Ok I am taking math this term and I know people like to get bent over math but I sometimes need the help....
So I hope this thread doesn't go into some flame/douche fest...I will topicban you from my thread if you are going to destroy or start fighting. And don't nitpick of me putting parenthesis or not, I type it exactly what it looks like from the program and book I use....
I am more a visual learner and the book doesnt give an example of this specific problem.
So my first problem I have is a linear equation with fractions...
y/5 + 3/4 = y/2 + 3/4
I have the answer already...just I need to know how to get the answer the book gives.
Answer: y = 0

move the Ys over to one side and solve? D:
y/5 + 3/4 = y/2 + 3/4
multiply both sides by the least common denominator, 20, 20*(y/5+3/4)=20*(y/2+3/4) 4y+15=10y+15 subtract 15 from both sides 4y=10y+15-15 subtract 10y from both sides 4y-10y=15-15 -6y=0 divide by -6~ y=0

So I wouldn't put like terms for this, I would make it: y/5 + 3/4 to 4y/20 + 15/20

Thank you That would get the same answer, just more having to do intermediate multiplication. Is this algebra? I've been trying to find this out for a while now and maybe finally someone can help me. It's been boggling my mind like a chinese riddle, one of life's many problems that just has no definite answer, wherein the mysteries of the Universe are woven into the very fabric of its being. I've searched high and low for an answer and my calculator simply told me no. So please, tell me...

It's really just a set of rules and relationships. Once you know the rules, then you can just follow them AND BAM! Awwwww yeah! As for how math is actually created by like, mathemiticians and such... I'm no Isaac Newton. I sure do wonder what it'd be like to have a brain capable of INVENTING Calculus.

Generally for these types of problems it's easier (and faster) if you combine the variables on one side and solve. Just remember what you do to one side of the equation you must also do on the other side. Vyre's response is probably the fastest method in solving this problem. (I guess you could look for the common denominator as well, but that would take WAY too long)
