This thread astounds me. I thought it was going to veer off into another gay marriage discussion. Totally didn't see this coming.

Something tells me you just don't like feeling you "should" do something.

You're right, I don't like feeling like I "should" be responsible for paying a businesses employees wages if the form of gratuity.

If they told you that you "must," would you feel better?

rewording a sentence to make the same statement...

The way I see it, that nuance is your argument. You're happy to pay higher food cost in exchange for higher wage for employees. How magnanimous of you!

And what's more?! You feel so strongly that you would prefer EVERYONE around you to adopt the same preference inorder to accomodate your feelings.

One would think that you'd be better off with "should" and tipping since you get to choose whether or not to pay the would be "wage."

Never underestimate the power of feelings!

Again with your assumption I think these people are beneath me. Where you get this idea is beyond me...

My reluctance to "gratuity" lies in the fact that I shouldn't be obligated to pay someone "extra" for a job they are already paid to do.

Paying a plumber an extra $10 for making sure your pipes don't leak. Tipping a hair stylist because they provide good skill or conversation. Paying a server extra for not smelling like a skunk and bringing my food to me without dropping it, while smiling and saying thank you. This is their job!!

If you decide not to tip based on poor service, that is your decision. But to not tip then include a snarky line on the receipt (like in the OP) that has nothing to do with the service as an excuse, you are an ***.

I also feel that for those people who don't believe in tipping period, please inform your waiter/waitress when they take your order that you do not tip. There should be no issue, and it lets them know not to waste any additional time on you.

A world without bonuses, cost-of-living increases, performance-based pay, or a raise that doesn't accompany new responsibilities!

What a wonderful world indeed!

Guess what eating with your mouth closed isn't required but it does make for good etiquette same with tipping.

At the same time don't get upset if someone labels you tacky or cheap.

My only gripe with tipping is how poorly defined the standards are for it for various services (dinner, someone carries your luggage, a cab driver, piano movers, pizza delivery ($15 pizza vs $100 worth?), ordering take-out, room service, etc). I get asked by my foreign friends about this all the time and it's pretty damn poorly defined.

I would rather just not have tipping at all and have fair wages built into the pay of service providers, like some other countries. Takes the stress out of it for everyone.

I tried to tip for a meal in Japan one time and the waitress came running after me to give me my money back, thinking I had accidentally left it there.

Next time you buy a TV or a game at walmart make sure you tip the cashier. The TV you just bought is cheaper because walmart chooses to underpay their employees. So with the same "etiquette" don't be a cheap *** and help that cashier make a better living since walmart don't.

It's simply different upbringing. Some people get nailed with etiquette harder than others.

Opening doors for elderly or females, learning how to spit out food properly, tipping, it's etiquette.

I have a bad habit of ordering for the table or myself and my date, because I was taught the man orders for himself and his date. You ask what your date wants but only you address the waiter.

Sure, but don't you think that's a bit ridiculous? :P I mean, why does it have to be so damn complicated?

Side note: I bet there's an Android app for this with the guidelines recommended. If not, I want a % of your revenue if you make it!

You know what's ridiculous?! Me having to "tip" the church!!!

Why should I have to tip them?! For some dry bread and horrible wine! What a rip off!

btw, that page doesn't include how much you should tip outdoor guides. My gf and I went on a sea kayak-camping trip in Alaska earlier this summer and due to grizzlies, whales, waves, sea lions, calving icebergs, tides stealin' or boats, etc, we decided it might be foolish to go without a guide. So we sucked it up and spent ~$2000 for the whole sheblammy through a reputable company. It was a painful price but we were thinking, "well, it's just once a year, we'll have fun."

So about halfway through the trip, somehow the conversation of tips came up and we learned (from another tourist) that they normally get tipped 20% on top of the cost of the trip. $400 tip, ugh. Not advertised on the website anywhere and we certainly didn't expect it since it was already pretty damn expensive.

Anyway, this is just another story of why tipping inconsistency sucks balls.

I generally just tip 20% whenever I know some service is expecting a tip to avoid feeling like an ***. But the system is just stupid. The only person I won't tip are those dudes who chill in bathrooms and try to give me a mint and a towel to dry my hands off with, that's the dumbest thing ever. I just pretend they don't exist and grab my own towel.

And so we reach the chewy center of nonsense. I don't really doubt you actually think that after the tiping the cashier comment and all I believe you deserved is to be called afucking moron.

If calling people names over the internet makes you feel smarter by all means spit away. In the end your a comment on an internet forum, and probably and total *** in real life!
