed is adequately enforcing it. Arizona wanted to assist in that and somehow, the fed finds they have the power say that Arizona can't even assist.

It would be like a city telling a mall they can't have security guards. A city probably could make such a declaration, but if the mall feels that the city police can't provide adequate immediate protection, and they want to assist, rather than solely complain, what's wrong with that?

.... All the time I read and hear reporting about The Drudge Report being biased reporting. I've been hitting it for a few months now, and as far as I can tell there is NO reporting. It's literally just links to news stories the majority of which seem to be from local CBS, the Guardian, and Politico on the liberal, a few from Breitbart on the conservative side, and then most others from countless other networks both lib or conservative.
He hasn't broken any news since he was Ken Starr's leaky boy, his site is an aggregator.

.... the majority of stories seem to be liberally biased, even a UCLA study
Mind = blown.

I must run this by my rabidly right wing friend (I have several but only one that I know who follows Drudge) (he is another bright Jew, we have some GREAT conversations) and see if he agrees.

Because that was the original purpose of the fed. We were to be something like the european union.

Quote:
We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union....
It's why state, in every other part of the world, is analogous to country.
Before Lincoln, and the civil war (I hate that phrase, no war is ever civil), it was referred to as "these United States". But Lincoln sought "a more perfect union" and so it became "Union". If you live in a town with a Union Street or Avenue check when it was named. I will bet 1850 - 1870.

Wyoming has an ACA health exchange?

And Mississippi HAS turned "Obamacare" down*, loosing MILLIONS of bucks. Hard to find a poorer or more needy state.

*The governor, the hospitals, and the doctors there were in favor of accepting all those bucks.

Besides, even within states there are often striking geographic boundaries separating groups of people who want nothing more than to tell the other groups what they should be doing:

'The secret campaign to rewrite the Constitution' I find that sentence interesting. Because there's no secret about it, the government is rewriting or ignoring the constitution on a daily basis, and has been for years. The scarey part is the ppl don't give a damn enough to stand up and stop them.

Congress is in touch with who matters: The wealthy donors who get them elected, have goals that need doing and thus own the country.

So many people grumble about the state of these ***candidates yet can't be assed to go to a poll and write in '*** this ***' in protest of ***candidates.

You guys don't seem to realize that it is neither rewriting the Constitution nor does Congress have anything to do with it.

Article V makes it so, in case of a Congress (or federal government in this case) with too much power, states can come in and slap Congress (or in this case, the federal government) down to size.

If there is a campaign to rewrite the Constitution, it is coming from the federal government side to reverse Article V.

I thought schools stopped teaching about the Constitution a long time ago. They replaced it with "diversity" and "tolerance".

You forgot abstinence.

I took Latin for a bit in college. I found out why it is hardly taught anymore. Latin textbooks contain many pieces of our constitutional heritage. Learning Latin makes you think. The two together are quite dangerous.

Latin also lets you understand legal jargon. "Res ipsa loquitor" sounds a lot less impressive when you know what it means. Maintain ignorance, though, and you can convince people that "homo sapiens sapiens" means all kinds of things and that "E pluribus unum" has interpretations to fit every conspiracy.

Ignorance is power. By which I mean, of course, the ignorance of the masses provides power to the oligarchs.

The ignorance of the masses is probably as dangerous to the oligarchy as the alternative. Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers.

Well, the real trick is to make it so that the masses don't know who the oligarchs are. If I wasn't a latent anarch, I'd probably try to inveigle my way into the ruling class. I probably can't afford the hazing fees, though.

Are we going for a repeat of the Roman Republics transition to an Empire? Will the Constitution make it to 2100? Is Alex Jones clinically insane? Why is Chris Matthews such a blowhard?
