It really all depends... Is what he asked you to do something that he can't assign to anyone else? How important are the newly assigned tasks? How long will it take to complete? Does it have to be done today or can it be spread out? Any other significant information?

I am salaried. I usually arrive in my office at 6am and get off around 5pm. Sometimes later. I am also on call, and get called a lot, to make emergency inspections in the middle of the night, only getting every other weekend off. We don't have scheduled lunch breaks, I usually bring mine and eat on the go. (Salad, pasta salad, sandwich or something.

Also, the newly assigned tasks are important, but can be handled by any one of the 10 union employees that work out of our office.

No, I don't get paid extra for being on call, but they pay enough. I think my biggest problem is I have worked on other territories. The problem is my boss is lazy and has the organizational skills of a 2 year old. He is computer illiterate, so I also get to do all that work for him. I love my job, but hate my current supervisor. I have put in for a transfer on multiple occasions, but keep being told I am where they need me at the moment.

I'm really just pissed off and venting, I'll be better tomorrow...

Salaried employees just have a set income. Doesn't really mean they pay you a lot of money to always be around... rather, hey you're getting paid this much this year and hours are whatever. Could be more or less than 8 a day.

Edit: there is also exempt and non-exempt salaried employees. If you don't make above a certain amount and you are a salaried employee they can only make you work your 40 hour weeks for your salary. If you work more than that then they have to pay you overtime. I think the amount varies by state but keeps employers from keeping salary low and working employees too long. but if you make over a certain amount then they don't care lol.

It has its pros and cons. Security is a big pro. If I were to get sick/injured, my full salary would be paid for 6 months and 80% for an additional 2 years. I also have great insurance, railroad retirement and stock options matched up to 7% of my income. So, its a great job, just a bad supervisor.

his job is delegate work to the people under him. he obviously thinks you can get it done. just keep putting in for the transfer or get promoted over him. when it comes to work place problems, the best solution is usually to just do your job exceptionally well. the people who suck at their job will eventually get fired, demoted, or put under your charge. if it's worth it you'll stay around til it gets better. sorry it sucks.

so i stick by my, i'd probably give you more work. take it as a compliment.

I've never been on salary so the concept is interesting to me.
I used to work at a job where I was hourly, but I kept getting in trouble for massive amounts of overtime. The overtime I worked was required due to a large project that had a deadline and I was brought in at the tail end and had to clean house. They decided to make me salary, giving me a good size bump. What I failed to realize is that I made quite a bit more being hourly because of the overtime, then I did as a salaried employee even with the nice size bump.

I am salaried at my current position, but one of the huge benefits is flexibility. I don't have to be at work at a certain time and as long as I work 5 hours, I get paid for the whole day without having to take PTO. We rarely work overtime unless we are on deadline and running behind (I pay people, so its kind of important that I submit the payroll file on time and correctly). Basically once a month, there is a chance that I have to work late, but even then it rarely happens.

I don't really mind extra work when I have time to do it. The problem is ensuring that I get the job required by federal law done. I am subject to some pretty hefty personal fines for deviating from my schedule.

I say stick with the federal schedules and if you have time, work on the stuff your supervisor sent you. If he ***, then take it to his boss.

At least you have ***to do at your work!

I have nothing to do. Not one thing. I mean I could go through archives AGAIN but it'd be a bit pointless.

The janitor doesn't clean out files and whatnot, just the building itself :)

Well I know my supervisor is on salary but I'm hourly. She's here pretty much 40 hours and I think she works on Sundays sometimes. But usually she strolls into work maybe 15 mins after the hour every day. But with our new clock system you have to clock in exactly on the dot if you're hourly. If you have 1 min overtime, they yell at you. I don't have the ability to adjust my time and although my supervisor submits the payroll file, she rarely adjusts it.
We have the 7 minute rule for hourly employees, but I still think it's bogus. Who cares what time my *** shows up to work, as long as I get my work done and I work my 8 hours. I can understand if its a call center or something where you have to have people available all hours, so the schedules must be kept pretty tight, but other than that, totally not necessary.

When I worked in the market I was hourly and there was still the freedom to come in at 8 one day and 9 the next. As long as I clocked 8 hours, I was good to go.

My rage was at least dampened since the text came from my friend and he wrote it as a poem. Was quite clever.
