maybe it's one of those things if u have to ask, you can't afford it. there's plenty of people who can.

waiting testing to support my theory that it will supply possible double skillups like pelican rings do for fishing. .3 +.3 off one fish is noticeable.

No, it's one of those things you should ask:

"Can I afford it?"

"Yes."

"Should I afford it?"

"Not unless I'm a dumbfuck."

"Good boy."

The extraordinary amount of time and money required to get the thing could be pumped directly into skillups instead.

At this point in the game's life, most players that haven't already leveled some crafts are not going to. The majority of people that would put this item to use would be those that are leveling sub-crafts or doing the ~100-110 spree. That being said, I think this item is a bit too costly for an item that has a limited usage life, since it can't be sent to mules for prolonged usage.

this assumes there will be no new crafting ranks in the future? did they say they wouldn't? i assumed they would when i saw 110... why not 120? if they are running out of busy work to give you to justify the monthly fees, they will make more.

I wish it was a 2nd d.ring from the fish instead. I absolutely agree that it doesn't have a very large market of players that'd want another skillup item that can cost as much as getting the craft 1-110. Could have also done an "increases the chance to HQ," would be better than skillups.

Making Fishing the only way to get it is a bit of an outreach to alot of players.
I believe that was their intention. I think they just wanted to give something to players who wanted to go out and cut open Matsya's without introducing something to the market that people could sell and flood the market with.

Matsya is the most time consuming, and possibly even the most difficult fish to catch (and I say possibly only because it's been years since I've tried fishing Mastya), yet it had no purpose other than a trophy. I think SE decided to give something to players who wished for this fish to be added to the Inside the Belly quest, and gave them a reward that would give it a slight purpose other than being a trophy.

The improvement this cape provides is (most likely) not worth the 20-30+ mil people are wasting on it. I would take a guess that it is a 10% improvement in skillups, or lower. It is a trophy within a trophy really, something fishermen could be proud of that wanted Matsya to have a purpose.

The problem with this is players see something they want, and they must have it. There is a workaround with not having an ebisu, or the fishing skill to even start on ebisu, and that is paying someone else to fish the fish for them. So now people want the fish, even if they don't fish, so they can have this cape that probably won't be noticeable at all.

---

I'm probably wrong, in multiple ways, but that's how I see it. Matsya was a trophy fish for years, and now it has a trophy inside of it.

43 so i thought i'd try the monthly fishing tourney for a skill up ring
but all the fish on those are lvl 100 fish wtf i need skill ups now.

i wouldnt be spending any money on these until someone says exactly what the cape does lol but it appears theres people with gil to burn!

^ This

Let's first assume that crafts will cap at 110 indefinitely...
Depending on the craft though, it can cost anywhere from 30-40M per level once you get to the 104+ skill levels, (again, depends on the craft, 105+ for Leather, might be 102+ for goldsmithing, I'm not sure). If you don't get lucky with some T0 (or even T1) HQs on some of the new hexed gear that's a LOT of gil to cap at 110.

So if you spend 30M on the cape and it gives you a +1% or +5% skill chance of skill up then, yes it's probably not worth the cost. If it gives +10%, then it might break even, depending on at what level the cost per synth shoots up. If it gives something more than +10% then it probably is definitely worth it, (though I admit, I HIGHLY doubt the shawl is this beneficial).

Another thing to consider, at least on Carbuncle, perhaps it's different on other servers, but the demand of the Expert Level synthesis materials exceeds the supply (esp for the PW and XXX Chamber items).

Lakshmi.Byrth said: »
Time and money are interchangeable. If it's not worth getting for someone buying the fish, it's not worth getting for the fisherman.

If it takes you a week to gather enough materials to do 12 synths due to low demand then this cape becomes even more valuable. With a low supply of synthesis materials, the ability to "more quickly," (read as "in fewer total synths"), cap your skill increases the shawl's value.

This is also to say nothing of the future possibility of more increases in the level caps of crafting.

Just some things to think about.

Worth the challenge. Don't know why people are bitching. Can just skill up the normal way for the past 9 years. Either way you're throwing gil for crafting or getting the fish.

Don't know about you but goldsmithing 100-110 is a *** to level and not really worth it at the moment. Either way, my gil is being thrown somewhere.

Going to say we have no clue the percent yet. If set at 5% some craftsman have claimed the cost is in the 10mil+ range for 100-110.

well worth it for someone just starting a craft, or if said person thinks the rank of 110 will raise. Things will only get worse for the cost and as such the price of this cape will go up as well.

Its hit or miss, not worth the fishers time unless around the 1mil price range but close to what a craftsman thinks is overpriced.

We won't know the true worth of the cape until we know the full detail of it's effect but one thing I'd like to point out that many seem to be missing. An increase in skill up rate not only affect the money spent on skilling up but also the time spent doing it. The faster you reach the cap the earlier you can actually focus on solely making money with it, such as monopolizing the HQ gears before anyone else can, like the hexed gears.
Also, as Kembot pointed out, the market isn't exactly overflowing with the materials for some of the higher skill synths. The cape will allow for maximal use of the very limited supply (as it currently stands). Whether or not you want to invest in this cape is up to you but one thing that I do know for certain is that people who have it will skill up faster than those that do not; unless getting the cape cripples their bank account enough to prevent them from doing any actual skill ups.

I think this is a great item for those who have put the hard yards into levelling Fishing. I can understand why some people would be disappointed about the price. But it's just another item that the people who want it, will either level fishing to get it, or pay someone else to do it for them. I'm sure the price will come down on these, probably to 100-250k range once the market starts to stock up a bit. But at the moment people can afford to price gouge on them as the demand is much higher than that supply. And lets face it, there are plenty of people with gil to burn these days.

The only question people need to ask is, is this worth the time/gil to pursue vs how much advantage will I get out of this. Many people will probably just not bother with it. But I'm sure there is quite a few out there that will either spend the time, or gil to get this. I'm looking forward to the challenge I think this will breathe a bit more life into Fishing. Perhaps more people will look at fishing as more than just a way to make money, but to save money in levelling synthing.

Won't happen. If prices even dip remotely low people won't fish them since it's a massive waste of time.

Wouldn't be nearly as much of an issue if the drop rate were 33% or more. 1~5% is just simply woefully insufficient for the fish that they stuck the cape inside of, as it is essential for the prices of those fish to be set so high due to what you're trading off by fishing them instead of more steadily profitable fish.

People that don't fish do not understand how hard these fish are to get. They are the hardest fish in the game to fish up.

You need an Ebisu.
You need an EX bait that comes from gutting another fish.
They are a rare bite.
Jellyfish share and will steal your bait.
They will most likely break your line.
They deplete your stamina in a matter for seconds.

On average, you'll get 1 out of 12 bait if you're lucky. It takes an entire day of fishing (maybe more) to even get ready for these. The price will never come down, and if it does, people won't fish them. It's already not worth it to fish them for 600k IMO.

The only ones I see complaining are the ones who don't fish/non-ebisu owners. I don't see the problem here, level fishing or pay whatever price ebisu owners feel is worth their time. End of story.

Let me first just say... OMG! After like 100 different thread topics, the Dev's actually responded to one of mine! (now if they would just take the helping tarus thread to heart)

Siren.Kalilla said: »
I don't even know what to say. Fishers have waited years for Matsya to be implemented in the "Inside the Belly" quest, and when it finally does players, most who haven't even picked up a fishing rod, feel the need to complain. Matsya finally got a reward worth doing in my opinion, and I see nothing wrong with it being for leveling other crafts faster.

Well i sure do.

I'm not complaining that fishers have something, just that this equipment is only obtainable by fishing. Fishing is not a traditional craft. And the traditional crafting skill+ item should be obtained by traditional crafts or guilds. Fishing is as much of a traditional craft as synergy is. Both may have their uses, and their money making potential, but their not traditional crafts. Hence the reason fishing and synergy skill caps are not related to traditional crafts caps.

As for ppl saying 'just go fish yourself or buy them.' That doesn't quite work. Their are a lot of crafters, including myself, that really hate fishing. So to that group, this item is just insulting. But to those that have no problem with it, leveling fishing from 1-100 or 110 and getting a Lu shang/ebshu just to get a crafting item is ludicrous. The time it would take to do that i could cap all traditional craft on all my mules faster then that.
Along the same line, buying them is just as insane. Prices on my server are starting at 1 mill per fish. Seriously? Were supposed to spend 5-10-20-50-100 mill to get a crafting item have a chance at getting a crafting item. I can tell you for sure, that iv capped all my crafts for cheaper then that.

Really, the only ppl this item is helping are those that already have high level fishing and ebshu. Not because they need the crafting item, but because they can sell the fish to the 'perfectionists' at such insanely high prices. (and wouldn't want to forget the gill buyers')

Id be willing to bet that noone saw this item and suddenly thought to themselves 'oh wow, i have to level all my crafts now!' For the most part the ppl that would be most interested in this item are those that already have most if not all their crafts leveled. That being said, if you already have most of it done, your not going to want to spend an eternity of time or money on an item that will provide minimal use.
