Yeah, this was how I knew I was old, and one of the reasons I get annoyed with FFXIV. Everyone wants you to watch six videos before trying anything. Hell is watching other people play video games. I'll grant an exception for eSports, in much the same way physical sports get an exception; you're watching the best in the world go head to head. Watching random dudes/dudettes streaming is just getting excited about watching rec league games at the Y.
