I'm kind of glad that it's come down to the wire, and Martin wasn't able to produce. I think that the conclusion might be better left as a surprise for everyone.

I gave up on the books (granted, I've never liked the fantasy genera for my own reading pleasure since I was twelve or thirteen), since there were so many complaints about how distanced the series had become from the books. I think maybe it would be better to enjoy them as separate entities?
The annoyance probably stems from the fact that the only reason it is made into a series/movie is due to the popularity of the books. So when you depart from it, you've probably already alienated the people who *were* going to watch your show.

If the intent behind the change is to make it more sellable to a broader audience, that is what we would call pandering. Or to satisfy/get a sponsor.

a couple weeks, tried to get windows 8, could not find it in stores so ordered from Walmart and had it set for store shipping and pickup.
It arrived to the store, went to pick it up, went home and installed it.

get an email this morning....

Bolded your answer.

See if they'll send you a refund too. They probably will if you whine loud enough.

So am I to believe that she's well adjusted, doesn't put herself in needless personal danger, and is desperately poor, yet happily living with the love of their life rather than being chased by dozens of beautiful women who he'd rather ignore to fight crime in one of the worst ways possible?

(I really like Batman, but let's be honest. Once you strip away the childhood fantasy, he's a pretty *** up dude.)

If I'm miffed by something in the TV series, I just Wiki the broadstrokes about a characters literary storyline for whatever consolation I need.

Meh.

EDIT: Still pissed off by lady Wildling chieftess's "Hi and bye!" from last episode. I'm guessing she was just TV fodder anyway.

They're not as far apart as people keep claiming. They highlight certain characters who don't play a big role in the books because they are popular. They give some characters' stories to main characters because it's impractical or highly confusing to introduce dozens of secondary characters every season. They have also messed with the pacing a bit, since some characters' stories advance more slowly or not at all in some books.

All in all, the really annoying book purists are basically crying that it's impractical to actually produce a book series for TV, not that HBO is straying too far from the books. Even GRRM has said, even if there are differences, they should be viewed as just another person telling the same story in the same world. Even the history inside the novels is said to be suspect.

Also, hi all.

Well, of course it's "pandering" in some sense. Apparently, they've cut out or improvised content to hurry the story along for the TV audience, I suppose, but now we're left with loose ends and substories that could have been explored a little more and would give the author more time.

IDK. I'm with Zero and Mosin about Bran's story and I wish they expanded the "North of the Wall" song and dance (since they're taking liberties anyway).

I'm not a producer or a director, so...

It does bug me a bit what they've chosen to leave out, especially when we get these Sam scenes. And some of the characters they've dropped were the ones I was most looking forward to, sadly.

I love the Dresden books, and I really loved the series too. AND the series had the blessing of the author to take his source material and run with it to make it more appropriate to serial television.

The failings of that series were not the production, nor the acting, nor the scripts/writing. It was its presentation (or lack thereof) by its network.

That or television viewers suck big floppy donkey ***.

The later might be the most true, because some real ***manages to stick around for decades.

To quote George Carlin only slightly out of context, "This is the best we can do, folks."

If the show wasn't linked to the novels, it would have been a show I probably would have enjoyed quite a bit. Or if I had never read the series.

But given how iconic (and hammered home) the characteristics of some of the components of the books were fairly arbitrarily (or in some cases, not so arbitrarily) changed (e.g. the Blue Beetle, Murphy, geekiness), it left a bad taste which was hard to overcome.

I guess. Was giving Murph dark hair really that bad, though?

And I thought making the BB an old Jeep worked just fine, honestly. It wasn't the (not) Blue Beetle, but it was an old WWII-era vehicle that met the requirements needed of this vehicle.

And while I enjoyed Bob in the books plenty, I loved the Bob in the series. He was really great for the role. And Paul Blackthorne was a spot-on Dresden. Truly. It was one of the best pieces of writing-to-screen casting I've ever seen, imo.

Sorry, "stepping down".

Whatever. I don't really get the level of drama anyhow over an internet forum. People want to be *** just perma-ban them.

Just my opinion, but.

Oh, oh, oh!

The guy they got to play Morgan may have also been essentially the complete opposite of the guy from the books short of a gender change, but I still really liked him, too.

Edit: Honestly Mil, this is one I'm going to fight you on until we both fall over. My anger-over-cancelled-series on the subject of The Dresden Files is eclipsed only by the sainted Firefly.

Because everyone in there is like me or worse, just with different viewpoints and varying degrees of articulation.

We all work in likely socially-contracted workplaces where we do our best not to rustle anyone's jimmies and then we get into an anonymous internet situation with other like-minded people in most ways (geeks) and then we all go to town finding each others' differences and arguing ad Nausi-'emnauseam about them, and tempers flair, so no one backs down and it inevitably boils down to character assassination.

1. If the law is on your side, argue the law.

2. If the law isn't on your side but facts are, argue the facts.

3a*. If neither is on your side, assassinate the opposition's character.

(*3b. Claim opposition is arguing "feels", not "calm, cool, collected, manly logic.)
