Basically, someone who can be trusted to play smart when things go bad, rather than running around like a headless chicken or freezing like a deer in the headlights. Anyone can gear decently and play their job (cure, smash things, sing, etc.) - it's people who take decisive action in a pinch that make all the difference. This is what I'd call a good player, but not quite a "Veteran".
The term itself is relative. As someone noted above an old returning player may not be a Veteran for certain events while they are in others.
Ultimately, <Veteran> is a blanket term for a "good player" in most cases.
True! My answer was a little simplistic, and probably too kind. If you haven't done a certain event a few times, you just won't/can't have the necessary intuition and (probably) the gear to contribute in any real way to the alliance. And if your gear completely sucks, it doesn't matter how good/intuitive you are. It's definitely up to each alliance leader to make those calls. But there's no point getting mad at an alli leader for not choosing you. They probably had 10-20 tells to sift through to fill 2 spots. If you didn't seem like the best option, you didn't get picked, end of story. Oh I've had several tells like that..

Full pearle might make things difficult but I would argue a player who showed up in full pearle did not know much about their job as there are easy to get alternatives for most slots. My main point is that you can show up in all the maxed out delve gear you want to wear but if you don't know how to play your job you are so much dead weight.
It was an example, you could argue af3+2 grade in place and still have the same outcome. Please address the point, not the example.

I dunno!
NNI is pretty pathetic now
I think you'd need to be braindead to fail there was some guy that hexa boxxed on here; I wonder if he got to floor 100 alone yet
My housemate duo'd NNI with a 3-box and 2-box to sell ***, wasn't that hard.
That said, Sylow, you can't really be compared to a regular casual...so ofc NNI is braindead to you, but that isn't the case for everyone.
With the combination of the nerf to mob levels and Delve weaponry (which casual players can get pretty easily) things die in like 2 hits
I was 2boxing SCH and COR (I didn't even do anything or move on COR) and someone else was 2boxing BRD!
Its the misc things that make nni a pain; lamps, bosses, etc, that need to be on-point to secure a win.

-Adequate gear (not necessarily perfect equips, just as the word suggests)
-Knowledge of your enemy (important)
This is one of the big things to being a veteran, in my opinion. For old enemies, you will have recognized each and every one of their moves, what they do, when they do it, ready to counter it before they've even used it. Exploiting weaknesses you've discovered through experience.
For new enemies, adept players will be able to quickly analyse an enemies moves to what they do (easy, of course), and how to quickly counter it for the next time (Example: Fossilizing Breath = Petrify, stona asap) They will also be able to quickly discover gimmicks to the battle and/or special conditions that activates mobs certain abilities (Example: Flail-type moves, absorbing certain damage type after certain attack, etc.) Will also be able to find and exploit weaknesses fairly quickly with their experience of existing weaknesses, family-type weaknesses and the like.
-Job Role
This should be fairly obvious in most cases, although the roles of certain jobs can shift depending on your situation and/or your opponent. (Example: Paladin holding respawnable adds, as opposed to holding the actual boss. Scholar's more focused on stunning as opposed ton healing/nuking, etc.).

I don't think that lamps really go into your FFXI skill
Lamps are like
The ability to communicate and pay attention
I don't think there's any reason that a casual player and a veteran player should be any more or less able to pay attention and communicate than the other! I guess you're making the argument that "casual player" == "mentally deficient player" in which case my braindead comment stands
I mean obviously you're going to get screwed over by the RNG on occasion (order order order order order order!) but that doesn't make the event require more or less skill it just makes it require more tags

I pretty much ignore cause I'm trying to fill the alliance efficiently so we can head out. Then I get at least 3-5 snarky/hate tells because I didn't respond or didn't pick X or picked Y but not Y's friend Z (who had a Hoarfrost Blade) so now Y says they won't come cause clearly I'M the ***.

Did Veteran ever mean anything other than being persistent to a sadistic degree? Well, veteran as defined as "I beat the CoP era missions pre-nerfs!". XI seems to have two categories of Veterans:
A. You've played FFXI long enough to qualify for Social Security benefits. You walked backwards through the Valkurm Dunes getting lovetaps from a Bogy that wandered too close to your 5x THF, 1x WHM party one too many times for your own good.
B. You wield sufficient experience at XYZ event to know the ins and out of the event and likely can act in a leadership role to succeed at the run with less experienced members.

Well, there is a certain skill associated with being able to efficiently handle an order lamp floor. I'm not saying it's rocket science, or disagreeing that people who struggle are HELP I AM TRAPPED IN 2006 PLEASE SEND A TIME MACHINE/braindead, I'm just suggesting that MOST casuals are incapable of doing this efficiently enough.

I go BLM and proc, because I could be of use while not really having Atmacited built for my DRK. I need to level some melee atmacites. =/

But see, knowing my DRK doesn't have the atmacite to properly damage Jeuno+ mobs, I found another way to make myself useful, the DRK I mentioned earlier should level BLM...

Fyi a veteran player looking for linkshell that has quit for 1-2yrs, you are not a veteran. It dont matter when you started, the fact is you have no clue what to do in the new events and unless you have alot of gil saved to buy the newest and greatest stuff out, you wont do any good. Someone who stared at adoulin update has more knowledge doing delves/NMs. Maybe not job skill but content knowledge is greater.
Idk how many times when doing a pug run you get a so called Veteran who have to bail on the event bcuz they dont have the KI's to do so (meebles) or dont have the biv warp and have to run to pop area, but need group to come kill the reive since its somehow in the way, bcuz u dont have a map to see you can run around it, to just try to make it to a nm pop area. Then die over and over requesting reraise, bcuz u dont bring sneakinvis as a DD. A veteran doesnt ask to join until they are prepared.

You are a ***
and that's why I <3 you. Now play me some songs!
Laughing so hard... It's funny cause it's true! Go go dix!

Yo bored.
The only part I disagree with is the part about job skill. A 'veteran' is someone who should stand above non-veterans, so as such should have the event knowledge and job skill both.
A 'veteran' who fails like you described is a veteran loser though..

I go BLM and proc, because I could be of use while not really having Atmacited built for my DRK. I need to level some melee atmacites. =/
It helps ; ;
But see, knowing my DRK doesn't have the atmacite to properly damage Jeuno+ mobs, I found another way to make myself useful, the DRK I mentioned earlier should level BLM...
Well tbh if hes that bad, he'd likely waste space as any job thinking hes just gotta proc and do nothing else.. Hmmm.. wonder if he had any Absorb spells to proc with.. I've seen it happen..
Then again I've gone SMN to VW without Fenrir >.> Had one EV DRK SMN proc and it was Diabolos.. /luck

I been playing since 2003, pc since 2007 , done most things in the game by now. Even though i dont consider myself to be an elite player even after doing endgame for many years daily. But remember just to mention old events that sky sea took me a while to get the hang of it . the difference was that i guess people used to take the time to actually explain what was going on, and what was best way to accomplished even in shouts pick groups for nyzul ect. Couple of days as browse the forums after a fishing session i saw a shout for delve and was wth let me go and get plasma. i knew on the of the people in the party so was this should be fun. Things that went wrong lol, leader had to be one of the rudest ppl i seen in a long time he bash the brd for not putting enough songs i guess 3 or 4 whatever empy gives, best part was that brd didn't have an empy . then accused the whm to not curing fast enough. i done delve more than a few times by no means im an expert at it but really how fast do you have to cure somebody? i mean if you cure goes off thats it you can make it go any faster just cuse you tell OMGZFF im dying here ...
i just wish some people actually took the time to be less rude and remember how far we come in this game
Cure faster means you have to get fastcast/cure spellcasting - gears.
A whm should also at least : cast pro/shell V, rotate haste starting by himself, sort chat filters to be ready to cast -na spells, be able to cure through alliance and not only party. Don't blame the players, blame the game. The majority of us have a limited time of play, that's' not an excuse to not be good at your job.
P.S': i'm not elitist and if people can learn and listen i have no problem with them.

Dont sweat it. Basically the [ quote ] or [ spoiler ] go at the start of what you want to specify, then the [ /quote ] or [ /spoiler ] at the end. Spoilers go on the outside of a quote so as to include the quote in the spoiler, and not 'quote' the spoiler.

Honestly as long as you apply the same rules to yourself as you expect of others, idc in the slightest if someones 'elitist'. Its the hypocrites who expect to be able to slack while others go all out that bug the hell outta me.

Spoiler all the things My dream is ruined now. D:
Oh well, time to move onto something new!
New dream is to make noodles now, brb
I'm sure many of you see everyday shouts that required veteran players , play style . For quite some time i been pondering in the meaning of this nowadays, what does it truly means?.
Does it means that you are super elite and have great gear for your jobs?, or is it that you have too much time in your hands to do log in for 14 hrs a day and accomplished what some people cant in a tight schedule. FFXI is recently celebrating their 11th anniversary and with this being said, at least in my personal experience i haven't seen many new players come into the game , sometimes i read in the forums of very old friends and well known players returning to the game, but rarely do i see new people getting into the game, and when you do 80% of the time is the account of and existing player that got sick of shouting for something and decided to make a WHM account to dual box.
I would like to know peoples opinions in this matter , as im concerned Veteran has become nothing more than a rank in crafting and that's about it. because in reality how long do you have to play to become good at your job?. some people excel in large events while others are better suited for small scale missions and events, but that is nothing more than play stile .
i know that ffxi community has been famous for quite some for being either nice and friendly or complete elitists pricks no offense intended in this comment by the way. I'm just wondering were do we draw the line to define players as veterans and such . because even after you have all the best gear available to your job, how are you supposed to judge?. A whm job is to cure , rng to shoot shit and dd's well to hit stuff with a thunder stick. But after 11 years of beating stuff with the same thunder stick how much longer do we need before we can acknowledge that other people are good at their jobs , or compliment them or even advise them. Since it seems that is either be categorized as elite or GTFO. Very sorry for the wall of text now let the killing begin . I'll lay back and get my shield ready for the opinions to come .
Sincerely ~ Nadie
