How about Myochin kabuto and Saotome kote +2 for the meditate buffs? Personally I'd rather have both, and actually do to the point where Myochin is actually +1'd, and gain 180 TP from just one use of meditate, meaning I can pop sekkanoki, then Fudo for AM1 after first hit, followed by AM1 augmented Shoha... Granted, a situational example, but still proves the old gear is still viable and should be worked for in certain situations.

Off-topic but for your information empyrean aftermath does NOT apply to weaponskills.
Hm, then tell me how I managed to hit the Taur NM boss in neo-limbus for around 4k+ on Shoha after Fudo. I'm interested in seeing your answer to that.

Aftermath doesn't apply to WS, period. End of discussion. This has been a non-issue since 90 cap.

it is pointless in the sense that if you have a 261 DMG great axe i wonder how much it matters what else you're wearing

1) I guess that depends on how much multihit gear you have

2) It's not like all new content is just going to be the same difficulty as the old stuff, and these new super weapons are going to crush all in your path. You'll need that kind of damage to have a chance against the next wave of stuff, which is more or less the exact thing Matsui said - and - the exact flight plan for every other game ever.

And some of us didn't play those games because we didn't *like* that gameplan.

I'm not interested in a flight plan that lands everything not named "World of Warcraft" in a smoldering heap. If I wanted to play a game built like WoW, I'd be playing WoW.

the dirty little secret of world of warcraft is that you never actually get any stronger

the gear you get makes the numbers that pop up on your screen a little bigger, but once you get a bunch of them and start seeing a meaningful difference, you move on to the next tier, with bosses that aren't actually any stronger or more difficult but have juuuuuust enough more health and damage output to put you back where you were at the start of the previous tier

running is fun, but running on a treadmill is only fun until it isn't, at which point it never really becomes fun again

It's not really wild when Matsui said he envisioned doing one form of content to get gear for the next form of content to get gear for the next form of content, etc. It's a basic gear treadmill, which hasn't precisely been the way XI's worked up until now. It's been less linear than that.

And I'm not arguing against that at all. The original statement was, "with that, why would anything else matter?!", and that's the answer. I don't like that plan either, which is why I've played XI for so long.

As to the speculation part; some of it, sure, but Matsui is on the record explaining that sort of progression as being the new thrust of things, so I don't think it's fashioned entirely out of whole cloth.

You don't get stronger relative to what you "should" be doing. It's a (mostly) linear progression.

The thing that always made XI endgame so appealing was that there were so many different things you could do to improve yourself. Salvage/Limbus/Dynamis/Kings/Sky/Sea/Einherjar/Nyzul/etc etc etc. Advancement was parallel, not serial.

Anyway, I don't think we're really arguing different points, I just thought the "Why would you ever need more than 640K of RAM" angle to the GA damage was a little silly. New stuff's a comin.

So basically they've decided to sacrifice one of FFXI's greatest strengths in order to...do what exactly?
