I guess obviously, the moral thing to do was NOT to drop the bomb, but if you think about all the damage Japan could have done had the US not dropped the bomb, I bet there would have been more casualties, more destruction, more bad stuffs. Do you think they would've hesitated to drop the bomb if they were in our shoes? I mean it was a war, there WILL me death, there WILL be sacrifices, there WILL be tough decisions. blahblahblah

That all falls into what I know to be logically true.

I just can't stand knowing that I'm forced into admitting that yes, the U.S. killed civilians, and those civilians HAD to die.

This may sound silly, but, this:

When I acknowledged that I would stick with my intentions of becoming a novelist to the end I swore to myself that I would never write something that I didn't hold true. I could just be all "Yeah, America!"

I know that the right thing was to use the bombs, and I'm going to write that. It just feels so wrong to do. I dunno, it's odd.

If it means anything, Americans retroactively agonize about the morality of the bomb far more than Japanese do.

Not trying to imply whether it was moral or not, either way. That's up to your individual determination.

Just sayin', most Japanese (including the official memorials at Hiroshima and Nagasaki) take a stance of generic opposition rather than finger-pointing. That is, "let's all work together to make sure this never happens again." Beyond that, the subject rarely comes up.

Yet it seems to be a popular topic here in the states, especially every time August 6th rolls around.

Hey Jaerik, this is sort of topical though unrelated to Sectum's issue, but do you know what the public perception to nuclear power is like in Japan as opposed to the US? It seems like it's completely off the table of energy efficiency here because of the fear of another Chernobyl, yet as far as I know it's a very large part of Japan's energy source.

Sorry that it's totally random, asking had something to do with a current thread on BG about Norway building the world's largest wind turbine.

edit: I shouldn't say "completely off the table", but more it seems the idea of being green and efficient tries to find ways around nuclear energy when it seems like a really sensible option.

Meh, it's just a generic term paper. My polisci teacher is a veteran who wants to cheap out of teaching, admitted himself, so all we do is watch West Wing and 24, and he gives us papers to show his boss how smrt we are.

They get about a third of their total energy from nuclear power. It's considered an important strategic move, as otherwise Japan has no natural energy resources of its own and needs to import all its fuel. (The US-led oil embargo of Japan was part of what triggered the attack on Pearl Harbor.) Oddly, it's the US -- the only ones to ever deploy a nuclear bomb in war -- that's the most afraid of nuclear energy.

That being said, an unfortunate string of accidents and safety breaches (including one pretty major government coverup involving a sodium fire at the Monju reactor) in the 90's and early 00's shook public confidence pretty severely. But not enough to stop nuclear power as a primary energy source long-term, I don't think.

That's very interesting, thanks. Do you know what the circumstances were like when they began using nuclear power? A particular party coming into power and just going through with it regardless of the current public opinion or what?

Public opinion was never really against it. They went to nuclear power less than a decade after the war. Again, it's mostly the US public that, ironically, has the most reservations against it.

As far as parties, Japan has been a one-party system since shortly after WW2, controlled by the Liberal Democratic Party. Which, due to that neat quirk where political organizations like to name themselves the opposite of what they actually are (think the German Socialist Party or the Democratic People's Republic of Korea), were conservatives.

Last year, they got mass-kicked out of power for the first time in ~60 years. The public blamed conservative economic policy for the global economic crisis, and had also turned strongly against the LDP's support of US foreign policy. (Particularly the war on terror.) The government is now overwhelmingly controlled by the Democratic Party of Japan, who are left-wing.
