I agree with this wholeheartedly, and have no qualms with purchasing an xbox or just playing on my pc due to this. In fact, i started looking at xbox as soon as I read there was no PS2 version in the new rom file. My issue more lies with the people who have listened to other peoples years of rumors and ill informed information, that the game will be better without ps2, when in fact, they are horribly mistaken. In my eyes, they fall in the same boat as the people who post replies to other people, saying they shouldn't come back to the game, its broken, it sucks, yet they play every day, and continue to pay SE their monthly subscription, while they are bitching on the forums about how horrible this game is.

Could they just be talking about the boxed copies sent to retail?
I redeemed my code for the Ultimate Edition for Xbox 360, but I could also play the content on PC and PS2. I suspect that PS2 users will be able to play it, provided they purchase it for a different platform (or online)...

SS is playing from a hotel where I couldn't hardline my ps2
So did windower make that experience terrible? I just want to understand you if you are so against it then why did you use it?
As far as playing on my pc, windower doesn't make it horrible, as i can also browse le interwebs, but I don't use any plugins that I'm aware, generic ***that comes with it, like how long til pro/shell wears, and distance. But after playing for 8 yrs on ps2, I don't need draw distance, and I also have a good idea of how long is left on my buffs without a timer. So, in a nutshell, I don't even notice these things, might as well be playing non-windowed.

Even for the JP PS2 version, they pretty much have to offer a digital installation since many of those PS2s have lost their optical disc reading ability.

There will be content on the disc that needs to be downloaded to your HDD, such as the maps. Whether you have access or not on another platform, you won't be able to access the areas on your ps2.

Keeping a game held back due to a very small amount of the population is not a good business decision. I understand the ps2 is absolutely nuts in Japan. But clearly they could not feasibly do a new expansion and allow for ps2 support in North America. After hearing about ps2 limitations doing everything from not allowing more space on characters to not allowing any extra auto translates, the fact that SE has taken steps forward, at least for a part of the population, will have positive results.

That "when it is released in 2013" part almost sounds like they aren't closing the door on a ps2 release entirely, to me anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if they got around to it later on. Even if pressing discs for the NA region is not possible, couldn't they sell it on their website loaded on a thumb drive or something? They are cheap enough I'd imagine, and if I recall correctly the ps2 did have USB ports. Just a thought...

They didn't just start taking steps, SE has made efforts in updating the UI for PC and 360 users, as well as replicating popular windower plugins as commands in the game. I would say the effort started about 1 1/2 - 2 years ago.

Again, where do you get your facts? This game is coded based on ps2, they are not going to recode the entire game, this is no positive mood to please a larger # of the player base. It's merely a problem downloading so much content onto the HDD, and not worth their time, apparently, when such a small portion of the NA playerbase is PS2.

Windower was hardly ever the plague in FFXI.
I have never once said, in a single post, that windower was a plague to the game. I must admit, i've never read about SE doing this, and apologize for being misinformed on that matter. But I don't believe SE will instate the applications that do the most for current windower users, such as the macros.

Lots of conflicting statements. Sounds like the big thing ps2 holds back is auto translate. It's just suspect to me that it took so long for a complete new expansion with new zones took so long, and once they do, they decide to drop the expansion for NA ps2.
Why is SE not letting ps2 players download the new expansion? Is it because they're lazy? Or could there possibly be a legitimate reason?

@ Cicada, lol, surprisingly enough there weren't that many "ermahgawd ps2 sux" comments, but rather a lot of "Prove to me that windower is cheating".
Also, I doubt they'll lose that many players, I'd say the majority of said PS2 owners, also have a PC at home that is capable of running the game, and since you can DL an Ultimate collection for as little as $5.00, I would assume that they would simply switch over to PC. Lets face it, this game is crack... you don't just quit.

But, they haven't done anything to get rid of the PS2. As Prothescar said it's likely a marketing/manufacturing issue. Plus I doubt any store in NA wants to sell a new PS2 game on their shelves. I imagine after 10 years of the game's existence that this will definitely be the last expansion. So after this one I'm sure there will be room left on the PS2 HDDs (for JP users) for updates, etc.

We will continue to support North American FINAL FANTASY XI players on the PlayStation 2, Xbox 360 and PC (Windows) platforms. However, FINAL FANTASY XI: Seekers of Adoulin will only be available on the Xbox 360 and Windows platforms in North America when it is released in 2013. | |
