Okay.. to start this off one day I was asked if I could help them out with some translations, and wanted to know if they could have some simple things to say. Well, this gave me the idea to start this off and hopefully "help" some other people that might want this information too.
I've tried to think of most possible situations and things that would come up on a regular basis, and this is what I come up with.

A little section I cut off from the page as an example:

And here's the [link] to the rest of the guide on our website. Please read the beginning as I've tried to be as detailed as possible! Also I'm not typically a forum person but I'll defiantly try to watch this as much as possible. Any suggestions/comments are welcome. Updates will come to this as often as possible, and if you have something you want added and already have the translation it would be much appreciated! Mods edit this post as needed~

It's "Jeuno"...

Just curious, where that "Jueno" comes from ?
It's very common for NA players to write it that way.

It's awesome that someone step up and work this stuff out.
Thank you for putting your time on this. I know I'll use it. m(_ _)m

But still, I am wondering where the NA players got that "Jueno" from... XD

Thanks for that, get in the habit of writing it like that since I see it so much. Not exactly sure why, probably from how I hear others pronounce it.

XD

I think most NA players pronounce it Joo-no. Since it's a long u sound, it just feels natural to put the U first. Or maybe that's just me being a weirdo. :/

No, that's how it's pronounced. Long u sound. I believe they say the name of it in the intro video.

I believe SE released their "Glossary of Game Terms" section because they realized that players need more terms but there just isn't any way for them to add them all.

Thanks, I'll defiantly add some of those on there! Some seem a little more out of casual chat or what you wouldn't see normally though. Working on trying to stick around that theme.

If you know how to do that then feel free to change it. I just ripped it off of the official website and converted it to BBCode.

XD

I think most NA players pronounce it Joo-no. Since it's a long u sound, it just feels natural to put the U first. Or maybe that's just me being a weirdo. :/
This plus the fact that the majority of people can't spell, you end up with this kind of thing very often, for a lot of the in-game terms.

That being said, after buying/finally finding a lot of old FFXI books, most of them have butchered English translations.

As for how things are really pronounced, you have to keep in mind that while it's French sounding, English sounding, German sounding names and such, it's still made by Japanese so the "real" way of saying it will never be what you think/it should be.

I fell off my chair when I heard the first Japanese say "Davoi" on Skype.

On my server JPs shout for Bot. rex with

So I guess I'm just trying to say that there is a lot of shorthand to consider as well.

Yea, I explained that in the VW section of the guide. Sometimes they shout with just the zone name or part of the NM name. I used the example of Ig-Alima, which is either 砂丘(short for Valkurm Dunes バルクルム砂丘), イッグアリマ(Katakana), or いっぐありま(Hiragana). I've seen all the ways used so either would be understood.

This post made my obsessive copying and pasting into Google all worthwhile.

But this guide is excellent. A great tool - thanks!

you might as well add a hiragana, katakana, and basis of kanji guide as well because without it, most of the guide is useless unless you already understand whats going on.

Glad you like it! Some time went into it for sure to get everything "prettied up" for the final work. Should see my orignal notes.. would have anyone scratching their head.

The guide was designed to help anyone recognize and give simple answers/questions back to JP and vice-versa. If anyone is willing to learn the three sructures of writing then they're plenty of excellent guides on the net for free that can give accurate information for beginners and beyond.

One thing I do when I'm not sure how to say random FFXI things in Japanese is to use the item translator.

Let's use Shiva as an example. My first inclination when translating "Shiva" into Japanese is to make it 「シーバー」, but what if it's 「シーバ」、「シバー」、or something else entirely? Yikes, someone might see through my sloppy impersonation of a Japanese person!! If this happens I tell them I'm Chinese, which I can fake almost perfectly. o.o I'm just OCD about not letting people know I'm American--a friend of mine got his account suspended for typing in Japanese with the NA client (*gasp* people use windower). >.>

But anyway, back to Shiva! So we're not sure how exactly to adapt this word into Japanese. Luckily, the answer is right at our fingertips! There are several items in the game with Shiva's name in them--Shiva's claws will do the trick. We just have to type...

/translate "Shiva's claws" ej

...and FFXI will spit out the correct terms:

"Shiva's claws" (E) → "シヴァクロー" (J)

「シヴァ」? I wasn't even close. D: Good thing we checked. o.o Obviously this won't work for every word you might need, but I've found it very useful in a pinch!

Stay awesome, ffxiah! (`_´)ゞ

Edit: fixed typo, thanks for pointing that out hahah.^^; Living in China hasn't been doing my Japanese any favors, that's for sure. x.x

Thanks for this! Very useful to have as a quick reference :D I did notice two small mistakes in your post though:

"Please Show Me || mitte kudasai || みって下さい

This should say みせて下さい(misete kudasai). Unless this is some form of colloquial speech that i'm unaware of? みせて means "show me" and みて means "look" but I haven't heard of mitte/みって.

"Don't Touch Me || sawaranaide || さわるないで"

This should say さわらないで, at the moment it reads, sawarunaide ^^

「シヴャ」?

Wow. I would have thought it to be シバー or シヴァー, but why a small ya? That really makes no sense.

Anyway, thanks for both of these guides! Being able to read hiragana and katakana really does help, and I'm not sure how helpful such guides are for people who can't read them. Mmm, I'm still lacking too much in kanji, unfortunately.

Some other important things to know:

Let's be friendly to one another - yoroshiku [ よろしく ( 宜しく ) ]
* This is something most Japanese open up a party with. Use it when joining a party or a linkshell for the first time. A lot of textbooks write this as "nice to meet you" but that's not the most accurate translation ("nice to meet you" is hajimemashite [ はじめまして ]). They might also shorten it to 'yoro'.

I'm back! - tadaima! [ ただいま! ]

Welcome back. - okaeri [ おかえり ( お帰り ) ]
* You can add nasai to the end of okaeri, but many leave it at okaeri or even oka. Depends on the level of politeness you wish to express (longer is more polite).

Disbanding now, good job. - otsukaresama deshita [ おつかれさまでした ( お疲れ様でした ) ]
* I don't know if this is the exact translation, but it's something the Japanese say when they are disbanding the party for the day.

Otsukaresama is more like "thanks for your hard work". You will often hear this in real life too. For example, people will use it among their colleagues when they finished their shift at work.

Edit: Also it is in fact シヴァ not シヴャ. As you said it doesn't make much sense so I double checked in game :)
