It happened again today. "Computer is having a melt down!" - actual words spoken to me, with zero explanation. Diagnosis: Num lock wasn't turned on.

That happens in my office with Scroll Lock a lot, because it causes our main work software to go apeshit for reasons I'm still not entirely clear on. But inevitably someone freaks out -- sometimes to near tears -- because things aren't working right.

Never any actual description of what happened. Ever. Btw, the message that pops up is usually something along the lines of "This doesn't match this" meaning you just need to change what it's telling you. But let's not read it, let's just go running for help and panicking. Edit: They don't even use the phone to call my office because they can't be bothered to remember my extension... I started playing stupid years ago when it comes to the computers. I'm still bitter I let anyone know I know how to fix a lot of their problems because I still get phone calls when they should be calling the tech people instead. -.-

Num lock I feel is within the extreme basics. Same with vehicles, you should at least know how to check your oil and tire pressure, as well as change a flat tire IMO. Takes only a few minutes to learn.

(partially untrue, I do know the admin codes and menu navigation, but that's all about setup not fixing it) and they look at me like a deer in headlights. So I go out there, unplug the machine for a few seconds, plug it in and imagine that, it works again! But their solution is to put a piece of paper over the machine with "Do not use" written on it.
