A Fistful of Dollars is one of the greatest westerns ever, it's a remake of Yojimbo, which is also an excellent film.
The Thing is a remake of a 1951 movie of the same name, and is one of John Carpenter's classics. And all due respect to The Duke, the recent True Grit remake was outstanding. (The Dude is better for the role than The Duke. Who knew?!) Edit: Oh, I guess I can contribute to the actual trend, too: The Italian Job.
