14 is now their leading mmo by far(way more subs and at a higher price), 11 is just still in the profit, but if 11 was to tank it would prolly work out for the best seeing that it would increase 14's subs.
imo 14 has all their best devs, while 11 keeps the ones that aren't good enough yet lol.
Hopefully XIV can retain most of it's playerbase because it'll surely take a decade for them to recover from the development costs. As long as they don't do anything stupid, like Abyssea...

XI has kept SE alive, no matter what people think of it. Maybe.
But isn't XIV supposed to be their new cash cow? Not yet, XIV is still not breaking even yet, and won't for a few years.

Yes, leaving the level cap at 50, not adding endgame content and not adding any new stronger gear will certainly help XIV. I meant making the difficulty setting go from what it is now to easymode.
Because I truly believe that is what originally killed FFXI.

From what it is now? Are you implying FFXIV is hard?

Mobile gaming is huge in Japan these days though, but even then, the #s are kinda surprising, but FF beating out a Mario game in terms of sales is something to be happy for.

That Mario game must have been really bad.

As for what broke XI, the level cap increase from 75 to 99 really did them in

From what it is now? Are you implying FFXIV is hard? FFXI was never that hard tbh either. Just took something with more than a pulse to do or get anything done. Sure, before the grand CoP nerf it was difficult to get anything done in the storyline, but it still wasn't impossible to do it either.
But Abyssea made it so you don't even need a pulse to get anything accomplished to get the best crap in the game...

Hard is a relative concept. Cop before the nerf was hard because it required a lot of time mainly cause of a mediocre game design. Could it be done? Sure given time/effort/luck but again the main problem was the design.
I am not sure what do you mean with abyssea. it still took time and effort to get the best things which I assume you mean the emps. An organised group would get them faster the rest at a slower pace.
Hence allow me to make a lil correction. Abyssea more of the playerbase to get involved with the content and ,from my perspective at least, the only people that were bothered were the ones that always were "I have things you don't".
Honestly the only thing that broke FFXI was that they tried to please everyone which doesn't really works, instead of polishing their gameplay.

Well now that 13-3 has bombed in Japan hopefully SE gets the message that we are not interested in shameless cash grabs, give us high quality games or close the doors.

If they aren't capable of releasing content worthy of the Final Fantasy name anymore, I'd rather that they just use different titles for their bs games. Then I guess they wouldn't make as much money on them then, but I'm getting sick of the past 10-11 years being nothing but failures in my opinion, not reaching the level of quality that the franchise deserves. Not to say the stories were bad (some were though), but I think the quality of the game isn't up to where it needs to be.

I dont think they have the financial flexibility right now to do anything other than a big title like FF15 and KH3. They can't take any chances because current gen was just a financial disaster for the company. I would love to see them give us a proper Star Ocean game or another Chrono Cross, they just can't because they have failed so miserably in the last 7 years. They literally have to go big or go home.

I don't really know what is smart or not, but, what if SE made the move to do handheld games only? That way they would be able to focus more on a good story to sell the game over spending millions in developing it to make it look pretty.

They made some handheld games, Dissidia, a FF7 prequel, they got rated really highly, but they were all on the PSP I think, the vita is just a waste of time, SE realized it and moved on.

The FF7 prequel was a decent game but it had a lot of wasted potential. It felt like they wanted to give it a KH-type battle system, then fumbled it, went halfway, and threw in a weird RNG-summoning system.

You mean the shiva twins that can be mounted (as a bike) wasn't a good idea?

I don't get why so many ppl hate on a bunch of FFs. I thought 10-2, 12, 13/13-2 were great. Not to mention FFT and Dissidia.

No, we have high standards. Those games are trash, and SE is suffering for it.

It's not that they're bad games, the stories are fine for the most part. It's just that most people believe that SE is sacrificing quality for visuals, and that hurts the overall game. It doesn't make it a bad game, just not worthy of the Final Fantasy name to others. So they hate on it and pick at every little detail they find wrong because they expect better.

Square Enix Teases More of "Final Fantasy XIII" Lightning Saga
"A storm gathers" with a reveal planned for September 1 at Shibuya event
Joseph Luster
August 22, 2012 11:15am CDT
Square Enix is teasing the next step for the story of Final Fantasy XIII's Lightning, which came to an end with May's Final Fantasy XIII-2 add-on, "Lightning Story: Requiem of the Goddess." Despite the DLC's conclusiveness, a new teaser site promises a reveal of "the new direction for the saga of key character, Lightning."
As the site says, key members of the FFXIII development team—including the Producer, Director, and Art Director—are preparing a presentation that's set to take place at a Final Fantasy 25th anniversary Gallery event in Shibuya, which will be held from August 31 through September 2.
The FFXIII presentation itself is going down on September 1, so we'll have to wait until then to find out what Square Enix has in store. Are you ready for more of the Lightning Saga?

The latest issue of the Japanese edition of Shonen Jump has treated its readers to a shot of the new look for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII's titular character.
A trailer is promised for the 2013 edition of the magazine's annual Jump Festa event.
