So I bought a PSP Extended Battery Life Kit for my PSP-3001 a few days ago. After looking online on Ebay/Amazon and others and seeing crazy prices I started calling around to stores around where I live. I found 2 in stock at a store about an hour away and went and bought one. If I had ever expected this, I would have opened it while I was there to check it it out...but anyways.

I got home, opened it, and was trying to fit it my PSP but was having major problems. After a while I noticed the problem. The Battery was 'ballooning' up on the front and back faces of it as if there's a big air bubble inside or something busted and expanded. It is probably about 1.5x thicker at it's center than it should be. If I put enough pressure I can get the cover (yes, the cover for PSP3000s that came with the kit) to clamp on but it is WAY to much pressure than should be applied. The ballooning part is quite squishy but just expands back out when pushed down. I'm going to return it for another that I hope is not the same. Even more worried about ordering one online now and having the same problem. Anyone else ever experience this?

I had that happen about a year ago with my PSP-1000 battery that came with the system (I got it in, like, 2006). It got to the point where the casing actually cracked, and the battery would just die sometimes while playing, even if I had it plugged in simultaneously.

All you can really do is replace it, as much as it sucks. I think I asked on another forum and someone said it just happens when rechargable batteries get old enough. Maybe the one you got had been sitting in the store for a few years?

Yea, that's what I was assuming. Which makes me also assume that the other 1 of the the 2 they had in stock will also suffer the same problem.

Call and have them crack it open and test. You want to exchange, but if the other one is bust, you want your money back.

Lithium polymer batteries are temperamental and vengeful devices...

If you store them properly they will last long time. If you don't they can be really nasty and dangerous.

Stop attempting to use them and return them to the shop. Explain the situation.

These batteries have a shelf life of about four years.

They should be stored with about 50-60% of charge. If you store them fully charged or fully discharged they will inflate and look like a balloon. lol

Finally, what make it inflate like a balloon is hydrogen. And that plus oxygen you have a very dangerous chance of fire hazard.
