Quote: "If you feel that new Lightning is slightly less masculine, or she's a little bit more girly, it's because of two reasons: I think in Lightning Returns, we want to depict her in different lights, not just as one single character behaving the same way all the way through [the Final Fantasy 13 games]. We get to see her and experience different sides and elements of her, maybe one of them being fairly feminine and girly."
"The other reason I can't get very much into without spoiling the story, but in Lightning Returns' story, Lightning has lost a lot of valuable things in her life. That sense of loss might come across here as a kind of vulnerable part of her character. Maybe that's why you could think she seems a bit more feminine."
tldr: excuses for turning it into Fashion Fantasy XIII.

I thought SE's excuse was having more than 16 colors to work with.

Honestly, the "dress-up" aspect of the game really made it more appealing for me. I loved the dresspheres in X-2 and I'm getting the same vibe from this game.
Yeah it's gratuitous, doesn't really fit the character, and it's a cheap ploy, but I'm kind of a sucker for that, I guess.

Whats wrong with the way she looks? looks the same/fine to me.
By ScaevolaBahamut 2013-08-23 16:03:40
She was terrible because there was no explanation for why she was such an ***. Her last words to her sister were essentially "If you are a le cie I will hunt you down and kill you". She feels guilt because she drove Serah away rather than protecting her as she felt she should have and pushes others away. This is also why she takes to watching over Hope when he chances after her, she sees in him a chance at redemption of sorts.
There was a book released in Japan taking place before the game starts, reading it gives a ton more insight into the characters and shows several events that were not shown in the game.
so you're saying that the people responsible for ff13 are such terrible storytellers they needed to write (license) entirely different material to adequately explain the motivations of the characters they'd written several dozen hours of dialogue for

I would actually prefer that they release books about their games, it would give them reason to focus on their story and make it good, plus it would be fun to read them as well.
I'm not saying that you would have to play both the game an read the book to get the full story, that is completely the opposite of what I'm saying. That just shows bad planning and design.

k More that they expanded on the universe using a different medium that portray the characters in ways that just dialogue and actions can not. Really not an uncommon thing these days.

Hey, if that's what people actually like, then it's their right to buy it. It's easy to criticize the "dress up" aspect of something like X-2 until upon a quite moment of reflection, you realize you just spent 30minutes seeing what gear goes well with what helmet in Skyrim.

Technically a logical fallacy (Begging the question) since you're basing your conclusion on the claim that a sharply dressed male is less likely to get laid.

Now that's a checkmate, although I'd ask what's the point of even playing the game if neither looks nor combat effectiveness is a driving force.

Exploration and story/lore, maybe? I've never done the Pacifist Playthrough myself

Fashion is of no concern to me in a video game that offers no measurable benefit outside aesthetics

Pacifism and exploration don't go together naturally though. The very idea of exploring is founded in conflict, against man, nature and the elements.
And the Story and Lore are all founded in violence, it is Skyrim after all.
I know we're getting into derail territory now, but only in Morrowind was it truly possible to have a pacifist character, as many of the narratives (Namely Hlaalu, Thieves Guild, Mage's Guild) could be resolved without battle.

See, now I got nothin' else I can say as a direct response. That said 'fashion' really depends on the game, in Skyrim, the only real difference (Thanks to the hilariously broken smithing mechanics) between armor is how they look.

Well there is a pacifist thing in Skyrim, I'm not sure how much killing you're actually forced to do though

Evertime I see new news on this game all that comes to mind is that the title should be Final Fantasy XIII Lightning's Wardrobe.

YouTube Video Placeholder If the wardrobes were pertinent to the job/roles she would need in battle, it would be called for. That was just excessive for no real reason.

XIII... was alright. Other than the fact that there was no real "free roam" until you were near the end of the game, and the fact that you were forced to constantly change party members until you reached Pulse, it was a fairly enjoyable experience for me. (I understand that this was for the sake of telling the same story from multiple perspectives, but the changes happened so frequently that after the first few chapters it really started to piss me off.) Minus the half hour I spent redoing the Odin fight over and over again because his f*cking AoE kept hitting Lightning and Hope and sending them airborne... XIII-2 I own, but have not played. I've watched my brother play it for several hours and the whole notion of "travel through time to fix everything" just didn't sit well with me, though that's probably just the lingering effects of their time travel usage with the WotG storyline.
Overall I can't say I have high hopes for Lightning Returns, but we'll see. Once the price drops I'll probably pick it up for the simple fact that I haven't turned down a Final Fantasy game to date.

That battle system is redesigned, and the story telling vehicle is different from the other two games. If you focus on the outfit system then the game seems kinda silly but I haven't heard anything bad about the gameplay/story yet.
Square Enix Teases More of "Final Fantasy XIII" Lightning Saga
"A storm gathers" with a reveal planned for September 1 at Shibuya event
Joseph Luster
August 22, 2012 11:15am CDT
Square Enix is teasing the next step for the story of Final Fantasy XIII's Lightning, which came to an end with May's Final Fantasy XIII-2 add-on, "Lightning Story: Requiem of the Goddess." Despite the DLC's conclusiveness, a new teaser site promises a reveal of "the new direction for the saga of key character, Lightning."
As the site says, key members of the FFXIII development team—including the Producer, Director, and Art Director—are preparing a presentation that's set to take place at a Final Fantasy 25th anniversary Gallery event in Shibuya, which will be held from August 31 through September 2.
The FFXIII presentation itself is going down on September 1, so we'll have to wait until then to find out what Square Enix has in store. Are you ready for more of the Lightning Saga?

The latest issue of the Japanese edition of Shonen Jump has treated its readers to a shot of the new look for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII's titular character.
A trailer is promised for the 2013 edition of the magazine's annual Jump Festa event.
