I don't think "engaged with the social aspects" means anything beyond being visible and contributing to discussions.
A big part of proper moderation is context, which is not the same as playing favorites. As an example, this morning I removed an image that had some profanity in it. Obviously against the rules, but the poster has no history of troublemaking, the image was basically on-topic (and amusing), and it wasn't part of some grander plot. So I removed it, sent him a PM explaining the whys and whos, and left it at that. I'm not going to put someone in cuffs for jaywalking.
Anyway, it's hard to maintain context if you're not actively involved in things, even just reading. If, in the process of that, I have something worthwhile to add, why wouldn't I?
