54% to 46% Colorado voters today legalized marijuana, the first state to compleatly decriminalize marijuana. We've had medical status for a few years now, but Colorado took it a step further today. It won't take effect until at the earliest March, or at the latest October 2013.
I don't smoke the stuff myself, (anymore that is) but I think this is a wonderful thing. It's always made more sense to me to regulate and tax something rather then to make it simply illegal. We all know how well prohibition worked...
And...
inb4 people say the feds still consider it illegal and will crack down on Colorado... :P

yay us! I'm sad that CU Boulder will still spend nearly 100k on ending the 4-20 gathering out on the quad.

Not just Colorado Washington Legalized it too. and in washington it allows people over 21 to carry pot with them.
legalizing weed is stupid it allows people to smoke wherever they want now and that causes harm to people around them.

yeah 'cause the much more harmful substances that were already legal are much safer amirite? Might see some hefty smog buildup for a couple of weeks though, keep your highbeams on

It will have to adhere to the same rules as cigarettes. You cant just smoke wherever you want willy nilly.

I don't think we'll see people smokin in the streets. Most states already have laws about smoking tobacco (indoors anyway) in public places.

There are no negative side effects directly associated with marijuana usage or second-hand smoke given off from the smoking of marijuana. Just like the OP stated, the taxation of it increases revenue by a significant amount. That being said, I could see the obvious negatives with smoking and driving/operating machinery much like alcohol. Although with smoking, you're in control of what you are doing, it does inhibit motor functions in some ways. Also, in my honest opinion I'd much rather smell marijuana while walking down the street than cigarette smoke, yet cigarettes have always been legal. Marijuana is just catching up with America's other past time "bad habits."

There are negative side affects second hand inhaling anything.
edit: and absolutely are negative side effects from directly inhaling.

Yea, obviously there are side effects, heh thats kinda the point. But you gotta admit they are far less severe than tobacco and booze.

So what are the penalties for driving under the influence of weed? Same as booze?

I would imagine the same as they already are. You get DUI's driving while under influence of pot same as booze.

I think people sometimes confuse marijuana's safety with "it's not harmful" or "it's less harmful". Smoking anything is harmful, period. It's just not a healthy practice. There are other ways to use marijuana though.

Indeed. ever since CO had medical status, (well and b4 then too obviously) the use of epidermals, edibals and (brace yourself) even suppositorys are very popular in the medical community.
And there are alreadly laws in place here for driving under the influince I forget what it is exactly, but its something like a .04%(made up number) thc detectable level or something. Though I'm not sure how that works since the stuff stays in your system for like a month.

Nice to see a few states with common sense, hopefully more will fallow. There's so many benefits to reap for states legalizing marihuana.

Quite frankly, I could care less if someone wants to smoke ganja, just as long as they don't do it around me. Having an allergic reaction to marijuana is not fun to say the least.

I can see your point. But obviously the same rules will apply to this as smoking cigs. They're not going to do something stupid like letting people smoke it wherever or in their cars in stuff. Like someone already said, there's already laws in place for driving while you're stoned, and they probably wont change or get more severe.
On a side note, anyone from NoCo area? :D

Except there haven't really been enough studies on it for there to be a definitive link between the two, primarily due to it's non legal status.

It may be decriminalized, but if it works the same as medical weed in CA, you may still have to piss test for jobs.
My brother has medical weed over in CA, but his company is based in more than one state, and the HQ is not in CA, so they don't make special rules for that one state. Company policy is that he has to be able to pass regular piss tests to keep his job.

Yep, it was held up in the supreme court as well.

You're both wrong, its known not to cause lung cancer. In fact it has anti tumor effects on things like lung cancer. Marijuana smoke does not screw with chromosomes like tobacco. Learn some stuff.

In addition to that, many doctors have been known to prescribe marijuana for chemotherapy patients looking to relieve the pain/sickness from the procedures.

1 observation does not make it a known fact. There are many factors to take into count.

Ignorance up in this thread. Legalization is not about whether or not you think smoking is bad for you or whether or not you like it. Seriously, get a damn clue.

Probably an unnecessary post from me, but i have no idea what that has to do with ignorance.

I mean, voting for Romney is probably bad for you and that's not illegal.
