That's why I love Nabokov so much. He purposefully wrote Lolita trying to imagine the most offensive topic imaginable. To this day people still don't understand. I had a classmate who read the same book and publicly announced to the class that she thought the book was a waste of time and she hated it, etc. And I realized that's the point. If you're worried about what it has to say and find it offensive, that's just Nabokov trolling you. He loved this attention, because he always felt that his work like all literature is a work of art, and simply that. Don't try to think of it didactically, he didn't mean it to be as such. He wasn't an advocate for pedophilia. He wrote it because it was just as much art to him as say looking at the Mona Lisa. And if people get offended, they don't get the point.
What if they get the point and are offended anyways?
Well, they don't have to read it. Y'know, unless their grade depended on it.
Well just kinda making the point that you said "And if people get offended, they don't get the point" as if it were an absolute... and when I questioned that you replied "Well, they don't have to read it. Y'know, unless their grade depended on it" which to me takes away from your previous statement... which I believed to be false anyways...

When I said that, yes it wasn't absolute. I'm allowed to admit that it wasn't 100% true. In those cases it is the point. However, if you understand it and you still don't like it, knowing full well that he didn't actually write it to offend you and yet you take offense anyway, then that's your prerogative. Again, you're allowed to analyze it your own way. So far I haven't heard a case where this is true, but it doesn't mean that it hasn't ever. So yes, strike me as wrong in the record books.

this all kind of reminds me of when that world famous violinist went down into the subways of new york and started to play on his strat for tips as a kind of expiriment or what not... no one paid him much attention or knew who he was or even seem struck by the beauty of the music... While others pay hundreds of dollars and dress up just to go see him play... Not everyone understands or appreciates things the same way nor do they hold the same importance or significance...

Ahh it was DC... that's my bad... Kinda trippy that they both played on the same instrument... thanks for the article!

I've seen many people take offense to what's been said to them or what they read or see etc. even after they've been told it's not meant to offend... whether you intend to offend someone or not... Even when the person understands its not meant to be offensive... it doesn't mean that people still won't be offended...

I guess my point is that it's easy to force our own perspective onto others but that it's foolish to think that others will share and practice that same persoective...

Edit: by force I don't mean to make try and make them adopt it or anything but rather perceive that they will act according to the way we actually perceive things... in this case your persective is that if one understnds that it was not meant to be offensive they will not be offended... in many cases that may be true but in many others it will also not be true... so it would be foolish to act under the presumption that all people would not be offended even if they do understand that it was not meant to be that way...

Offense is a tricky thing. Someone out there is going to take offense to pretty much anything. I was watching a documentary last night called Hecklers where Jamie Kennedy was talking about critics and hecklers tearing apart people's work. And they mentioned offending people in there, and that in one way or another someone's going to get offended by something they say or do. It's hard to go anywhere these days and say anything without someone getting upset about it. And I'm just as guilty as anyone. If I hear anything racist or demeaning towards a group of people who don't deserve it, I get riled up. This is why I'll admit to being wrong. Offense is a tricky subject, though.

Idk... I just figure people don't like having negative things being said about them or things they care about in general... Sometimes it's due to a misunderstanding or someone actually just being direct with you... People just handle things differently though... it's not all that hard to offend some people...

I've been called an ***... I understand that I very much am at times... the one way you can look at it is that it's a fact you look at it and you move on or you can look at it as someone is calling you an offensive name and get all up in arms about it... pretty easy to go to the latter even if the former is the truth...

Why, thank you. I've honestly never been, but all I hear is how boring it is. lol Glad you enjoyed it. Now I just need to stick with it instead of letting it die like I do with most of the stuff I write.

I enjoyed it. There were pop culture references, I knew it was talking about MW2. I liked the writing style. I like where the story is going, maybe.

Most of the stuff about Nebraska it true :( Lincoln has like 250k people and Omaha has 400k
Thanks, man. I'm trying out something different with the narration. Usually I do third person omniscient, but I thought I'd mix it up and get a very personal look at this character. In fact, that's the whole point of this story. The plot actually won't make much of a difference, and could very well fall flat. I'm hoping the narration will pick up most of the slack.

The narration makes me feel interested in the person telling the story. He's random, he's someone I can relate to, and he cuts out the details of unnecessary things. I don't know what you're doing with the whole Captain Awesome thing, but I think it's a cool idea to take the perspective of a regular guy while there is superhero stuff happening around him and he just seems apathetic to it.
It seems more like disdain than apathy towards the actions or even simply the existence of the superhero's/villians...

Disdain would be cool too. Maybe he could grow up to be a villain when the story ends.
If the very beginning was a precursor to what ends up happening I'd highly doubt that outcome... besides that... to me it comes off as he has equal amounts of disdain for both the heros and the villains... Though it does seem like there's a hint of jealousy... I'd be interested to see how the character develops.. mostly because I don't see this character having some kind of epiphany or anything or changing who he is so I'm kind of curious as to what about him develops... right now he seems kind of like a douche... he talks down about pretty much everybody and then also comments (on how he assumes) that the hero's/villains think they're better than him or something... he talks about a dead end job where he's struggling to make ends meet with rent and college tuition yet comments later that the money is good...

Money being good is relative though. Compared to similar jobs, the pay may be a bit better.
