FFXIII: Lightning Returns

I was disappointed with the whole game, from the start to the end.

I didn't get the DLC ending for 13 (I heard there was a DLC "true" ending), but the ending to 13 was *** awesome. I almost cried honestly. I loved 13 so much and really think it got too bad a rap for not much reason.

Thats 13-2 that has the dlc real ending. Came out way too late that I havent gone back to finish that DLC yet

Ahhh ok. Well either way, as 13 itself stood, I thought it was actually quite amazing, despite Sazh being "token", and his entire existence being fairly racist.

Is it the tower with the music elevator? that is the only time you should be needing to do the sub quests. Idk if you can really mess up your gear though, fights will be longer but still manageable, Can try a party of Fang, Lightning and Hope with

She wasn't even the main character in XIII. Vanille, if anyone, was the central character.

And how was she a terrible character? Because she wasn't buddy buddy with everyone right away? Because she spent a lot of time angry, and lashing out at others, over failing to save her only sister? Or because she was very stoic like the typical soldier is supposed to be?

That's like saying Hope is a crappy character because he was acting like the teenager he was. And his anger at Snow was completely justified, if slightly misplaced.

Srsly though. Lightning is an awful character. On the plus side they made her hair pink so she wasn't ANOTHER carbon copy of the same ***main character they've had since 9....

You're saying she's NOT a shitty character because you've had nothing to compare to since the last "real" final fantasy. While I feel 8 had an inherently decent story, I will accept it wasn't as widely accepted. I WILL go so far as to call FFVI the last "good" story.

At least XIII has good gameplay though.... Oh right, you just *** setup the battles and hit x. One LONG cutscene of poor storyline with an arguably shitty character (Cloud was almost 20 years ago now... stop recasting him). Got it.

She was terrible because there was no explanation for why she was such an ***. She just was. The most interesting characters you can despise (or love, but that's different), but also understand why they act so despicably, placing you into somewhat of an ambivalent state. You don't create characters that you can hate for the sake of hating them. That's cliche and pointless. Any idiot with a script can do that.

There was a book released in Japan taking place before the game starts, reading it gives a ton more insight into the characters and shows several events that were not shown in the game.

What needed to be explained? She was thrust into an extremely shitty situation and her method of coping was to lash out at others. Many many people do it. She, Sazh and Hope were the only relate-able characters in that situation. Possibly Vanille too if you're the type to try to cheer everyone around you up.

You're right. We can quantify anything under the sun given enough time. But if you call a rose a rose someone pulls the opinion card. The sky isn't really blue its a light turquoise. It's poor character design.

If someone reviews a book/movie/game/script and says "this character is extremely cliche for the series and shallow/boring by any OTHER standards" it's of course an opinion (but no less true). I still refuse to believe that all opinions have the gift of infallibility or irrefutability.

Except mine when I say FFXIII and all sequels/spin-offs are utter

I never understand this, no final fantasy main storyline is difficult and the battle system is never that intricate. Just cast the strongest Cure while using the broken battle mechanic in each game to kill everything. Also no one was forcing you to use the autobattle. Not to mention sometimes it was detrimental to use the pre-selected commands.

At least in FFXIII each class was useful and balanced throughout the entire game. No one class dominated the others and they all worked well together. Magic Damage was just as valuable as melee damage. You had to use buffs and debuffs to your advantage. Being able to quickly swap from an offensive role to 3 healers and then back to an offensive role was something that doesn't usually happen in Final Fantasy. The battle system was much more fast paced and exciting than any other Final Fantasy thus far, while still keeping the atb elements.

If all you did was press X I doubt you experienced most of the postgame content.

If you wanna discuss your opinion and validate/negate other peoples points please take it somewhere appropriate. There's probably some sort of internet forum or discussion group for that sort of thing (preferably under an appropriate topic heading).

Nostalgia goggles, I swear it comes up every thread like this. Your precious 2D games weren't the end all of gaming. These games are still good you just have poor taste. Lightning was a good character.

Please tell us what a good character is, since you know everything about what a game needs (not sure why you haven't created one yourself yet!.) Tell us what the characters should look like and be wearing. Obviously clothes that are from their worlds aren't good, they should be wearing what we wear in ours. No unique designs for main characters, they need to be wearing suits and tie.

It's not even 2D era games... I like ocarina of time far better than any of the zelda games before or after.

I don't think anything before dragon quest 8 is worth playing by anyone who didn't grow up in that era (although I would recommend 4 just as a "look what NES was capable of but no one ever used").

Just because a new game looks nice doesnt mean its good. Did you play Crisis Core? You could beat it (much like XIII) by just hammering x. These aren't even games... they're just DVD's with a manual "move movie forward".

Oh, and after asking me to profess a lexicon on character depth, you refute my opinion with "your taste is bad. lightning was good". Bravo.

Anyhow, I'm getting myself involved in an arguement that I have no vested interest in. I haven't bought a console game in a couple years (I play the roomate's games if i have a desire to play at all).

Someone was telling someone ELSE that THEIR opinion was wrong even though I happened to agree. I could have just come in and shouting NOU at them and left it alone but I wanted to back up my opinion with my reasoning.

I don't really feel that there's any reason to get your panties in a twist about it just because lightning is your waifu and you had her avatar for a year. ***, if you said "Bruce Campbell is a poor actor" I wouldn't feel the need to put half as much of a fight up as you have.

"You sir, are the one who is poor in taste".

I was genuinely asking for someone's opinion. The only complaints I ever hear are "She's too mean!" or "She's too stoic!" both of which are easily explained by basic human reactions to exceedingly stressful situations and typical military standards.

And Fang's my waifu, not Lightning. >:|

So again, without the *** "mean" and "stoic" reasons, why exactly is she a bad character?

Okay, the more I examine the way the battle/equipment systems work, the cooler this game looks. Interesting how they're taking a Zelda-like approach, too.
