Dame, what is this nonsense I hear about you not having read Harry Potter?

The world of Potter is an entire fantasy setting right alongside normal modern society, while at the same time perfectly secret from society, which is awesome in itself and adds an underlying thrill of tension, like "Oh no! What if the muggles find out!" throughout the entire series.

On top of that, the characters are believable, normal people. There are no genius bikini supermodels with superpowers and convenient mutations. The only bonus these kids have is that they can learn magic. But they do have to learn it, spending most of every year at a special school. And even then, there are strengths and weaknesses. For example, if you need anything blown to smithereens, get your grubby paws on Seamus instead of Ginny and so on.

FURTHERMORE! Every single book is a mystery of who is causing problems, how, and how to stop it. Every minute detail is important-- in book 1 we know exactly who Nicholas Flamel is right early, but only in passing. It's not until nearly the end of the book that we learn how important it was to remember that name! Every detail woven into a tapestry of importance! That made no sense, but whatever.

It's a classic good vs. evil story with great characters. You even sorta like the bad guys. The setting is beautifully imagined, the conflicts are gripping, the mastery of detail and foreshadowing is, uh, masterful, and anyways

I can't believe you! Dame, I am so disappoint!

Dirty muggle king. >.>
I come back from lunch to this!

Listen I'm all for magic and fantasy and mystery, but there is something lacking.

Knights, ninjas, and samurai.

I read the first four books but then I graduated high school and stopped reading books all together. I'd rather play video games than read books. I watched all the movies though.

I appreciate your kind words, Mag. I didn't really like doing the whole dialog thing but it made it easier for me to portray without sounding repetitive with "said, Erik". I made sure I was doing the symbols so that they reflected what type of chat they were talking in (party chat, PM, or say). I tried to make popular culture references in each part. It started as a gimmick at first but it was more of little easter eggs for certain people. But I think that took away from the serious parts of the story. That's just my personality I think, when things start getting too serious things kind of fall apart and feels lackluster. I like to make jokes to break the tension.
The dialogue actually worked in your favor, and particularly because this is the type of story where people get to interact, by removing Erik's voice, you're able to have your reader take his place. Much like Link in Zelda, Erik's muteness actually works to your advantage. That and it felt like I was actually playing ffxi there for a while. I've taken that exact path before, and that's pretty much how it feels going from sandy beach to a cool field, etc.

Funny how women have that power. I'm ashamed to say that I've seen Sex in the City 2. But I guess it's okay because I demand the same of my ladies. They either have to have seen The Big Lebowski, or I will make them watch it so that they can love it.

I never understood the hub-bub in highschool. The series wasn't good at all. How they made two movies out of 'Sex and the City' is totally beyond me!

I loved 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' in those days. Suse Essman and Larry David crack me up!

Knights, ninjas, and samurai.

Personally I like it.
My opinion is heavily biased since I grew up reading the books. But from a literature point of view I still give great respect to the growth and development of the characters over the course of seven years and the ability write modernized fantasy.

If you want more practice in the mean time, you can critique the Chronicles of Spence.

I also will not write in that format again :P

Stories without endings bother me... especially stories that don't even set you up to creat your own or hypothesize about what happens next...
