Starting a job with 20 inventory spaces. How do you manage your inventory?
By Felgarr 2013-07-06 17:54:43
Honestly. My inventory is killing me.
I want to level an endgame job that performs well with only 1 set of Armor. That's 16 pieces. (I will accept say, up to 4 additional pieces for swapping, so say 20 pieces total).
Any thoughts or ideas? Is this even possible? I already have MNK/BST/PLD/WAR/NIN/WHM/SMN leveled. Can any job be a good candidate for endgame with 20 inventory spaces?
Edit: Let's not make wild assumptions about my commitment level to a job based on this post. I'm merely asking about starting a job with 20 inventory spaces. A few people mentioned some related jobs based on what I have already leveled and how new jobs overlap with gear they already have. Someone also mentioned to use GearCollector. Thanks EVERYONE!
Edit#2: I'm only restricting to 4 gear swaps right now for the sake of argument. A number of people have pointed out that I'm hurting my reputation, but asking this but if that's the case, I won't even pose the argument. Thanks to everyone who posted comments about how they manage their inventory and gear swaps for multiple jobs.
Thanks!

I'm just trying to find out if there's any job that can perform well without every piece having to be swapped. I'm up to my ears in macros, Windower macros, Spellcast, and all of the different places my items wind up (Mog House, Satchel, Sack, Storage, etc...)
Instead of criticizing me, could you possibly explain how you manage all of your inventory?

Easy. I store what I don't use/need, or play the least.

What's taking up so much space in your inventory? Do you have all of your gobbiebags? Is your Mog Safe at its maximum capacity? Mog Locker? Do you have a security token for the additional Mog Satchel?
You're not going to find much that's going to work without swaps, but you can work to lessen the impact that carrying multiple gear sets has on your inventory space after making sure you have the maximum inventory space available. Also be sure to take advantage of the Porter Moogle if you find yourself with storage issues.
MNK and NIN are frequently on pieces of equipment together, and you can choose swap gear that may not be as optimal as possible but is still effective to allow you to function better at both jobs. They share several PDT pieces, for instance (Arhat's, Thurandaut Boots, Twilight Torque, etc) and both have uses for various pieces from some of the new Adoulin armor sets (Thurandaut Chapeau for Shijin/Shun, Manibozho Brais for TP, etc). Of course, they're both also on Usukane and a number of other pieces that are useful.
Your best bet, if you're set on leveling something new, would be to choose a job that can make use of swap gear that you already have. You already have WAR leveled, so you might look at one of the other heavy DDs (DRK might have the most overlap with WAR, but I'm only vaguely familiar with both classes).

Please let's not criticize. Can you explain to me how many sets you have your jobs? How many jobs woth of invetory do you keep in your Mog Sack/Satchel/Items/etc?
I keep 3 jobs worth of armor in my 80/80 items. (This allows me to go to "Change Jobs" in MH and already be geared, for my 3 most played jobs).

BRD COR SMN and THF can also get away with it, but I wouldn't expect many invites if you go this route. Or at least you shouldn't be expecting endgame invites if you're considering a max of 4 item swaps for a job. Even just asking the question probably killed your reputation a little bit, to be honest.
That being said, you should consider looking into the GearCollector plugin for windower, which will make inventory issues a bit more manageable. Feel free to PM me or message me in game if you want help or a template.
Or retire/consolidate gear from your less used jobs.
tl;dr: don't be a gimp pls

The real question is what would you need to marginally add to cover the new job. If you have your other jobs geared appropriately, you have lots of options.

Don't carry gear you won't need for that event, like evasion to delve. Don't carry small situational upgrades. If you list out your inventory, it would be a lot easier to dissect it and choose what to take out.

I have roughly 5-6 jobs that I can play between at any given time for various reasons. The best bet, as already stated, is to find gear that is interchangeable with other jobs of the same type.
MNK/SAM/NIN/PUP all on Usukane +1, MNK/NIN/PUP on Manibozho Gear, BST/WAR/PLD can share a substantial amount of gear between them as well.
You should also probably list which 3 jobs you're using the most, so people can actually give you the help you need, otherwise be prepared for a critique-fest of your peers. Keep in mind that Criticism is also one of the best tools used for teaching others, and for learning.

Thanks for posting something constructive. :) I have all inventory space accessible and will be putting a lot of seals, +2's and other mule-able items today.
How do you guys organize your gear for your most played jobs? Just keep them in Mog Sack and change jobs, so you're already geared and ready to go?
Thanks

Safe: Weapons/Ammo/Cards
Storage: Brd/Blm armor, instruments
Locker: All other armor
Satchel: Accessories
Sack: Slips and food and junk
If you can store it on a slip, do that. I can fit 10ish jobs with this system. None are perfectly geared or anything, but it works.
I try to keep it so that if needed, my inventory can be completely emptied when I need to change job. It might take a bit longer than keeping the gear on me at all times, but it's more organized and I'm unlikely to ever forget anything. Sort of rare to ever need to change job and not having 4-5 minutes to do so.
For your actual question: Only if you build an emp harp.
I don't think you, or anyone, should do this, but it is completely possible to function in "endgame" with just one gear set and the harp. It's the only job I can really see being invited under these conditions. Again, you shouldn't, don't crap up a job, but it's possible.

Put away your jobs when you are done playing them. May take 10-15 min to gear it up when you decide to use it again, but at least you can play a job efficiantly w/o to much of a issue. Most jobs I play along with others, depending on the job and circumstances. Will carry an average of at least 3sets and up to 8sets. Leaving us at 78/80 trying to pack rat a job so you can gear it on the fly is not possible if you play many jobs with pride.

Yeah like others said: GearCollector is a very good tool. It will get your gear in around 50-70 seconds what would normally take 5-20 minutes (depending on your organization).
As for the exact question though:
Impossibilities (imo): RDM, THF, WAR, MNK, DRK, BST, SAM, NIN, DRG, BLU, PUP, COR, DNC, SCH, RUN
Possibilities (imo): WHM, BLM(with max delve staff), PLD, BRD(with gjallarhorn), SMN, RNG, GEO
Reasons:
Impossibilities: require a TP set and a WS set as well as a PDT/DT set (sometimes MDT too to be safe). COR and RUN a lot of swap gear between their physical and magical properties. Mages because they're expected to be able to nuke/heal/enfeeble.
Possibilities:
WHM could get away with a max cure potency set with some conserve mp/enmity/hmp pieces.
BLM could get away with a standard nuking set and hmp/macc pieces.
PLD could get away with a max pdt/dt/mdt set with a couple swaps (would only be holding mobs in this case).
BRD songs are pretty much all capped with base skill so just need AF3 and cast reduction with some solid pdt/dt swaps.
SMN could get away with a max skill set with pet MAB.
RNG could get away with shooting in WS gear swapping in some rapidfire pieces.
GEO right now just needs a good idle set really with a few solid cure potency pieces.
I definitely do not recommend playing without gear swaps though as performance increases dramatically with proper swaps. Limiting yourself to a certain number of gear pieces is just needlessly gimping yourself. Definitely suggest taking a look to see which items you can live without to sell and checking some old sentimental pieces (RA/EX NM drops and the like) to see if you can dbox it to a mule. Moogle storage slips also help immensely. There's also the trick of sending yourself an item, checking your dbox and clicking "return to sender" to make it go in a neverending loop (caution: while the amount of things you can send to yourself is limitless, you will only get gil from AH sales if you have under 100 items backlogged).

Honestly, I'd rather someone who took 15 minutes to change jobs but gets the most out of their accessible inventory, than someone who is quick to change but only has 20 pieces of relevant gear. There is no job that is ideally played with only that much gear, only some jobs that are easier to get away with because there isn't much that lends to their immediate role (GEO, COR, THF, BRD). I wouldn't touch anything else with only 20 slots of inventory, and I'd dis-include THF and COR if you intend to deal damage.
If you need more inventory, use Porter Slips. I store literally everything possible apart from THF and WHM gear so that I can fit all my jobs without having to mule.

My most-played jobs are MNK, THF, and NIN (well, mostly MNK and THF these days, but I still consider NIN my main so I keep the gear close by). I keep the gear for whichever job I'm playing in my inventory and the gear for the other two in my Mog Sack. Gear for somewhat frequently played jobs (BLU and a low-level SAM at the moment) are in my Mog Safe. Everything else is at the Porter Moogle, if I have gear for it at all.
Mog Satchel contains most consumables as well as stuff related to item upgrades (seals, +2 items, airlixirs, etc). My storage is mostly old sentimental/event gear that I hang on to because I have the space, and my Mog Locker holds all crafting mats (and currently, Bonanza Marbles).
For awhile, I kept my three main jobs in my inventory like you currently do, but as I accumulated more and more gear for swaps, it got to the point where I just couldn't anymore.
As it is, though, I usually have 25-30 inventory spaces free on any given job. I could keep more on me, but I find it helpful to just keep that space open--it makes switching to one of the Sack jobs faster since I don't have to juggle gear as much.

BRD, and get a ghorn/harp, which is 16 slots. You can use the rest of the slots for cure(main/body), refresh(legs/hands/feet) and -song casting time(main/body) and a couple pdt pieces(terra's staff/neck/dark rings).
Fill the rest of the slots to further optimize your job.

I have 13 jobs and they're fully functional. Meaning, give me 10 minutes and I can be ready to go.
WAR, BST, WHM, BLM, RDM, SCH, SMN, BLU, THF, NIN, GEO, DNC and COR
Mog Safe:
- Furnishing: Panettiere, 2 Stalls and 1 Sign. Pannetiere + Stall caps your Storage.
- Here I keep light armor jobs NIN, DNC, THF and COR. Mainly pieces on slips are Empyrean +2 and Relic+2 augmented. TP, WS, EVA set for these jobs.
- DNC I don't carry specific gear like cure waltz potency. It benefits from THFs Evasion/TP/WS gear.
Storage:
- Random things I can't send to my mule: Glory Crown, Unfinished empyreans, unlit lanterns, linkshell, etc.
- Here I keep heavy armor jobs: WAR and BST. WS, TP, Pet sets etc. All Empyrean+2 and Relic+2 pieces stored on Moogle. Considering putting Phorcys gear on moogle too to open up more spaces.
Mog Locker:
- Mage storage: SCH, WHM, BLM, GEO, SMN and RDM go here.
- RDM is the only job fully stored in over 6 slips since it never sees the light of day. RDM DD set is stored on mule.
- SCH is the only job that I keep full time.
- WHM, BLM and SMN empyreans+2/relics+2 on moogle.
- GEO is a mix of every other gear + some other gear I keep on Sack.
Satchel:
- Consumable items: Food, Remedies, Echo Drops, Prism Powder etc go here
- Slips
- Ninja Tools and Ammo
- Exp Rings, Retrace Staves, NPC Pearls, Chocobo Whistle, Nexus Cape
- Fishing Equipment & Bait
- Craft Equipment
Sack:
- Where I keep my BLU gear. Empyrean+2, Relic, AF, all stored.
- It's the invetory all jobs get gear from.
- Thaumas set goes here since its used by both BLU and Light armor jobs.
- PDT and MDT set stay here since every job benefits from them.
As you can see it's not the "perfectly organized" thing everyone does but it works for me. I even carry more stuff than I should, like a carnation stack for when I have to use flower warp. And BLU have some random gear that it's only used for certains spells that I should get rid of: like Cure Potency Gear.

I have everyjob but RUN, PLD, DRK, SAM, RDM, DNC, fully geared, started storing everything I can on Moogle coz inventory issues... but still have some jobs ready to go(MNK, RNG, WHM, BRD, BST, PUP, SMN, COR, NIN), and for those who takes 20 mins "gearing" itemizer is a good plugin, it just takes me ~5-8 mins to gear any job.
MogSafe have WHM, BLM, BRD

Ex. of my mnk Itemizer txt. TP, Shijin Set, Victory Set, Asuran Set, Chakra set, pdt set, eva set, counter set, acc set, 100's fist set.

Then I used the porter moogle.
Then I leveled blu.
Woe is me.
In all seriousness though, porter moogles are your friend. I'm a little inept at using gear collector (I have it installed, just never played with it because anytime I attempted to my brain hurts), but yeah.
I can't tell you what to level, but I can only suggest what NOT to level.
Don't level SCH. My inventory is mostly sets for SCH. Roughly 8 sets of gear, and I'm not even finished with a few sets, and haven't started on one yet.

To the OP if you keep 3 jobs worth of inventory you're probably asking for inventory problems, what you could do is like someone else posted utilize Satchel and sack to separate them from your on hand inventory.
Another thing you could do is get rid of junk you will never use like all those trophy items you want to hold onto for no reason other than sentimental reasons.
And finally, keep all your crafting items on a mule try to utilize your delivery box also you can send yourself a max of 16 items that are uselessly clogging up your inventory.
PS a side note you could always just choose 1 job and stick with it.
Honestly. My inventory is killing me.
