Can anyone recommend a laptop for FFXIV?
By Ophannus 2013-09-09 13:26:58
I bought my current laptop in 2011 for ~$600 it's an HP Pavillion dual core 2.2 and it plays FFXI fairly well but it can't play FFXIV really at all(get Decent even at he lowest settings). Are there any laptops under $1,000 that can play FFXIV in above average settings? I don't know how to build computers, it doesn't have to score 10,000+ on the benchmark but just enough to play it without a huge amount of lag but still look pretty good. Any ideas?

Sorry, no recommendations, but I'd say prepare to pay out the ***, you'll probably want to have a custom gaming laptop built. There used to be a website, cyberpowerpc, that you basically pick what you want and they build it for you, but this was years ago. Good luck on your search, but you might try looking there.

Is the one im using now. It has I7 quad core cpu and lowest tier graphics card (you could only pick two). I regret not getting the highest. At the time, I paid 950 for it custom from dell. 750 hdd. everything else on it is irrelevant imo.
The game works well on laptop high setting 30 fps. On standard its 50-60. My girl has a dual core I5 with only on board graphics and it played the game "ok". She paid 550-600 for hers and it has a 1tb hdd.
Ideally, you could use that money yo build a rig that would score higher. IMO, that would be your best bet. Customization for the future if you get more money. And the self gratification you get every time you turn it on that you built it yourself. Its worth learning how to put one together. gl!!

That would play it perfectly fine. maybe not max settings, but it will play it on decent settings. they lowered the graphical visuals a lot from 1.0 so it's easier on hardware.

From working at a computer store and seeing what comes in to our service department, I can safely say, do not buy an HP laptop lol.

might be a good option if you really don't want to splurge the extra cash for this beast for price machine http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834312834
Granted, I'm not even sure if FFXIV has SLI support atm, but they mentioned it would be coming.
I would second http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834231238 but fuuccccckkkk any kind of keyboard that isn't full sized

honestly can't recommend the envy line, mine has had nothing but heat problems, and so have many others.
I do like my Asus a good bit though.
Dell suck, and by extension Alienware.
cyberpower is a joke...
Sager makes good customs ones but are expensive.

"SLI and CrossFire Support
SLI for NVIDIA graphics cards is now supported. Please use NVIDIA drivers 320.49 WHQL or later when using SLI"
SLI is a go!
also, the only real issues with Windows 8 are PEBKACs -- besides. 8.1 is amazing and looks great.

Way to make it painfully obvious that you haven't used Windows 8 for more than 30 seconds, if that.

I picked up one of these recently. I am extremely pleased with it and I think for the price the hardware is very powerful. I've played a bit of FF14 on it and it runs really smoothly so far.

Alienware used to be the end-all in gaming laptops, they've really gone downhill since Dell bought them from what I've heard.
My current laptop and desktop are Asus and I can't say enough good things about them.
FFXIV is really all about your GPU, anyway. Get a good name brand laptop with a solid GPU and you're golden.

My brother uses Alienware 17" laptop to play FFXIV and it runs fine.
Dell products may suck, but this may not a problem if you're willing to get their premium warranty.
Don't know if it is the same with USA, but with the UK premium warranty they do next day on site fixes. And since they are all contractors, they don't care what's wrong with your machine and will just replace the parts with new (well, most of the time refurbished) ones. Playing a demanding game on laptop can stress it a lot, and I can't say whether any machine will be fail free for a long time.
My last laptop was a dell - the motherboard died 3 times out of a duration of 4 years but they fixed it next day on site all 3 times. My current laptop is a Asus, dual boxing ffxi seems to have cooked it up too much and it's now very faulty - though it still somewhat works (only use it for youtube now...). I didn't bother getting it fixed because the idea of sending my laptop out and getting it back in 6 weeks isn't very tempting. (and I've had water damage on it so they prolly blame that and refuse to fix - dell on the other hand, they would never have checked before they send out the engineer, and the engineer is a contractor so they would never care) My asus is about 2 years old and the plastic and aluminium plating are all breaking apart as well.
Imo majority of laptop makers suck. I'm going back to dell next time because at least I can pay a small fee and guarantee 3 years of next day onsite fixes. But this is only my opinion and is likely to be controversial :P
But in general, if you're going to play on a laptop, what you need is not only a good GPU but also a laptop with a good cooling system (usually that means a big laptop, 17" or above). Overheating is probably going to be your main problem playing a game like FF14 on a laptop.

Aleinware is owned by dell, and they have slowly been going down. Asus who use to make the parts for Alienware do have the issue of overheating even with their ROG series, but it is usually luck of the draw on the one you get if it going to overheat. I just got MSI GT70 laptop, and have been able to dual box 11 and run 14 at the sametime without any lag.

Alienware sell on clever marketing, they are overpriced and bad value for money. That's not to say they are not up to the job though but you could get more for your money elsewhere.

I don't see the point in buying overpriced junk then covering it by paying them more money for a ***warranty.
Any laptop with a lot of power will probably have an issue with heat, just the nature of the game with small places and a lot of power.
