And the latest GOP stupidity on abortion:

Texas abortion ban: No exception for rape

Choice paragraph:

Quote:
State Rep. Jodie Laubenberg, a Republican and chief sponsor of the bill, told colleagues: “In the emergency room, they have what’s called rape kits, where a woman can get cleaned out.”

Thereby proving that the GOP does believe in sexual equality. In stupid rape and abortion comments at least.

An abortion ban with no exceptions is logically consistent at least :| Horribly oppressive, yes, but congruent with the idea that the embryo is equivalent to a developed human being.

... so there's that.

Maybe it should be mandatory for Congress to take a sex ed course or any science course before sitting in office.

Did you know sperm can live inside a womans body for up to five days?

But hey, getting scrapped for a DNA test must get all 100 million+ sperm that came from a single ejaculation.

Thanks for reminding me how much I hate my newest home's stance on abortion. You should have seen the first two billboards I saw when I crossed the border into this state. :(

That's much too advanced. Some of them may still believe in homunculus theory.

This concerns me more than Reps not understanding basic biology

Quote:

The proposal would ban abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy, require doctors to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals and limit abortions to surgical centers. Other states have passed similar bills, but few have the full set. Federal judges have thrown out the restrictions in some states.

...

Supporters say the bill would improve women's healthcare. Opponents warn it would shut down 37 out of 42 abortion clinics in the state, leaving wide swaths of Texas without access.

I find it ironic that conservative republicans support such abortion policies forcing women/families(specifically those who are not financially stable) to yield children.

Then they *** about assistance programs that these women/families need to adequately raise a child.

I agree. But since they have no basic understanding of the human body they think they can legislate this through abstinence programs rather than sex-ed.

I do find it funny that for the longest time TX had "chicken ranches" ("Best little whorehouse in Texas") throughout the state but they expect people (read women) not to have sex.

"Friend of the fetus 'till the day that it is born"

I think I first heard that phrase in the late 1960s. Nothing new.

This "irony" appeals to the Jon Stewart/Cartoon Network crowd, sure, but the bigger picture is personal responsibility. Why is it too much to ask that people take responsibility for their actions? Besides, in America, if you find a starving kid, you will find a parent who is spending the money on an addiction.

I always thought this was just an Ireland fail. Here a rape victim made pregnant has their right to leave the country revoked (abortion is completely illegal here. On paper there is a loophole, but its unheard of) so they cant get it aborted in another country. We preach "catholic country!" whenever it suits is,*** joke of a country.

I think they expect a certain amount of personal responsibilty... like past having the first kid you would think they know that having sex yields this result and if you can't support the first one why have more? Also, where are the parents in the question to give their kids some sex-ed? I kinda wonder to myself... I don't think anyone really ever wants an abortion so why would they go about the same action leading to the same conclusion? I'm sure there are exceptions out there but yea...

Hilariously enough my only sex ed course was in the 5th grade and the instructor was a catholic preist lol...

Quantity. You're most likely to be fertile if your ejaculate — the semen discharged in a single ejaculation — contains more than 15 million sperm per milliliter.

Average fertile sperm is a little under 100 million. Under 20 million is considered to have fertility problems.

I don't see any clear distinction along party lines other than the fact that Republicans prefer to classify far too many things as "science" and "fact" that have no actual Science or Fact in them.

Both sides tend to warp and trim things down to a factoid loosely based on actual fact and present it as truth.

Everyone is entitled to thier own opinion but nobody is entitled to their own facts.

Personal responisiblity is probably the biggest point of contention in the whole debate, whether a fetus is a person on a week to week basis is nothing but a distraction to the real issues. Plenty of circumstances warrant a different approach to the issue of unwanted pregenancy.

There is far too little objectively analyzed data and far too much religion in the debate as well.

I still don't understand the need for legislation in regards to a woman's right to an elective medical procedure. I do find it very suspicious that the same groups trying to promote abstinence education and banish sex education are the ones lobbying for outlawing abortion.

Life is good when you can wrap your ideology in the catch phrase "personal responsibility" and rub it in other people's face.

How about another take on those words. You don't raise a kid unless you have the means and desires to properly provide for them.

At the end of the day, those words are simply a gimmick, thought up by some political think tank, preached by politicians and regurgitated by their sheep. It's how they make their money and keep you in line.

Oh yes! Because there is no such thing as a single parent or a parent who refuses/unable to pay child support. Also when it comes to genetic syndromes/conditions, consequently edit: such legislature would force a mother to carry to full term- what's your excuse then?

So I guess a newborn born to an addict should take personal responsibility and go out and get a job to provide for itself?

I agree there are a vast number of factors outside of the concept of personal responsibility, but you have to agree there are far too many uninformed or unprepared people having children without the means to take care of them. I can't speak for those people, but from the outside it seems as though that thought had never crossed thier minds.

My wife and I have waited to have children because we don't feel emotionally or financially prepared. We both grew up with limitted means and have worked very hard to get to a point of relative financial security. We don't want our kids to ever have to question why we get food from the foodbank or why a charity brings us Christmas gifts.

The difference is that I don't presume to control someone else's right to have or not have children.
