Okay, fast food works but it feels awkwarder.
Cashiers are supposed to be friendly. They're supposed to say Hello at least, or something. So next time you go buy something, instead of just saying "Hello" back, force yourself to say "Hi, how are you?"
And then when you leave make sure to say "It was nice to meet you. Have a nice day".
Make a conscious effort doing this for 2 weeks and watch what happens. The first few times it gave me massive anxiety, then I really started to enjoy talking a bit more.
