I've been wondering this for ages to myself. But never been sure.

You know, it's that dungeon in the North under the ice. You go through for CoP missions.

Who knows?

Pso'Xja = ソジヤ = so-jiya

edit -- google translate says "Sojiya" too. We all know languages don't directly convert from one to another (for the most part) but I'd be willing to go with Japanese pronunciation considering it's a Japanese made game :)

I always say it with a silent P and silent X

But X is a Sh sound in Mandarin so Sha sort of makes sense too.

Could even be Peh-So Sha-ja

Despite the known japanese way of twisting pronounciation looking at the katakana I don't see much room for doubts, "So Jiya" seems the correct answer.

I'm sure the Japanese and English versions have different pronunciations but should give a good idea. The emphasis on parts of the word going to be off probably too.

Here's another for you!
Castle Oztroja in Japanese: オズトロヤ (oh zuh two row yah) or something like that. Seems like SE dropped part word in the NA version maybe? Ozturoja would be closer. For all we know they misspelled/mistranslated it like everything else in the NA version ...

Sorry if I'm off a bit, my Japanese skills come from living in Okinawa a few years (military) plus anime, manga, and a little Rosetta Stone. About all I can do is order food or find my way around an airport these days >.>

simply speaking, a chinese sound is comprised of an initial paired with a final. in pinyin x and j are both initials, making it impossible for the x to be pronounced in accordance with chinese phonology.

japanese mora(basically a syllable) have a (c)v structure, that is to say, they are either a vowel, or a consonant+vowel, that's why when convertred into japanese, oztroja, the z and t having no vowel counterpart, are given one as seen in the transliteration, ozutoroja

Many names are also conceived with a western pronounciation in mind, it is then a shortcoming in japanese writing that they change slightly. Like Ozutoroja in this case.

Which is why I believe So Jiya is correct, since you can right in japanese ja, sha, jisha, chisha or jija, or whatever.

SO JYAH

I say it like this too, as opposed to the way the katakana version ("so-ji-ya") would appear to make the "ji" part more pronounced.

Though, if it was actually "so-jya" then the katakana would be ソジャ instead of what it is: ソジヤ (note the difference in size of the "ya" character).

So whilst I would say it "so-jya", it's officially appearing to be "so-ji-ya" like Sehachan (and others) have said.

I've definitely heard some very crazy pronunciations of FFXI words and names though, more than the other variations already presented.

Thanks for that. Fortunately I was just saying that X is pronounced with a Sh in Chinese and extrapolating, not saying the word was Chinese.

Maybe someone can enlighten us about a language that pronounces the P's at the start of words outside the Discworld.

I'm glad I didn't mention chinese phonology, though, or I might have looked like a ***.
