Hello, I am an active FFXI player who will be moving to Seoul, Korea in early next year. I have heard there were log in issues, I found a thread about it on alla khazam:

http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=10&mid=1219917236275954806&p=1

I also found a few threads about it here on FFXIAH, which came up later than the allakhazam thread, and where people seemed to have some success in logging in.

So is the problem still ongoing?

You going to need VPN to make it work.

i've also been reading that some ISP's work while others don't. LG apparently works while KT doesn't.

VPN is about the only way to make it work, SE has a IP range ban on a lot of countries due to heavy RMT industry. And then some countries ban SE's games because it violates their ethics/laws.

I've had issues over the years with POL connecting in S.Korea and UAE. Both times a VPN fixed it. You can try it with a free one such as AnchorFree (hotspot shield) VPN -- if it works, I'd upgrade to a paid service. Hotspot Shield has bandwidth limitations and data caps for the free version.

SSL VPN's work best generally but get a little more pricey. Or if you have a friend/family member willing to share some bandwidth, you can VPN through their computer in your home country and connect that way too. For free.

Depends if you will be living on base or off base. I never had problem playing when I was living off base and using LG, there was no need for VPN. Then I moved on base and unfortunately, military only has contract with KT and they filter your port. If you will be staying on base, I suggest you check this VPN provider Overplay I never had problem with connection and the best part is they have a server located in S.Korea.

I always always log in the UAE fine and I've been playing this game since 2003.

i won't be living on any base, i'll be in seoul residential area.

well that's good to hear further confirmation that LG works fine, i've heard the same from a bunch of other people. so i'll look into that once i get out there. thanks everyone.

quick technical question:

i'll be bringing my american-made computers out there. is computer hardware universal? will i be able to buy graphics card/cpu/motherboard etc. upgrades up there and install it directly in or will there be compatibility issues? what i've heard thus far is that most computer hardware connections are universal, and that the only additional hardware i'll have to buy is a power adaptor, as power voltage & stuff are different out there?

My family work in UAE , when I visit them during my vacations I occasionally can't log for some reason ;x thought they have FFXI blocked , but when I use VPN I never had that issue.

I used to live in Seoul, now living in Chuncheon. Depending on where you live in Seoul you might not even need a power adapter to use American electronics. My old apartment was in an area that was still on 110v instead of 220v like most of the country. As long as you are careful about what you plug in where (don't plug a 110v only plug into a 220v outlet unless you have a downconverter) pretty much everything should work just fine. As for ISP, I just switched to LG U+ and am able to connect to FFXI just fine; when I had olleh KT I needed a VPN to connect to the game.

I have been thinking of coming back to the game for a while now and created a trial account in order to update my software ^^; I'm afraid most of my friends are either gone or playing at different times, so I'm beginning to look for a new group to do things with. Don't really want to hop servers, hope I can find ppl on Bahamut that play during JP prime time and whom I can speak to ^^;

I see people keep that thread.

Well I did a bit of reverse engineering on their network and yeah, certain parts can be blocked at times. I then came up with a method of proxying only FFXI traffic to a friends socks-5 server back in the states. Eventually decided to just buy Overplay server as they have connection points in Japan and I got much better response then going from SK -> USA -> Japan.

Personally I'm kinda amazing there are this many players over here. Guess we're all on different servers so it's spread out.

Ohh I'm in Deagu for those wondering.

about a week or so till the big move. i likely won't be able to get started on ffxi till end of march or so, when my computer equipment will be shipped over.

question i've been hearing a lot about converters. will a standard converter work ok with my computer equipment? are there converter power strips, where the plug of the power strip that plugs into the wall is the korean style, while the inputs on the strip itself are all american-friendly?

I didn't seem to have issues connecting when I was there visiting for 2 weeks. Just plugged it in via LAN and badda bing badda boom it gave no issues.

You can also just buy the 2 prong adapter (looks like this) http://lacoloronline.com/product/images/EA1.jpg for a few bucks and just plug it in without the ground.

yeah but i'll tell ya, right now all my computer equipment takes up almost three full power strips. so i'm wondering if there's a a more convenient way to go about this than buying a dozen singular converters.

I currently live in Seoul, in a residential area (non-military) and I have never had any login issues or any problems playing FF. Also, I use KT wireless, and do not use a VPN.

I'm using LG and I'm blocked. i.i

Edit: Gotta use a VPN... but it's only in my bldg on base. Other buildings I don't require one. It's annoying.

Yea, Korea never had a block. Then in 2008 KT blocked it. LG never has. Was around the time Japan wanted Korea island. I did use a vpn until a year ago when i found out LG doesn't block it.

Welcome to Korea

alright well a little update now that i'm in korea.

i don't have all my computer equipment with me, so i haven't been able to get on and try the game, but i did download playonline onto my laptop to see if i can get on.

currently i'm staying with some family and i have no idea what ISP they're using. when i try to get on to playonline via wi-fi connection to my family's internet, i get error pol-1160 or whatever it is. however, when i plug my iphone into my laptop and use my iphone's internet connection, i'm able to get on playonline just fine. strange thing is, my iphone is connected via wifi to the same family internet connection.

if i'm understanding iphone internet technology correctly (and that's a big 'if'... someone correct me if i'm wrong), in these cases the iphone basically becomes the computer's wireless card, or router. so i wonder if that means that even if using an ISP that's confirmed to be banned like KT, having an acceptable router will still allow it to work?

No. Korea blocks some ips. In this case ffxi. Kt in paticulare. Lg doesnt. Most people who play in kprea get a vpn provider like http://www.strongvpn.com. then no probs playing

I spent 2 years in Korea myself and had a few runs with different services. I know that the services on base (Osan at least) block the ports that FFXI uses, and it will kick a pol error at you. That said, I am assuming that because you are going through your iphone, that the phone is connecting via a different port which is currently not blocked (assuming your family is on base), or it has a built in VPN. While I was under this restriction, I had to log into a VPN first, then into POL, which all worked fine then.

Later I moved off base, and I had SKBroadband, which I had zero problems with in regards to logging into FFXI. The problems I did have with the ISP I chalked up to shitty wiring coming into the complex I lived in.

i just looked at my family's modem, it's KT, and no we do not live on base. we live in a residential area, and my iphone does not have a built in vpn... well that i'm aware of anyway.

so is it just KT?

I can't vouch for the other major ISP in Korea (KT, SKBroadband, LGU (DACOM)) but I do know that SKB works perfectly for all your MMORPG needs.

If you stick with KT, as the other person said, StrongVPN works great (same service I used).

my phone is skt, so maybe that had something to do with it. but again, it was connected via wifi to a KT service...

i'm hesitant about VPN, i was informed that that generally causes really bad lag?

Kt blocks ffxi asi stated above. The provider i listed i used for four years. No lag as you pay for it. If you get a free vpn expect to disconect every thirty minutes or lag yes
