As for what to eat when your pregnant... ***... every time I hear people harp on about this stuff I just laugh to myself and wonder how any woman gave birth before knowing all this ***... then I think about all the things medical professionals tell you is bad then later on tell you its not bad and then later on sometimes even tell you that its actually good!
It's just so ridiculous.

We didn't even want grandparents around right away, but we're both sort of hermitty in general. I get how for some people it's a bigger sort of family event and they'd want people there (or want to be there and don't consider the other side). Part of the problem is that the hospital bombards you with people (for us, anyway) - nursing coach, photographer*, the pediatrician, etc.
* = I'd like to think I can keep my cool in most situations, but photographers showing up in our hospital room, taking a bunch of pictures and then hitting sleep-deprived, not-sure-this-isn't-a-dream new parents with some outrageously priced packages, hoping to capitalize on your overwhelming and unbalanced emotions, was infuriating. I made it pretty clear we were not interested. The wife still claims it's the angriest she's ever seen me. That stuff is predatory.

Yeah...I frequently wonder how much is actually necessary and how much is "Well, just in case, stick to fruit [but only some kinds!], bread [unbleached whole grain!], and water [filtered!]!" I can understand taking a pic of the baby, one or two quick pics on a cellphone but...and this is going to sound odd from me, think about it from the mother's point of view; you're sore, you're tired, you probably aren't looking your best then some person comes in all like "Smile!" Yeah, no. Let the mother rest and just heal.
EDIT: To put it into one word, I'd think it'd be uncomfortable.

Although it was a nice picture. And she invited everyone but me to the whole thing. Pretty sure even Nik and Rooks got an invite. Then for her son's first birthday, she hired another photographer and had the birthday party at a water park.

We actually have a bunch of pictures from that first day that I took myself (some on the phone, some on a real camera). Pictures are great! Ambushing emotionally compromised people with predatory, byzantine picture packages is not.

But you've had the honest to goodness key lime pie, so I think you're within your right to be a key lime purist. I have never heard of a photographer hanging around the hospital either. That has to be bizarre. Since our hospital is a Catholic network, we had a nun come a kockin' and blessed our family. That was interesting, seeing as though neither of us are very religious. We weren't aware that that would occur, not that we were offended.

Here's some advice for you guys... LEAVE THEM THE HELL ALONE WHEN THEY'RE HAVING A KID UNLESS THEY SPECIFICALLY ASK YOU TO BE THERE!
The baby will be around and you will have your chance to see the little ***... until then let the parent relax and adapt to their new life. Having to deal with all you yuppies wanting to put your hands all over their new treasure is mostly annoying and unwelcome. come back again when you've been called.
