Why should I have to tip them?! For some dry bread and horrible wine! What a rip off! Actually, I can't tell if you're joking or just totally misunderstood me. I never said that tipping is ridiculous. I said that needing a freakin guide to know how to do it properly is ridiculous.
There are far simpler systems at play in other countries. Namely, just pay people in the service industry fairly. In San Francisco, there's a little fee on every bill ($1 iirc) that goes towards covering service industry health care. This is an example of a non-suck way of giving service industry workers more money. No guessing, no ambiguity. It's right there on the bill and you even feel kind of good about it.

So my girl works at petsmart as a groomer. She started at minimum wadge and is tipped regularly. We just started and ended a conversation about this. Overall we really didnt know the laws behind being a tipped worker, so through the power of google we figured it out.
Even if tipped wadge workers dont make enough in their tips, the employer has to make up the difference so the worker gets paid at least minimum wadge. This makes me question why the system even exists. Workers should get paid their rate and that should be it. Either way they will make the minimum or more because of tips. Its on the customer to pay for their meal/service plus a tip? Seems a little off to me.

I tip 15% for service that I like. 10% for so-so service and 0% for service that I hate. There's no right or wrong about it since tipping is as old as the money system.
In the olden days, people would tip inn keepers for better than standard services like a warmer room or quiet room. Even in China or other non-tipping countries, you can tip if you want to but you need to pass that tip into something like "Thank you for your troubles. I'm so happy with your services that I believe you deserve more" rather than "it's obligatory".
Tipping is not paying for a service. It's a reward for people being very professional with their services or just doing more than they should be. That means tipping can be subjected to impressions and personal tastes and preferences. However, people keep tipping and thinking it's an obligation until the ones getting tipped were making so much money that Mr.Tax-man have to pay attention.
While it's never wrong not tipping people because of what they are rather than their services, it will make you look like a jackass.

Being professional doesn't mean you work harder. You just need to meet the minimum standard of service. Generally, it is set by the manager. It's a lot like professional soldiers working at the bare minimum that is expected of them and their Sargent will make sure they do so. They might get medals or a promotion for doing more than the minimum or just by simply not falling into the sub-standard layer.

Next time you buy a TV or a game at walmart make sure you tip the cashier. The TV you just bought is cheaper because walmart chooses to underpay their employees. So with the same "etiquette" don't be a cheap *** and help that cashier make a better living since walmart don't. I used to work in a store where they explicitly forbade us from taking tips when providing service to a customer (e.g., helping them load their car, which was not anyone's job). I'm sure some of our tipping etiquette nonsense is a direct result of the taxman, given that was the reason why I allegedly couldn't take a buck from an old lady when I helped her out. I certainly cannot imagine that my employer had any reason to dissuade its employees from getting a little extra.
Then again, if they didn't forbid it, maybe people would do crazy things like being particularly helpful in hopes of getting a few extra dollars by the end of the day. This was back in the 90s, so a few bucks actually still bought something.

You ask what your date wants but only you address the waiter. Aren't you a gay male? If my date/boyfriend were preventing me from saying my order, even if he were paying and even taking into account a submissive streak that may or may not exist, he'd need to worry about being screamed at. Or me leaving immediately. Boy did my ex learn that the hard way, though admittedly after we had already broken up.

Its on the customer to pay for their meal/service plus a tip? Seems a little off to me. This is how many telemarketing firms work, too. They guarantee a minimum hourly wage but if your commission from scamming people equals a higher rate, that's what you get instead. On the flip side, people who consistently get paid the minimum also tend to get fired. I suppose that means it does the job it is meant to do, but the world probably needs fewer telemarketers than waiters.
Though, for a lot of restaurants, it'd probably be just as easy to put a soda fountain or simple bar in place and let customers deal with that themselves, which would eliminate a remarkable amount of server hassle. There are several rather nice but low cost casual Asian restaurants in my area that do exactly this and it never causes a problem that I've seen. Go figure, they've been the places I eat out most in spite of not being a particularly big fan of Chinese food.

It also has nothing to do with whose paying it's to make ordering easier with just one person ordering the food for a table versus the waiter moving around taking individual orders. It's kinda like a disignated official for the table.
Edit: also you don't prevent them from saying there order.
E.g. ill have the ribeye medium-rare with a shiraz, and she'll be having the fried chicken, pork chops, ribs... Oh and she wants a diet coke too!

Who orders a drink at the same time as the meal outside of a fast food restaurant? Every place I've been in does the drink order immediately after seating which gives a couple minutes for people to peruse the menu.
Maybe I'm just weird on the order thing, though. When going through a drive-thru with friends, especially since we almost all carry cards in lieu of cash, I will sometimes jump out of the car and go inside to avoid the headache of payment and confusion. I guess I'm a bit of a control freak, but it only extends to my own person. Is there a name for that?

Wines are typically ordered with entrees since they are paired with food sometimes. Also the whole wine temperature etc...
E.g. You might have cognac to start off but would like a nice chianti with that steak.

My girl would probably be upset with me if I ordered for her. With that said, I always let the girl order first and I usually go last.

So what you're saying is that the guy hitting on you wasn't attractive enough for your minimum wage standards.
My looks put me solidly in cougar territory and it shows whenever I'm in a store or restaurant where a woman in her 40s works. I don't feel the need to be a jerk while they call me "honey," even though there's literally no way I could be interested.

Always take strange people's numbers and respond to their notes. That is how love and divorce happen.

Democrats are historically the worst tippers. And they will use any excuse in the book, including the stupid line f thinking that there should be no tipping. If you think that way, you are just cheap.

I wouldn't be surprised if the waitress wrote it herself to get sympathy (and those donations).
If it is proven that she did it herself, then she should be held for fraud, but we all know she wouldn't.

Because we have been rewarding these "pity me" stories recently.
What is to say that she didn't do it herself just to get her "pity me" story and those "donations" that comes with it.
I could, as soon as I get back, start working for a restaurant as a waiter, and for the first person who stiffs me on a tip (probably wouldn't take that long) write racist terms all over it, post it on facebook, decry racist things, get fired, act all hurt, get these donations (even set up the donation website myself as an "anonymous" donor) and watch the money roll in. It wouldn't even be hard at all.
Personally, I wouldn't put it past anyone nowadays.

I'm actually inclined to ask why you would believe the waitress over the accused customer without letting him speak his side of the story first.

So you're reasoning is purely emotional then? It's more that you'd rather believe something, that might not be true, because you're tired of "pity me" stories? lol...
Do all of these "pity me" stories always end up in positions where they received thousands of dollars in donations? I mean she was suspended from her job because she posted that receipt online so she was taking a risk as well...
I'm actually inclined to ask why you would believe the waitress over the accused customer without letting him speak his side of the story first. You're not inclined to as you actually did ask lol... cmon man...
Personally I don't really believe either one of them yet... All I did was ask you a question and you assumed I took the other side...
