It's sad that most High School kids can't get minimum wage jobs anymore.
Actually, minimum wage benefits them more than anyone else.
But thats a long explanation I don't care to get into xD

Yeah...I understand why it does, but I can't help but feel bad that they're missing out on experience now.
Thanks Obama?

First Job, Toy R Us, as a Toyologist. I played with toys for a week to help entice sales.

Second, Hollywood Videos. Fun.

Big lesson learned while at Toys R Us, never work Retail during Black Friday. O.O Ever since I have made it a mission almost every year to be awesome shopper on that day. If I had the money.

Sorry to disagree with you Zah, but I feel like this process is sort of eliminating the whole teenage experience. At their age, kids should be worried about puppy love romances and how many bones they want to break before they graduate. We have to do enough worrying about jobs and careers at our age, but I feel we should let teenagers be teenagers.

Unfortunately at this day and age, the public would tend to agree with this sentiment and demand that students have portfolios ready and vocational experience before they even go to prom. I just wish we could let kids be kids.

Since when is having a part time job or job in general not part of being a teenager? I mean unless you expect parents to fund the trips you want to take over the summer or going out with your friends on the weekend and other such ventures...

My first job was for my grandpa laying in floor heat in a hanger @ the airport. for 7$ an hour. waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyy too much work so I said *** that , and started waiting tables at the base of mount rushmore for 2.25$ an hour. that was a ton of fun though.

the little town is called keystone and it's just a tourist trap at the base of mt. rushmore that milks all it can.

one of my best friends at the time & I went to that silly little town looking for work, and because my buddy was black, every place we went was all "aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh we're not hiring" then we'd hear about some chick from our HS getting a job there the next weekend. such craziness. well the last resturant we tried this old man comes out of the kitchen on request of the hostess, & says "looking for work, huh?" he then proceeded to look us both up & down 2-3 times, like he was sizing up livestock, & says "you look like good boys. I need a waiter and a host, you two can flip a quarter, idc which does which." he then changed his look to more of a glare and said "I only have 2 rules, no playing grabass, & no playing with knives, I'll see you boys monday."

this guy ended up being one of the funniest dudes I have ever met. if I have time or something else jogs my memory, I'll regale you with some tales of "the railhead family resturant"

almost all we did was play grabass, and there was a cool strip magnet to hold the knives, so we always threw them as wildly as possible. we worked there for like 3-4 summers, it was fantastic.

If it's a job at Subway or whatever to gain some extra cash, that of course isn't an issue. It's just the way she worded it as having "experience" reminded me of doing something like an internship, and to me it just seemed like those individuals who spend more time worrying about a future career than just trying to have fun. Maybe I was the only one who saw that connection.

I can understand that outlook, and I agree with it too in some aspect. I wasn't only talking about the experience gained for a resume of piddly-***jobs, but there is a lot of fun and fun lessons that come with work experience before shuttling off to university. These jobs in HS just equate to gas money and shopping anyway. Basically, just more money to play while learning. Balance in all things.

Oh boy! 'Bama as a singular state can put us all to shame, Uri. They should move Alabama up North. How about we stick Alabama in Canada and see what the Canadians will do!?!

OK I can't help it.

so the old timer from the kitchen was Jerry. he owned the place, his wife was the hostess/frontofhouse manager. He was a grizzled old marine who fought in the korean war, & had no problem telling you all about it. I would share cigarettes with some of the little hoochies that worked with us, & jerry would yell "NO CHRIS, NO!!!!! that's how you get trenchmouth!!!!" that one raised an eyebrow. there was a crazy ex-firefighter than was in his 70's and would just wonder around town getting all pervy with the young girls. well it was one of those deals where nepotism & "aww he's just old" let him get away with all kinds of non-sense. well jerry wasn't afraid to call a spade a spade(is that saying racist?) & when the old man when come into our resturant, right in front of the customers & all jerry would start yelling "GET THAT OLD PERVERTED *** OUT OF MY RESTURANT!!!" and the other dude would just start laughing this wierd high pitched laugh & retort "O jerry, I missed ya buddy" .... which would only further anger Jerry, & he'd get to yelling louder, at this time all the tourists are listening intently, kids, the whole nine yards. Jerry: "I'M NOT YOUR BUDDY YOU GOOFY OLD SON OF A ***, GO PANHANDLE FOR FOOD SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!" all with a smoke hanging from his mouth in full chef regalia. so fantastic. this would go on for 10 mins or so, with the old time wierdo just laughing at jerry the whole time.

While waiting, there was always that ONE *** a week that would take the pep out of my step. Some people I just wanted to throttle, but had to maintain that zippity-doo-dah attitude. That comes in handy a lot. Grin and grit your teeth.

I was a server and hostess interchangeably in college before seeking internships and clerical jobs.

Trenchmouth is really bad gingivitis. It happens to a lot of soldiers. It's hard to remember to brush your teeth every day when people are trying to kill you.

It's not contagious but a lot of vets believed it was and could be caught from sharing cigarettes or cups or canteens.

<the more you know rainbow.jpg>

Edit: A lot of soldiers don't have those "luxuries" like toothpaste and razors. My son's scout group collected toiletries for the soldiers in Iraq and Afganastan and everyone we talked too was surprised they didn't have those things.

Sav and Zah, back in the 90s, my company (before I worked here) was in charge of making a stage for Pope John paul II for his visit and speech/mass/thing at Camden Field (Baltimore's Baseball place). It was made sectional, to be assembled and disassembled within 12 hours, carted into the field, and have a anti-balistic drop down area. We have pictures of it on our office wall.
