Yes, but not reliably.
When you fish matsya, you get mostly items/jellyfish/monsters. Notable part there is you get items.
Unless you wanna waste all your precious precious dwarf pugils, you need to reel in items. Now you've got two options, do you trust your sleepy ff character, who doesnt have your guidance, to only throw away rusty buckets, and not accidentally toss the next thing in line, say your shiny new relic? If you do, then hey sleep away. If not, you have to manually toss out the rusty ***as your inventory fills up.

Ironically, this is probably just going to spur on more complaining. It's a lose-lose situation: If the shawl is good, people complain about having to get it; if it's bad, people complain that it's a waste of time.
Also, I was kind of surprised that in all of the discussion about how it "doesn't make sense" for the shawl to come from fishing, there was no Hocho analogy.

It makes sense to me for the cape to come from fishing.
For the most part a player is going to have capped or be very near capped fishing when they get this. Assuming they did not buy the fish.
It would make sense that SE's intent is to have dedicated fishers branch off and explore the other crafting elements the game has to offer.
One of the biggest current complaints about taking a craft from 0-100/110 is the cost involved, or how slow it can be.
What a better way to convince the master fishers out there to try a craft other than to make the tedious and costly leveling system a bit easier.
And what a glorious carrot for the players, like myself, who have capped crafting but never touched fishing.
I am finding fishing to be quite fun, a little sad I never tried it in the past 9 years. I am also looking to reduce the 100mil cost to go from Alchemy 102 to 110.

Hocho analogy? You can level ninja (or any job) REALLY REALLY quickly these days (and you could have leveled easily back in the day too. let's not kid ourselves). And there are chefs in Japan who use abnormally large cooking knives for show. Hence the hocho. There is actual story/lure to the Hocho... so um, what?

Yeah but it could have been all jobs, like the trainee weapons or guild things.

trainee weapons suck, since they are like lvl 40 and under or w/e for the latent, and the guild thingies are only +1 skill. +3 skill is kind of large, no? hence the stipulation. and again, there is kinda sorta some story behind it, given Japanese sushi chefs and such irl.

Somehow, I don't think people are complaining about the shawl coming from a fish because it doesn't have a good story behind it.
(What I meant by it "not making sense" is more concerning time/effort/requirements/etc. people were bringing up)

Hocho is simply an NM drop. You could theoretically get it in 5m of work. That damn sure isn't the mass amount of requirement to take up fishing to get the shawl (getting to 28 THEN buying a ton of fish in hopes of getting lucky, or getting to 100+ + ebisu (which is a lot more))

It's a massive amount of time and effort no matter how you look at it because of the extremely low rate of actually finding the Shawl.
That's what I have a problem with.

If your trained monkey cant tell the difference between a Mandau and a Rusty Bucket, you need a new trainer.
Do you mean matsya and a rusty bucket? Not sure where Mandau comes in here.

I have a hard time understanding the whole argument of "It takes time to get rewards" mindset. If everything was handed to you you would say it was too easy.
And from a business standpoint if you have no goals you are not going to pay a monthly subscription.
I personally love the challenge of this item. I think the difficulty compared to the power of the cape is spot on.

For the people who don't understand why rusty buckets are fished up while fishing matsya:
When using consumable bait (little worm/crafish paste/dwarf pugil/etc) every time you release the "fish" on the other side of the line you lose the bait. If you reel in an item, the bait is not lost, though it is still lost when you catch a fish or monster.
the monsters have a set # of IDs and cannot be fished up while say they are on repop timers or a pet is tanking them.
Therefore, it is best to fish up all the monsters, have a friend there permanently tank them all while you use your Matsya bait to fish rusty items and try to catch some matsya.

i might be inclined to agree if it was difficult, rather than simply time consuming and 99% luck.

| | Good morning fishers,
The Shaper’s Shawl was set to be a difficult to obtain reward on par with the rewards that could be obtained by defeating a powerful notorious monster and we do not have any plans of easing the difficulty. For that reason, there are no plans to obtain this item through any content other than "Inside the Belly". | |
