Hello all! It has been two years since I have been away from this game and decided to come back! I am attempting to use a PS3 controller and I have all of the buttons working so far, except the L2 and R2 buttons. I can not figure out how to map them in the FFXI Config settings. I wanted to use these as my macro buttons (used to play on Xbox and wanted to keep a similar control scheme) Does anyone think they can help me out.

Also, less important, I have all the buttons mapped however there are an addition three options to assign buttons to and I am not sure if I need them. ( I am assuming it's for gamepads with a lot more buttons to make it easier for the player)

Operate menu with movement control
Operate camera with movement control
Toggle movement, menu, and/or camera controls.

Thanks for any help!

the PS3 controller, like the 360 controller use an x-input method.

aka not possible with the default drivers.

I can't recall if the PS3 controller even installs without a custom driver, been so long since I've tried it.

motioninjoy is your best bet as far as PS3 controllers go, and it's a pain in the ***, but it is possible.

As stated above, your best option is to use Motionjoy to get all things assigned to work. Personally I use Motionjoy and have done so for several years without much issue. The group doing the drivers/software even went as far to get WHQL licensing, and so long as you read the faq on how to set it up it isn't that difficult to use.

In some cases you will need to read on how to install the rumble driver properly. Seems that it will not work with FFXI unless you manually move that part to the correct driver file. This only applies to users running 64bit operating systems since the install does not yet install the force feedback file into the syswow64 folder. If you follow the instructions here you can get force feedback (aka rumble) working on the controller. If you don't care about rumble this step is unnecessary.

I never had to move any file...

I would enjoy the program more if it weren't adware.

I have been using motionjoy. I assumed that I needed to do something in the FFXI config menu and not motionjoy since the controller wasn't working at all without configuring it in FFXI Config. I guess I'll take a gander in the Motionjoy menus to see if I can find something. Thanks

Edit: Actually now that I am thinking of it, the shoulder buttons work for me in DC Universe Online. So I really do think it is something in the FFXI Config... :/

Easy way would be set motioninjoy to PS2 on the Home tab. Once that's done, double check in the FFXI Config that controller is enabled and you should be good to go.

honestly the last time I used it, I told it to use it as a PS2 controller and it worked fine.

and then you can test it in the gamepad menu (Windows), then in the FFXI config menu (not playonline).

So yes, there's 4 menus to check, 3 of which are relevant, 1 of those is really for troubleshooting (Windows menu, as if it's working there, then your problem is configuration in the game, not the software/controller).

x-input treats direct input devices "l2/r2" as axis instead of buttons, take it up with M$

I did as was suggested with switching it to PS2 and that sort of helped, the L2 & R2 button work, however now it doesn't recognize any input from the analog sticks.

reboot the computer.

start motioninjoy

make sure it's on "PS2"

hit "enable"

run gamepad menu and check it there. (if it's working continue, if not I'm not sure what to tell you other than keep trying, I've been there a few times before, and I don't recall exactly what fixed it)

run xi config

configure

play

There's a reason I just use a PS2 controller adapter now...
