5 year old suspended for haircut.
Quote: When 5-year-old Ethan Clos showed up at school with a short, spiky mohawk last week, his fellow kindergarteners thought it was cool. But administrators at Reid Primary and Middle School in Springfield, Ohio, deemed the edgy cut too disruptive, and ordered him home until he adopted a tamer style.

His mom, Keshia Castle, said that school officials suspended her son on Wednesday. After he begged her for the hairstyle, she finally let him get it over spring break.
Australian Kids Banned from Birthday Tradition at School
"They seen his hair like it was," she told WHIO-TV on Friday. "All the little kids were going over and feeling on it and everything."
Superintendent Gregg Morris says that's exactly why they had to send little Ethan home.
"Our dress and grooming policies are designed to ensure that clothing and hairstyles do not cause a distraction to the learning environment," Morris said in a statement.
The school's handbook states that "Hair shall be worn above the eyebrows and must be kept clean, neat and trimmed" and specifies that boys may not wear their hair longer than the bottom of their shirt collars. It also says: "Hair styling or coloring arrangements which are disruptive or distracting are not permissible."
“Our policy clearly states that any dress or grooming which is disruptive or distracting to the educational process is not acceptable," Morris verified to WHIO-TV. "In this particular case, the student’s hairstyle did provide disruption to the classroom."
Ethan's grandmother, Joyce Wells, thinks the suspension was too harsh a penalty to pay for a hairstyle. A mohawk, she said, isn't really that different from other styles where the hair is cut close to the scalp, especially if the mohawk itself is short.
"I could understand if it was colored, and if it stood up off longer of his head," his grandmother said. "But I don't see nothing wrong with this."
This isn't the mile-high, stiffly gelled punk look of the past. (In fact, if they hadn't used styling product to give his mohawk some definition, Ethan's hair would probably have looked much like a typical military cut.) The child's stylist may have taken a cue from celebrity kids like Maddox Jolie-Pitt and Willow Smith, both of whom have sported the spiky look, to mixed reviews. Kingston Rossdale (son of rockers Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale), Madonna's 4-year-old son David Banda, and Cruz Beckham (whose parents are sport-and-style icons David and Victoria Beckham) have also sported modified mohawks, where the sides are cut close, rather than shaved bare, and a strip of hair on the top is left a bit longer.
In 2009 (and again in 2011), a volunteer football coach at the local high school wore a blond-tipped Mohawk to motivate his team. When a WHIO-TV reporter asked Morris why the coach's hair was acceptable while the kindergartener's was not, Morris said that the two situations are totally different.
“One involved an extracurricular spirit initiative designed to motivate our kids in the football playoffs a year ago," Morris explained. "Classrooms were not disrupted. The other poses a disruption to the learning environment as well as violates the student dress code."
Ethan's mom told WHIO-TV that her son would return to school on Monday, after she has his head shaved, but the style shouldn't have been such a big deal.
"He's a 5-year-old little boy who chose to wear his hair a certain way," she told the news station.
..... Seriously what the *** is wrong with all these schools anymore?

Cool haircut, indefinite vacation AND media coverage?
Sounds like the kid made out like a bandit.

I wish we could overthrow dimwitted education employees like they did with corrupt tyrannical kings in the days of old.
Even with something as embarrassing and stupid as this sadly won't warrant any "urge to resign".

Most school in Japan kids aren't allowed to use any kind of "product" in their hair. Kids will come in all spiked up thinking they are cool from time to time, teacher just makes them go dunk their head and calm it down. Seems like that would have been enough in this case.

This has nothing to do with the school system being stupid. If it clearly states in the policy/dress code that died hair and certain hairstyles are prohibited then it would follow those who do not follow the rules must take responsibility for their actions.

And seriously, comparing educational employees to tyrannical kings? Take your anarchist, liberal attitude elsewhere.

The policy was probably written with something that was continually distracting or was significantly disruptive - like, a swastika shaved into someone's head, or something huge and extravagant that actually got in the way of normal class activity.
Whoever wrote that probably never even considered that they would have to tell future teachers that it's their job to say things like, "don't worry about Ethan's hair, everyone sit down," let alone tell future administrators that it's their job to interpret the rules using tools such as common sense.

Seems a bit lame using some obscure clause in a school policy book to make mountains out of molehills in what would otherwise be a normal day of school for the boy.

Pretty much this.
The school likely has that in place to make the school as respectable and fair to other students as possible. Same deal with schools who enforce uniforms.
If it's in the code of conduct since day one, there really isn't room for people to gasp and point fingers that the school is terrible or whatever.

Liberal? I think you mean libertarian. If you're going to try insult one side, at least learn where different views fall on the political spectrum.

I'm sorry but if your child is easily distracted by another child's haircut then the problem might be your kid..

Pretty sure what I said can't be tied down to just liberalism or just libertarianism considering it was a pretty broad statement. It could be justified as both.

That related story is ridiculous too, about a student dyeing her brown hair auburn and the school suspending her for it. These things are never an issue over here, why is it such a big deal (in some schools) in the states?

Dress codes in schools have gotten more and more off the charts as time's gone by. Short skirts and spaghetti straps? Sure I can understand not allowing those. But hair colors, jeans with holes in them, hair styles? The *** is this

If that were the case here in Hawaii, every kid would be suspended from school. That style haircut is the norm here.

Never had a problem when I was in school back in the mid 90s... but I agree things are getting out of control... Not just on the schools rules and codes, but the students also. There is a reason why schools are so strict, (some stricter than others of course)... Its because the students at one point went over board with how they act and dress. You should be able to wear what you want and have a certain hair style, as long as its reasonable.... The schools reaction to the 5yr old and the girl with dyed hair is wrong, there shouldnt have been any issue with either of those two... Probably looking to make an example of them!
By Artemicion 2013-04-08 20:38:30
While I understand and sympathize with the need to enforce school rules and policy therein, but there comes a point where it becomes counter intuitive when improperly enforced, thus turning what would otherwise be petty and insignificant into an ordeal for the media to have a field day with.
Whether it's the law, license agreements, or policy, common sense should not be exempt or absent when enforcing them.

I was expected a 5 year-old with 'Nobama' or '666' shaved onto his head. The placement in the politics and religion subforum is misleading ._.

You have to take the entire thing with a grain of salt . My son begged me and the wife for weeks for a Mohawk as well and when I shaved my head last week , we gave in . Here in Connecticut that hair style isn't as extraordinary as it is in say Ohio or other ....... more conservative states . If my son was sent home for his 'hawk I would laugh but most likely just shave his head , as much to his dismay as it would be, and explain while some rules are for breaking , education is much more important at his age than involving the media to make some sort of silly statement or protest the system . I mean seriously , the kid is five , both sides need to get over themselves .

This is what America debates when we don't feel like talking about how the education system is going down the tubes.
